DESIGN CRITERIA

It is essential when choosing a fire-rated system that it will be fit for the purpose for which it is being applied. Consultation with the local District Surveyor may be required and a fire- rated ductwork specialist is essential to enable the correct specifications and procedures to be applied. In order to ensure the fire-rated ductwork is correctly specified, several factors should be confirmed and defined.

Check Define the type of system required:

Fire Outside Type A

Fire Inside and Outside Type B

Check Define the type of Ductwork required: Ventilation/Kitchen

Extract/Car Park/ Stair Pressurisation.

Check Determine the fire rating to BS476 Part 24 and the required

time periods for : Stability - Integrity - Insulation

Check Determine static pressure requirements

Low Pressure Class A 500 Pa positive and negative Medium Pressure Class B 1000 Pa positive and negative High Pressure Class C 2000 Pa positive and negative

Check The design team shall be responsible for confirming with

the Client/Consulting Engineer, the stability, integrity’ and insulation requirement (i.e. where the ductwork crosses a means of escape).

Check Identify from the Architect’s drawings, the fire rating of

adjacent walls through which the fire-rated ductwork will penetrate.

Check Obtain details of additional access door requirements for

cleaning.

Check COMMISSIONING OF TEST HOLES - NOT IN OUR SCOPE

Check Where the fire-rated ductwork penetrates any fire-rated wall

a penetration seal has to be installed in accordance with Flameshield Fireduct specification.

Check Define from the contract specification any additional

requirements such as Attenuators, duct cleaning requirements and air leakage variations - VCD & Fire Dampers

FIRE -RATED DUCTWORK SUPPORTS

All fire-rated ductwork supports are calculated, designed and tested in consideration of a fully developed fire (as described in the 150834:1975 (E) fire resistance test standard time - temperature curve) using strict guidelines within the

permissible stress allowances and the specified period of protection required.

FlameshieldTM Utilizes the very latest computerized models to calculate all non- standard support arrangements. Due to the complex design calculations and the importance of having a fully compliant system, no modifications should be made to support arrangements.

FlameshieldTM offer a complete consultancy service with regard to the purchase of fully compliant ancillary plant and equipment. We design fire-rated enclosures to build around non fire-rated fans, fire-rated attenuator casings to incorporate the non fire-rated internal sections and are able to advise on all types of fully compliant air control dampers and motorized dampers to suit all needs and requirements.

ISO 834 : 1975 (E) FIRE RESISTANCE TEST STANDARD TIME - TEMPERATURE CURVE

DUCTWORK CONSTRUCTION

The FlameshieldTM ductwork system is manufactured from pre-galvanised, black &

stainless steel sheet as per FlameshieldTM specification. The fire-rated ductwork has been tested and certified by the Building Research Establishment to meet the following standards:

LPCB Certified.

BS 476: Part 24: 1987.

Furthermore, the Flameshield ranges of fire resistant ducts incorporates and are in compliance with the following standards :

BS 5588: Part 9.

DIN 1.44.

DW 172

Document B1 ( Means of Escape) and B3 (Internal fire spread structure)

Check Suitable for use as a Type A (Fire outside)

and Type B (Fire inside/outside) fire-rated ductwork systems for periods of up to 240 minutes Stability and Integrity, 120 minutes insulation.

Check Suitable as a Smoke Extract system for periods

of up to 120 minutes Stability, Integrity and Insulation.

Check Suitable for Kitchen Extract, Car park Extract,

Stair Pressurisation System and Dishwasher Extract.

Check Suitable for fire-rated ductwork Air Leakage up

to 2000 Pa Class C.

The unique fabrication process for Flameshield Fireduct has many distinct benefits which include:

A. Quicker to Manufacture and Install - no need for the application of external coating

B. More Environmental Friendly - At least six production processes are eliminated.

C. Handles Internal and External Heat - Gas temperatures in excess of 1100 deg. C.
