FATHER JERRY’S HOMILY

Go into Nashville. Take any exit and come up to a red light. There you will find someone begging for money. I have helped some of them in the past, but most of the time, I just sit with my window rolled up. I go through all of the excuses in my head. “Why don’t they get a job like everyone else?” “They’ll probably use the money for drugs or alcohol.” How does this scenario make you feel? It makes me feel uncomfortable. Add on my Roman collar and it gets worse.

The Gospel for today is meant to do the same thing; make us feel uncomfortable. It is an irritant, but an irritant designed to lead us toward doing the right thing; like the irritant that enters an oyster. That irritant forces the oyster to produce a pearl.

The rich man is described as wearing purple and feasting on fine foods. For us, that’s like saying he wears expensive Armani suits and eats only at the finest restaurants. He is wealthy. He has everything he needs... he also has everything he wants. The rich man is not given a name. Sometimes the story is referred to as the story of Lazarus and Dives, but Dives is just Latin for” Rich Man.” A name would indicate a point of connection to others but as wealth often does, the rich man is closed in on himself. He is unaware of the suffering around him. He has closed himself from God; off from others and only interested in his own desires.

While the Rich Man is clothed in purple; Lazarus is clothed in sores. And Lazarus is not some beggar at a stop sign, Lazarus is po- sitioned on the front steps of the Rich Man’s house. Whenever the Rich Man leaves or comes into his house, he literally has to step over Lazarus.

Lazarus dies and is accepted into that great open space we call Heaven, the open arms of Abraham. The Rich Man ends up in what we call Hell. The Rich Man cries out for help, but it’s too late. “Abraham, send Lazarus to warn my brothers.” “Lord, if only they would know!”

They have Moses and the prophets. They have the ability to know what they should do. They won’t listen. Even if they see Lazarus back from the dead, they wouldn’t listen to him.

We too, have the same knowledge of Moses and the prophets with the added statement by Jesus, who has indeed come back from the dead. Love one another as I have loved you. No exceptions; love one another… a drink to the thirsty, clothes to the naked, and food for the hungry.

The first reading today is from one of those prophets; Amos. “Woe to the complacent in Zion! Lying upon beds of ivory, stretched comfortably on their couches, they eat lambs taken from the flock, and calves from the stall!” Amos, who rails against the indiffer- ence to the needs of the poor. Woe to us who have more than we need while some have nothing. Jeremiah, Isaiah, and all the great prophets call us to be attentive to the poor. They remind us of the danger of isolating ourselves in our wealth.

The Social Teachings of the Church are rooted in the traditions of the Rich Man and Lazarus and the prophets’ cry for the poor. God is the Creator of all things, and as such, He owns all things. We are entrusted to the things we have …entrusted to care for and use wisely the things we have. Everything we have is given to us to use but they ultimately belong to God. We don’t control; God does.

We are merely caretakers of what we have. Stewards of creation. But the purpose is to use what we have in cooperation with God’s plan. Whatever we have been given, is finally given back when we are through with them only to hope that we hear, “Well done good and faithful servant!” Thomas Aquinas states that we have a right to the ownership of our private property, but in re- gards to our use of our private property, the Common Good must always be paramount.

So, how do we use our gifts, our blessings, our wealth, how should we handle what we have beyond what we need. Our gifts from God are a blessing to provide for ourselves, but we cannot isolate ourselves and be unaware of those who are Lazarus in our lives.

Now money isn’t bad and no one is evil because they have money. The poor do not achieve Heaven simply because they are poor.

Nor do the rich see condemnation simply because they are wealthy.

Why has God permitted me to have this my gifts, my wealth? There it is. That’s the question to ask. How do I use the gifts that God has given me?

But there are so many Lazarus figures we meet in our lives? If we know that individual, it can be a personal encounter, but again, there are so many. The seminary taught me to never give money to someone I don’t know, but rather give to the agencies that care for the poor and there are several: Catholic Charities, Nashville Mission, Room at the Inn.

Lord, if only I had known….... We all the capacity to know.

Daniel Garcia Margaret Mathews Please contact nativitycatholicprayerchain@gmail.com Did You Know?

What does it mean when the prayer says, “And lead us not into tempta- tion”? As I understand it, Jesus doesn’t lead us to temptation. He doesn’t want us to be tempted. What does the prayer then mean?

Good question! Pope Francis has recently spoke about this same pray- er, saying that we are asking (begging) God to NOT let us fall in tempta- tion. As you know the world surrounds us with all types of physical and mental temptations; gluttony, gossip, sloth, just to name three. We also know that we have the gift of “free will” and do from time to time chose these things that are less than God, who is love. God wants us to be the ‘best version of ourselves,’ and as such from time to time we are tested like gold and silver so that our true character shines through (see Ps. 66:10-12, Prov.17:3-13). As St. Peter says in his first epistle, “so that the proof of your faith, being more precious than gold which is perishable, even though tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.”

The trials of life come and go though out our life and when we some- times fall short of the mark, God in His loving kindness has given us the sacrament of Confession.

