The Nyquist criterion specifies the necessary and sufficient con- dition that has to be fulfilled by the spectrum X(f ) of x(t) for ISI–free transmission. Pulse shapes x(t) that satisfy the Nyquist criterion are referred to as Nyquist pulses. In the following, we discuss three different cases for the symbol duration T . In partic- ular, we consider T < 1/(2W ), T = 1/(2W ), and T > 1/(2W ), respectively, where W is the bandwidth of the ideally bandlimited channel.
