June 2021 Presidents Columnwithaneededsenseofhumor The 2020/2021 Florida Citrus Crop - down 22%:

30.1 million boxes of Valencias — 22.7 million boxes of Earlies

Picking and hauling only 53 million boxes of Florida oranges to the processors and packers is not sustainable.

None of us expected a 22% crop reduction.

None of us expected to see 40% of our crop drop to the ground.

Will next year be better?

The reports show a decent size and uniform crop—right now. So, we begin our rain dance (let it come in consistent modest amounts; and our dance for the spaghetti models to send the tropical weather cones elsewhere; and our dance for a nice winter-through the February full moon. And just maybe the fruit will size and stick and all will live happily ever after! My story and I’m stickin’ to it.

The reality is that we hear of more unproductive blocs dropped from folks’ production programs. And we may unfortunately lose a few growers in the upcoming season. However, most of us seem to again persevere and look for potential production practice adjustments to bring their crops to harvest in the green.

There is some good news. We’re from the Government - we’re here to help! And it’s true! The Florida legislature and Governor made another investment in our industry. They appropriated serious money for both marketing and research. I want to thank folks like State Senators Ben Albrittion, Wilton Simpson, Kelli Stargel and Debbie Mayfield as well as State Representatives Josie Tomkow, Chuck Clemons, Lawrence McClure and our own Kaylee Tuck, and all of our other agricultural advocates in the legislature for their

support of our industry.

Senator Albrittion is our optimist. He told us that he wants Florida citrus to be well positioned with consumers when production start to climb. He said that was his

rationale in making sure that there was a very significant infusion of marketing dollars for the Department of Citrus for the upcoming season. Retail OJ sales have

continued to be pretty strong. Hopefully, food service sales will follow that trend as more public activity occurs.

Bravo, Representative Kaylee Tuck! She sponsored legislation that

strengthened the Bert J. Harris, Jr. Private Property Protection Act (I could not let that go un-noticed).

Our Association’s Board will next gather on the afternoon of September 9th to hear Dr. Michael Rogers share his point of view on the ongoing research at Lake Alfred. We intend to bring cutting edge research (speakers) to each of our Board meetings. Please feel free to join any or all of our meetings at 3:00 PM the 2nd Thursday of each month.

Maybe we will have some good news rather than a fairy tale!

I hope everyone had both a safe and enjoyable Independence Day while enjoying some quality time with friends and family. We are all truly blessed to live in the great nation that we do, enjoying the freedoms that allow us to engage in the business and personal pursuits of our choosing. I hope that all of you enjoy the rest of your summer to the greatest extent possible!

I want to spend the bulk of this month’s column opining about how we as

members of the agricultural community need to do a better job of connecting with non-ag consumers. The reality is that it is much harder to break through and share

our stories with audiences outside of our relatively small Ag related world than we probably perceive – but we have to keep making deliberate and consistent efforts to do so.

One of the few good things that the past year plus of COVID-19 turmoil has provided is that American farmers and ranchers have offered the public a greater sense of food security. During the height of the pandemic, consumers became more acutely aware of the food supply chain. Consumers now want to better understand how their food is raised or grown, how it is processed and shipped and how the delicate dynamics of the supply chain may impact their choices at the retail level and in food service venues.

So it is our responsibility, both individually, and collectively, as the Covid related crisis abates to some degree to not become complacent about agriculture advocacy or “agvocacy”. We should in fact step up the sharing of our own grove, farm or ranch stories and/or sharing other organizations’ professionally produced content mainly via social media. Social media allows us a no cost opportunity to connect with those that have questions and want to learn about farming and ranching practices — and ultimately the food on our tables.

However it is critical in this quest that we expand beyond our own social media silos and connect with audiences outside the Ag community somehow – and that is the challenge. I certainly don’t have all of the answers on how to expand social media reach or how to exactly make a post go viral. But it only takes a few minutes to “share” something or create original content that you feel helps tell our story. All I know is that we have to keep posting and sharing social media content, because we never know how many folks perhaps even several “shares” away may be impacted.

I encourage you, and/or your family members, to consider expanding (beyond your normal social circle) your social media contacts, even if it is through accounts different than the ones that you or family members utilize to share your more personal stories. Usually when you “friend” or “follow” others in the various social media applications they reciprocate, thus reaching a different set of viewers who themselves then reach a different audience with shared material. It is pretty amazing the potential audience we can gain by including those that we do not have regular contact with or perhaps have never even met in person. You can go to @ OJfromFlorida on Twitter or www.facebook.com/FloridaOrangeJuice. on Facebook for social media content to share or create your own original material.

Our annual Citrus Fun Shoot at Quail Creek will be held on Saturday, December 11th, so save the date.

Even if you don’t shoot sporting clays – you may want to join us for our famous Seafood and Prime Rib Luncheon and raffle drawings.

