StorageWorks Continuum for Business Continuity and Availability

Putting information to work

Your business depends on IT more than ever before. The availability of key application services and information is critical to maintain business processes, and the consequences of an outage can be far-reaching. HP offers a full range of business continuity, availability and security solutions that mitigate operational risk and align IT performance with changing business requirements.

To safeguard against the impact of disruption or disaster, you need your key business processes-and the IT infrastruc- ture that enables them-to be adaptive, reliable and resilient.

HP understands how essential information availability is to your business. HP StorageWorks helps you protect and man- age your data with fully tested and qualified solutions.

From a storage perspective, data protection is not a “one size fits all” proposition. It is a continuum of technology and solutions that can be deployed independently to solve a particular protection or availability issue today, or integrated to provide a full spectrum of protection against planned or unplanned interruption in the future.

HP StorageWorks is an integral part of HP's Business Continuity and Availability Solutions. The portfolio includes hardware, software and services that can protect and recover a simple small environment to a mission-critical datacenter. You gain the advantage by implementing HP data protection solutions and putting your information to work!

As shown in Figure 1, HP provides five categories of

Traditional backup and recovery with tape storage

Tape has been used for data storage for more than 50 years. So why is it still used today? Tape has a number of advantages that have yet to be eclipsed by other technologies. Tape offers the lowest cost per GB for storing data. It is a tried and true method of data protection.

Tape's long shelf life-up to 30 years-makes it a dependable medium.

Because the media is small and removable, it is portable.

Data can be stored offline and offsite, providing protection from everything from viruses to disasters like fire, flood, or earthquake. Tape storage puts a lot of capacity in a very small physical space and because the media is removable, capacity is effectively infinite. Tape storage is the foundation of a solid data protection strategy because it is cost-effective and resilient.

HP's solution—HP StorageWorks Enterprise Backup Solution Hp StorageWorks Enterprise Backup Solution (EBS) includes a variety of server operating systems, host bus adapters, switches, disk arrays, tape libraries and software, which helps you consolidate your data protection schemes across multi-vendor platforms. EBS, with its components, scales from entry-level workgroups to enterprise-level datacenters and includes a broad selection of supported backup appli- cations, plus tape technologies, operating systems, and backup applications, which are all compatibility-certified with HP OpenView Storage Data Protector.

Two-stage backup and recovery

This form of backup is directed from multiple servers over a fibre channel SAN or over the LAN to a pool of disk storage. The data is then migrated to physical tape for additional storage, portability and ultimate protection.

Allocation and access to the disk and migration to tape is managed by a central backup server in the environment.

Virtual tape (disk emulating tape backup) involves disk- based products as appliances that logically present themselves to the SAN as tape libraries. This allows seamless integration with existing backup and recovery software while providing the benefits from random access nature of arrays.

HP's solution—Virtual Library Systems

HP StorageWorks Virtual Library Systems is a virtual tape solution that integrates seamlessly into your existing environment providing improved performance and reliability of your data protection process.

Key features include:

• Investment protection through scaling both capacity and performance

• Efficient use of storage capacity

• High availability features provide resilience in the face of component failures

Local replication, continuous data protection (CDP) and near CDP

Local replication

Local replication uses software-based tools that create copies of data volumes within the same storage system (local replication) It allows you to create multiple real-time online copies without adversely impacting primary produc- tion operation. It enables solutions for rapid backup and recovery of data. These replications can be disk-based point-in-time copies (or snapshots) or complete copies (also called clones). With remote replication software, data is replicated either synchronously or asynchronously each time a transaction occurs. In the event of a failure or disaster at the primary site, data is safe on the remote storage system and available for immediate connection to an alternate host.

HP's solutions—HP StorageWorks Business Copy on the Enterprise Virtual Array (EVA) and XP Disk Arrays and HP OpenView Storage Mirroring

HP StorageWorks Business Copy EVA and StorageWorks Business Copy XP are array-based replication software that mirrors data locally, enabling you to recover data in minutes rather than hours. HP OpenView Storage Mirroring provides host-based, real-time continuous replication through patented replication and failover technology, replicating byte-level changes to one or more target servers at any location without geographic limitations.

With HP StorageWorks External Storage XP, you can replicate data to a lower cost array like the HP StorageWorks MSA1500 connected to and managed by the XP Disk Array.

Key features include:

• Enables business continuance using advanced replication technologies

• Seamless interoperation in Zero-downtime and two-stage backup and recovery solutions

Continuous Data Protection (CDP) and near CDP Continuous data protection is different than traditional backup in that you don't have to specify the point in time to which you would like to recover until you are ready to perform a restore. Traditional backups restore data to the point at which the backup was taken. With continuous data protection, there are no backup schedules. When data is written to disk, it is also asynchronously written to a second location, usually another computer over the network. Near CDP is very similar in that data is backed up at frequent intervals (such as every hour), but not with every change.

HP's solution—HP ProLiant Data Protection Storage Servers HP ProLiant Data Protection Storage Server is an easy to deploy disk-based backup solution optimized to provide near continuous protection for corporate and branch office Windows file servers while allowing end users to restore their own files.

Key features include:

• Integrated disk based backup solution that delivers simplicity with its ease of installation and set-up

• Near continuous protection with 96 percent reduction in risk exposure compared to daily tape backup

• End-user file restore to improve productivity, lower cost, and speed recovery

Remote Replication and Clustering

With remote replication software, data is replicated either synchronously or asynchronously each time a transaction occurs. In the event of a failure or disaster at the primary site, data is safe on the remote storage system and available for immediate connection to an alternate host.

While data replication protects against data loss, clustering allows for faster and more consistent start-up of applications following the loss of a node (or server).

In some cases, clustering may also support active-active configurations in which both nodes carry production workloads during normal operation.

HP's solution—HP StorageWorks EVA and XP arrays with Business Continuance Software Solutions

HP Metrocluster with Continuous Access, HP Continental- clusters and HP StorageWorks Cluster Extension offer the highest level of protection: Disaster Tolerance for the enterprise, tiered-enterprise and mid-range storage markets.