My Patron Saint: This week we celebrate our newest saint; John Henry Newman. Born in the City of London, 21 February, 1801, the eldest of six children, three boys and three girls; died at Edgbaston, Birming- ham, 11 August, 1890. He was brought up from a child to take great de- light in reading the Bible; but he had no formed religious convictions until he was fifteen. At fifteen he underwent “conversion ‘, though not quite as Evangelicals practice it; from works of the school of Calvin he gained definite dogmatic ideas; and as he rested "in the thought of two and two only absolute and luminously self-evident beings, myself and my Creator." In other words, personality became the primal truth in his philosophy; not matter, law, reason, or the experience of the senses. Henceforth, Newman was a Christian mystic, and such he re- mained.

On 13 June 1824, Newman was made an Anglican deacon in Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford. On Trinity Sunday, 29 May 1825, he was or- dained a priest in Christ Church Cathedral by the Bishop of Oxford, and was made curate of St. Clement Church, Oxford. In 1828 he became an active, writing member of what has come to be known as the “Oxford Movement”, where scripture, tradition, theology, and leadership were discussed. It was these discussions that not only formed his concience, his character, but moved him to leave the church of England and be- come a Catholic. He lost many friends when he did this and even more, when two years later, he was ordained a Catholic priest and assigned to St. Anne’s in Birmingham.

Because England was at the time, very anti-Catholic, Fr. Newman trained the laymen of the Catholic Churches in England in Apologetics. This rein- forced their faith and increased their understanding of Sacred Scripture, Tradition, and the Magisterium. Newman believed, that the laymen need- ed to build his personal understanding of all three so as to deepen his relationship with his Creator.

Newman insisted on the lifelong consistency of his opposition to

“liberalism in religion” he argued it would lead to complete relativism.

This philosophy of life in part led to Pope Leo XII consecrating Newman as a Cardinal in May 1879.

Stewardship Corner: Holy Mother Church asks us as Children of God, to invest a portion of each day reading Sacred Scripture. It is part of our stewardship of TIME, talent, and treasure to do so. But some of us don’t know how to read the bible or where to begin read- ing the books of the Bible. Might we suggest the Psalms, which are the middle book in the Bible, or the gospel of Mark which is the second of the four Gospels. Where ever you start, please pray, ask the Holy Spirit to guide your reading, studying, meditation of the words on the pages of the love letters.

One way to change our way of reading the Bible is to say a short prayer.

An ancient prayer that is commonly attributed to St. John Chyrsos- tom is perfect for this, and can be prayed each time you open up the Bible. While it doesn’t guarantee divine inspiration, it can help pre- pare the ground so that your soul is ready to receive exactly what God wants to communicate to you.

O Lord Jesus Christ, open the eyes of my heart that I may hear your Word, and understand and do your will, for I am a sojourner upon the Earth.

Hide not your commandments from me, but open my eyes, that I may perceive the wonders of your Law.

Speak unto me the hidden and secret things of your wisdom.

On you do I set my hope, O my God, that you shall enlighten my mind and understanding with the light of your knowledge; not only to cher- ish those things which are written, but to do them; For you are the enlightenment of those who lie in darkness, and from you comes eve- ry good deed and every gift. Amen.

Angel of God

Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom God’s love commits me here, ever this day (or night) be at my side, to light, to guard, to rule and guide. Amen.

May God, ever put His angels around each of us.

“Love Our Lady and make her loved; always recite the Rosary and recite it as often as possible”

St. Padre Pio

Abby Johnson, a former PP director, says that three-quarters of abortion-minded women will not show up if there is a presence on the sidewalk. We may very well save a life on October 5! NAMI-TN (National Alliance on Mental Illness) is coming to COTN.

The next meeting will be held downstairs in Room 104 on Thursday, November 7th, at 7pm.

What is NAMI? It is the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental health. NAMI offers support and education programs for families and individuals living with mental health conditions.

There will be two separate support groups under the umbrella of NAMI TN:

~ With Hope in Mind (WHM) Groups are for family members and friends of persons with or suspected of having mental illness. They are facilitated by specially-trained family members who understand because the are care providers, too.

~ Bridges (Building Recovery of Individual Dreams and Goals through Education and Support) Groups provide support for persons with mental illness. They are facilitated by people with mental illness, who are living in recovery.

Please join us and learn more about NAMI. Contact Chris Allen with any questions. (615)545-5222 Joela6775@gamil.com

The Pregnancy Centers of Middle Tn will be hosting its Annual Fall Banquet / Fund Raiser on Thursday, October 17, 2019 between 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM at Puckett’s Grocery and Restaurant located at 15 Public Square, Columbia, Tn. The dress is “boots and lace” aka casual.

The meal and entertainment is free, but there will be “donation ask” at the end of the evening. This Christian based agency that assists women in Williamson and Maury Counties, TN deal with “crisis”

pregnancies in a manner that does not include abortion as an alternative.

The agency does not receive any government funding, but does rely on donations to fund its operations. This is the agency that the KC’s are supporting in its “Life" program. It is also the agency that COTN have a collection box for in the northrax. It would be absolutely great if we as Catholic Christians made a strong showing at the Annual Fall Banquet to show our moral conviction against abortion and our support of these people who provide this very important service to women faced with having to make a decision about the future of the innocent children they are carrying within themselves. Tickets are available for distribution. All you have to do after receiving your ticket is to make a RSVP call to the agency so that PCMT can tell Puckets' how much food to prepare. Anyone wanting more information about the event, the agency or desires to make a contribution to this 501(c) organization can reach out to Daniel Dore' via cell at 225-281-4044, email at dmdore@bellsouth.net , text, or instant messenger or you can call the agency at 931-381-4024 in
