EXTRAORDINARY CAREER

Meeting the needs of healthcare

Chamberlain’s administration, faculty and staff are aggressively confronting the pressing issues currently facing the healthcare community. By forging relationships within healthcare organizations, individual facilities, hospital networks, community colleges and national organizations, such as the National League for Nursing (NLN), Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI), American Nurses Association (ANA) and the Daisy Foundation, Chamberlain is preparing new nurses for the challenges they will face and enabling practicing nurses to fill key

leadership roles and advance care.

Addressing the national nursing shortage

With healthcare reform generating a need for broader population care, nurses are playing a critical role in shaping the future of healthcare. Since 2004, Chamberlain has supported this movement by graduating over 19,000* extraordinary nurses from

our degree programs and program options.

The impending national nursing shortage and the evolving healthcare delivery model mean a world of career opportunities for the nursing field. As a result, the number of unique career paths for nurses is growing and will continue to grow as nurses take on expanded roles in healthcare delivery. Nurses have an unlimited choice of work environments, with options ranging from busy emergency rooms, clinics, hospitals or surgicenters, schools, physicians’ offices, pediatric environments and the military. They can even pursue research, legal nursing, community service, informatics, a corporate environment or healthcare policy.

Whether launching a career or advancing an education, the possibilities for a career in nursing continue to grow over the span of a nurse’s career.

EXTRAORDINARY COLLEGE

More than 125 years of excellence in nursing education

The Deaconess tradition began in 19th-century Europe when Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing, visited a Deaconess facility in Germany and later applied the concepts she learned to her nursing practice. In 1889, an evangelical pastor in St. Louis, Missouri, proposed establishing healthcare services based on the Deaconess model to address the needs of the local community. Those services evolved into the Deaconess School of Nursing, the Deaconess College of Nursing and finally into Chamberlain College of Nursing.

EXTRAORDINARY SUPPORT

Experienced faculty

Chamberlain students can count on a faculty of practicing nurses and professional educators who stay up-to-date on healthcare practices, principles and technology. Professional educators who provide individualized instruction and genuinely care for their students.

An advanced nursing education model

and a commitment to student success

Our faculty and curriculum emphasize learning over teaching – there is a difference. In other disciplines, very often the focus is on learning fast and moving on. That is not a nursing education model. At Chamberlain, our students are evaluated on their ability to analyze, synthesize and apply the information they have learned.

Student success resources

Our dedication to producing extraordinary nurses is reflected in the Chamberlain Care Student Success model – a comprehensive program of tools, resources and support to help our pre-licensure students complete their degree program and succeed as a professional nurse.

Early assessments – Giving new students a clear picture of their strengths

and areas for improvement, plus a customized support plan.

Academic assessments and live review sessions – Helping identify and

remediate any knowledge gaps halfway through the program and at the end of the curriculum.

synthesize and apply their knowledge and prepare for success on the NCLEX. • Center for Academic Success – Assisting students in achieving academic

success with tutoring, assessment, teaching and other resources.

their families to address issues in their daily life or academic performance. • Career Services – Providing career planning, interview and resume support

Chamberlain students practice their nursing skills in safe, simulated learning environments and under the observation of nursing faculty in the clinical setting. Our Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree students take part in approximately 800 hours* of experiential learning (simulated learning, skills labs and clinicals) before

graduation. This extensive training allows them to become competent and confident nursing professionals. * Based on the Chamberlain Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree curriculum, totaling both lab and clinical requirements.

Nursing skills labs and the SIMCARE CENTER

The Chamberlain SIMCARE CENTER replicates hospital and clinical settings and features high-tech training equipment, including high-fidelity human simulators, patient-monitoring equipment, a birthing simulator and physical assessment exam tables. Utilizing the computer control center, our faculty have the ability to alter the simulated patient’s vitals and produce varying symptoms to evaluate a student’s response in real time. These labs provide a safe environment to practice skills and receive immediate feedback.

Clinicals

Through the fulfillment of clinical requirements, Chamberlain Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree students receive meaningful, real-world training in actual healthcare delivery environments. The hands-on experience takes place under the supervision of a professional nurse who acts as the student’s preceptor.

• Unlike many programs, Chamberlain students are not solely responsible for finding their required clinical assignments. Our clinical model, featuring centralized coordination and national compliance, facilitates the process for our students and the organizations that receive them.

• Chamberlain offers students diversified clinical experiences in which to hone their skills in a variety of settings, including: hospitals, long-term care facilities, independent practices, ambulatory care centers, VA medical centers and home health environments – anywhere healthcare is delivered!

More than a college, we are a community

As part of this philosophy, Chamberlain’s focus on student success extends well beyond the classroom and clinical environments. By providing our nursing students the opportunity to expand their educational and professional horizons, we are committed to making a difference not only in the lives of our students, but also in the communities where we live and work, in healthcare as a whole, and in the world at large.

This Interprofessional Global Service Project was led by two distinguished individuals: Susan Fletcher, EdD, MSN, RN professor and director of Chamberlain’s International Nursing Service Project trips, and Mary Coleman, MD, PhD, special advisor to the president of Ross University School of Medicine.

This project holds special significance, not just for the care and services provided to a population in need of healthcare, but for the partnership it demonstrates between two healthcare professions. In a 2008 study developed by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and the Institute of Medicine (IOM) titled The Future of Nursing: Leading Change. Advancing Health,

it was determined that: “Nurses should be full partners with physicians and other healthcare professionals.” Chamberlain recognizes that the need for interdisciplinary collaboration is consistent with what our students will experience in the healthcare delivery environment and we are actively seeking opportunities to promote this ideal in our curriculum, coursework and student experiences.

EXTRAORDINARY ALUMNI

Making a difference

The vision of the Chamberlain Nurse and all of the ideals that this title embodies is not theory or an idea for the future. It is happening right now. Thousands of undergraduate and graduate alumni are already working in the field and making a difference in the healthcare delivery in their communities and around the world. With every new campus we open, every new degree program or program option we add and every graduating class we confer degrees upon, our numbers in the field grow exponentially.

“ My leadership abilities have grown and been recognized

by my company’s senior leadership. In fact, my Bachelor

of Science in Nursing degree capstone project was

implemented company-wide. That is a huge testament

to what I learned at Chamberlain.”

– Dianne, Chamberlain RN to BSN Alumna

The Chamberlain Alumni Association

Our diverse community of more than 19,000 graduates offers our alumni the unique opportunity to connect with healthcare professionals from all around the world. The Chamberlain Alumni Association allows our students to keep in touch with former classmates and faculty, network and make employer contacts. Alumni can also acquire relevant career information, mentor a current Chamberlain

nursing student or just keep up with the many friends they made at Chamberlain.

We also recognize alumni achievements and celebrate their successes. Our alumni recognition awards are one way we communicate the value of a Chamberlain nursing degree to the professional healthcare community. chamberlain.edu/alumni
