FIELDS OF CLINICAL EXPERTISE
CONGENITAL HEART
NYP’s program is recognized as a top 5 high-volume center by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons. Its heart surgeons
performed 2,907 pediatric and adult congenital heart surgeries and its interventional cardiologists performed 5,246 pediatric and adult catheter procedures from 2016 to 2019. With leading programs in pediatric cardiology, cardiac surgery, and pediatric transplant, NYP has extensive experience with complex cases and has operative survival rates above national benchmarks.
NYP has been at the forefront of developing novel techniques to perform hybrid surgical-interventional procedures for
complex congenital heart defects including hypoplastic left heart syndrome. Its specialists excel in minimally invasive techniques to replace diseased heart valves, close cardiac defects, and implant stents.
HEART
NYP’s cardiologists, interventional cardiologists, and cardiac and vascular surgeons continue to advance treatment for heart disease through programs that are among the largest and most comprehensive in the country. Its physicians and surgeons are leaders and innovators in the field, working collaboratively to develop and refine minimally invasive techniques that ease recovery for patients while achieving greater survival with fewer complications. These include the ever-growing application of transcatheter interventions; the use of robotics in cardiac surgery; and new drug and device- based treatments for arrhythmias.
CANCER
Innovations in medicine and science are accelerating the discovery and development of novel diagnostic and therapeutic advances in cancer that are enabling NYP to achieve the best possible outcomes for patients. Central to its endeavors are two major cancer centers: the National Cancer Institute-designated Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center at Columbia and the Sandra and Edward Meyer Cancer Center at Weill Cornell Medicine. Here, NYP’s cancer specialists collaborate on strategies for early detection
and optimal diagnosis, develop groundbreaking therapies, and apply the latest technology and techniques to translate discoveries from the lab directly into the clinic.
NEURO
The Neurology and Neurosurgery program continues to lead in the diagnosis and treatment of neurological diseases and disorders, with nationally and internationally recognized faculty practicing at the forefront of their specialties. NYP’s specialists continue to make clinical advances and research discoveries in glioblastoma. At the science level, NYP researchers continue their investigations to better understand the role of genetics in Alzheimer’s disease. They continue to explore new applications for high-intensity focused ultrasound for an expanding range of conditions, as well as the latest treatments for complex
epilepsy cases. NYP’s world-renowned neurosurgical spine and orthopedic surgeons at the Och Spine Hospital provide adults and children with personalized care, including non-surgical and surgical approaches to treat simple to the most complex cases.
TRANSPLANTATION
NYP is an international leader in the transplantation of organs including the heart, lung, liver, kidney, intestine, and pancreas.
We have the most experienced program in the country, having performed the most transplants in the U.S. With programs that have existed for decades, we are ranked as one of the top organ transplant programs in the country for having better than expected outcomes. Our pediatric organ transplant
