These are. our contribution.. Where we have found seemed. to us the best. We. should have been poorer. in. we. collect folk. our lives, as well as. in. our. rausic, had we not known such people as Mary Antin and her family (her father. we. loved dearly, as did all. Lewis Cahan, whose body lives. goes far abroad, seeking out. all. in. frue folksingers. and gathering their songs as a bee gathers honey; Semcha Kaplan, who first taught US to love the Yiddish Folksong; Perez Hirshbein, whose plays and poems have touched the plain jargon with magic; Samuel Gerson,Isaiah Shribman, and many others whose kindness has warmed our hearts and whosesongS. have enriched our. We. lives.. are also indebted to the collections of Ginsburg and Marek, andof the. Society for Yiddish Folkmusic,in Petrograd; of Lewis Cahan and Platon Brounoff, in this. WEST,. country; and to the musical Supplement of the magazine. formerly published. OST. und. in Berlin.. CONSTANCE and HENRY GIDEON. INTRODUCTION There is little of the honeysuckle about Yiddish Folksongj ratherthe rosemary and the rue. Even in the expression of love Sentiment, of the young raan’s ardor and courtship, the pattem is ititerwoven with the passionate melancholy of a sensitive race strugglingto spiritual triumph through centuries of suffering. Here and there the mood is lighter, attaining a delightful whimsy, amounting almost to a sly mischievousness, or, under the influence of the Professional wedding-jester (Badchon), developing into broad and rollicking fun. But for the most part one feels theunderlying surge of protest, the cry against inhumanity and oppression, the sorrow and thegrief of long suffering, and the forced repression of so many of the gayer and more spontaneous reactions of life. To hear these songs is to open a window upon the mediaeval ghetto, upon the narrow and crooked streets and the hot tumultuous life of ä crowded quarter, upon the wailing of the wivesand the mothersandthe oniinous shiver of anticipated persecution. Through the notes steal, here and there, shadowy, unforgettable figures, never blatant but always soft, gray, and harmonious; or in a sudden wistful flash there is a Vignette of a mother seated in her doorway, nursing her child and crooning over its futurein a haunting prophecy. All the color of the warm, vivid life of a poetic people is here -here in its purest, most limpid form; the song of the folk, the direct and genuine expression of a racOi.