While we strive to keep our members as informed as possible, please never hesitate in contacting me day or night (cell phone: 863-381-8551) for additional information if you need it; or if I can be of any assistance on any matter, large or small. Remember that if you are not getting regular e-mail updates from us (usually several a week plus this newsletter every month) then we do not have a good e-mail address for you – so please let us know.

Preliminary FDOC Budget Approved

During their June 23

rd

meeting, the Florida Citrus Commission approved a preliminary 2021-22 budget for the Florida Department of Citrus.

The Department’s total preliminary budget is for

$29.1 million with an overall budget increase of

about $10 million over the previous year entirely due to receiving

$17.0 million from General Revenue funds ($12 million more than the previous year) for marketing activities from the Florida Legislature and Governor.

The preliminary budget was based on an estimate of 50 million boxes of oranges, 4.2 million boxes of grapefruit and 900,000 boxes of

specialty fruit. While the preliminary budget is not technically tied to a specific box rate, it was based on a tax assessment rate projection of $.12 per box of processed oranges and $.05 per box of fresh oranges. All grapefruit and specialty fruit is projected to be taxed at

$.07 per box under the preliminary budget.

The preliminary budget does not utilize significant resources from the Department’s fund balance, which had been dramatically reduced over the past several seasons with the remaining funds being carried forward in case of emergencies, smaller than expected crops, etc.

By approving a preliminary budget during their June meeting, the

Commission authorized Department staff to begin work immediately

on programs for the 2021-22 fiscal year, which began on July 1

st

.

The Citrus Commission will set the final box tax rates in October, after

the initial USDA citrus crop forecast on October 12

th

. It seems unlikely

that the final tax rates for the season will change given the significant

infusion of the State of Florida marketing resource. They will then

approve a final budget for 2021-22.

Our office now has a very good supply of the “Take A Florida Orange Juice Break” license plates to share. Please feel free to stop by the HCCGA office and get one for your vehicles. We also have a limited supply of a few other types of OJ related tags. Let’s all show our support for Florida citrus!

Citrus Fun Shoot 2021 December 11 th

Preliminary planning is about to get underway for the 2021 HCCGA Citrus Sporting Clays Fun Shoot.

So save the date, Saturday December 11th, on your calendar for our 24th Annual Fun Shoot and Prime Rib & Seafood lunch extravaganza. The Fun Shoot will be held at Quail Creek Sporting Ranch (new owners & slightly different name) again this year for its 20th year at this great venue.

While this event has continued to evolve over the past 23 plus years, some things remain the same for us – providing a great opportunity for fellowship with others within our industry, fun shooting, great food and some fabulous raffle prizes.

During early August we will be getting our Title Sponsors into place so we can put our shoot flier together and get it out to our members and the public by early September. We expect that most, if not all, of last year’s major sponsors will re-up for this year – however, every year once the flier comes out, some associate member says “boy I wish I could have been a major sponsor of the shoot”. So if you are potentially interested in being one of our Title Sponsors ($1,500.00 including placement for 8 shooters and a lot of good PR), get with Ray or Natasha at the HCCGA office ASAP.

Vouchers for Restricted Use Pesticide Exams

Many people in our industry hold a Chapter 487, Agricultural Restricted Use Pesticide (RUP) license, which enables you to legally purchase and apply pesticides. RUP licenses are valid for 4 years and can be renewed either through earning CEUs or by taking the exams again. If you need to add a new category to your license, you must also take the corresponding exam. The registration process for new or existing licenses is done completely online. One must first obtain a voucher number from FDACS and then schedule an exam at a UF/IFAS Extension county office.

Below you will find the steps to register for an exam along with scheduling your exam time.

Go to the FDACS website: https://aesecomm.freshfromflorida.com/Default.aspx?type=RUP For new licenses, renewal through exam, or to add a category:

• Click on Exam Signup (obtain a new license) or Exam Signup (Add a category or recertify for renewal)

• Select your license type: Private, Public, or Commercial applicator. (If you are unsure of which license you need, click on the “Which license type do I choose?” link below the options.)

• Enter all of your information in the required fields. Hit the Next button

• Verify your information, select the small checkbox, and click Submit

• Choose your category/categories *Note: if you chose the Private applicator license, you will not choose any other categories

• Review your information and select the small checkbox under “Acknowledgment”

• The next screen will provide you with a voucher number. This is very important, as it identifies you when you come in to take the exams. You should print this page and bring it with you. We cannot look up your voucher number at any time.

• Below the buttons to print or email your voucher confirmation will be a link to the UF/

IFAS website to schedule your exam. Follow the instructions to schedule your exams at one of the UF/IFAS Extension offices listed. When you select an office location, the schedule will show the available time slots. If no schedule is visible, call the Extension office at the number listed.

RUP exams are administered online using laptops provided at the UF/IFAS Extension offices.

While some extension offices are not offering testing at this time - the Highlands County office should be able to usually assist with exams on some specific days – contact them at 863- 402-6540 for additional information.
