Professionals at this level have a college degree with a major in accounting or other related business field andhave from zero to three years' experi-ence. Staff Accountants are expected to become familiar with the firm'spolicies and procedures, understand the rules, regulations and code of profes-sional conduct of the AmericanInstitute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), and progress profesprofes-sionally by working toward passingthe CPA exam as soon as possible. Staff Accountants may have passed the CPA exam, however, this is not arequirement for this level. Staff Accountants are required by the firm to obtain a minimum of 24 hours ofcontinuing professional education annually, although 40 hours is recommended.If assigned primarily to financial statement engagements. Staff Accountants are expected to become familiarwith the pronouncements of the Financial Account-ing Standards Board (FASB), the AICPA, and whenassigned to governmental engagements, the General AccountAccount-ing Office (GAO) and Governmen-talAccounting Standards Board (GASB). If assigned primarily to tax engagements, Staff Accountants areexpected to become familiar with pertinent Internal Revenue Code (IRC) sections and regulations, obtain aworking knowledge of research techniques and sources in the firm's library, become proficient in thepreparation of corporate, individual, partnership, fiduciary and other returns prepared by the firm, and assumeresponsibility for the completion of tax returns under the supervision of more experienced staff.
