How to Build Transformation Literacy

for the Years Ahead

with Otto Scharmer

What have we been learning over the past year that can inform how we approach the remainder of this decade of transformation? We know that we live in a moment of disruption. We know that something is ending and dying while something else in the process of being born. But what is our own role in that journey of transformation? How can we regenerate our economies, advance our democracies, as well as reimagine and reshape our learning systems? How can we address the knowing doing gap that keeps us collectively enacting results that most people don’t want? In this keynote Otto Scharmer will introduce the concept of Awareness-based Systems Change and give examples of how systems sense and see themselves. The keynote will include a journaling practice to apply systems thinking and systems sensing to one’s own context.

Otto Scharmer is a Senior Lecturer in the MIT Management Sloan School and founder of Theory U and the Presencing Institute. He chairs the MIT IDEAS program for sustainability and cross-sector innovation.

Facilitating Change with Social Presencing Theatre

with Dick Baker & Jenny MacKewn

Social Presencing Theatre (SPT) brings to the surface a clearer sense of the relationships, hidden dynamics, and emerging possibilities inherent in us or a larger system. This is not ‘theatre’ in the conventional sense but is a method to make visible both current reality, and the deeper – often invisible – leverage points for creating profound change. It uses simple body postures and movements to dissolve limiting concepts, to communicate directly and to access intuition.

This session will start with a brief introduction to Social Presencing Theatre and its close link to Theory U. It offers a chance to experience some SPT approaches such as the Dance and Stuck exercises. These activities are lively and engaging. AND they are graded so as to make them accessible to all participants.

Jenny MacKewn is a creative catalyst, embodied systemic coach, consultant, trainer and author. She encourages organisations, teams and individuals to transform in response to the needs of the future and of the wider environment.

Dick Baker supports organisations designing and facilitating change and developing new ways of working to better reflect the complexity of the modern work environment to help them navigate sustainably into the future. Dick is passionate about helping organisations engage in purposeful work in a meaningful way in this time of seismic change, in business and society.

Storytelling Evening

with Corinne Harragin and Fiona Eadie

On Monday you are invited to come to an evening of story. Bring a hot chocolate, a comfy blanket, listen and enjoy!

Shifting Shapes

with Corinne Harragin

Follow the twists and turns of story and sinew as we traverse the imaginative landscape of myth and metamorphosis. Explore that mossy forest where the boundary between human and animal, fact and fiction starts to blur and disappear; where goddesses are wrathful, heroes often foolish, goats can talk, and sometimes even the apples are made of gold.

The River Within

with Fiona Eadie

Taking ‘the river is within us’ as her theme, Fiona will be telling two very different traditional stories from very different parts of the world. One, a Jewish story from Afghanistan of a poor man who has nothing and a King’s search for meaning, touches on what is required to flow with the current of life. The other is a tale from Italy of a young woman’s journey towards her fate. Like all stories, neither of these is about one specific thing and each listener will take away from these tales whatever speaks to them in the moment.

Letting Go and Letting Life

with Katherine Long

A key aspect of Theory U process involves letting go of what no longer serves, and which might impede the new life that is seeking to be born. This session offers an opportunity to reflect on what we each might need to release at this time in our history, for inner structures and patterns to dissolve, and to learn from Nature’s ways in allowing the old to die to make way for new life.

An Economy of Place: The Ripples and Patterns

of our Living System

with Jenny Andersson

What is the role of humans on spaceship earth? Do we even have one? Beyond mere existence as a species, we are part of the rich diverse planetary living system that has been evolving for 3.8 billion years. What if we have a distinctive value-adding role to play within the nature that surrounds us? This interactive talk explores the process of transformation from within the organism – like the imaginal cells that activate the emergence of a butterfly. Jenny Andersson explores the power of place and potential in a regenerative economy which she suggests is unlikely to resemble existing forms,

including sustainable models.

Jenny Andersson is co-founder of Really Regenerative CIC, a regenerative and bioregional learning centre in Sussex, England. A former international brand strategist, she has developed brand, communications, CSR and sustainability strategies for some of the world’s most recognisable brand names, always seeking to move organisations to their next evolution as entities. regenerative practitioner, her work is focused on increasing the capacity of individuals and organisations to fulfil their human roles as agents of systemic change to bring a regenerative economy into being - in place.

What is Systems Change?

with Nora Bateson

How do systems learn? In what ways does information find form in and through our relationships to our history, identity, language, education and culture? Where do we get stuck? Where and how do choices appear irreconcilable? We will be looking at Warm Data, transcontextual learning and initiatory ways to explore change through understanding double bind. Nora Bateson is an award-winning filmmaker, writer and educator. She wrote, directed and produced the path-breaking documentary An Ecology of Mind: a portrait of her father, Gregory Bateson. She is author of Small Arcs of Larger Circles (Triarchy Press), a revolutionary personal approach to the study of systems and complexity. Futures Literacy

with Alex Lambie & Loes Damhof

It seems fair to say that humanity has paddled into the rapids. Our boat is called ‘The Poverty of Imagination’ and we bail for our lives as the giant waves of uncertainty smash her against the rocks of complexity, sending some of our heavy societal norms tumbling overboard. But this ‘loss’ reveals new and forgotten perspectives.

Loes Damhof and Alex Lambie will introduce us to Futures Literacy, recently named by UNESCO as critical competency for the 21st Century. By using Futures Literacy to explore why and how we use the future, we can liberate imagination and change how we see and act in the present.
