Church of the Resurrection is a new church

in and for the heart of New Orleans.

 

We exist to do what every Christian community has been called to do at all times and in all places, to love God and our neighbor through the grace and truth of Jesus Christ.

We believe that he lived, he died, he was resurrected, he will come again -

and we believe that to know him, is to know the fullness of life. Whether you believe that or not, you are welcome here.

Whatever your background, wherever you are between faith and doubt,

the door of this church is open to you.

God mercifully reveals himself to those who seek.

When that happens, there is transformation to the depths. When the church is unified by this power and love,

it is able to take part in the very work of God, making all things new. This is happening in New Orleans.

This is Resurrection’s dream.  Come realize it with us.

Reflection

Every time we look at the cross, Christ seems to say to us, “I am here because of you. It is your sin I am bearing, your curse I am suffering, your debt I am paying, your death I am dying.” Nothing in history or in the universe cuts us down to size like the cross. All of us have inflated views of ourselves, especially in self-righteousness, until we have visited a place called Calvary. It is there, at the foot of the cross, that we shrink to our true size.

When Jesus died, He died as my representative, and I died in Him; when He arose, He rose as my representative, and I arose in Him; when He ascended up on high and took His place at the right hand of the Father in the glory, He ascended as my representative and I ascended in Him, and today I am seated in Christ with God in the heavenlies. I look at the cross of Christ, and I know that atonement has been made for my sins; I look at the open sepulcher and the risen and ascended Lord, and I know the atonement has been accepted. There no longer remains a single sin on me, no matter how many or how great my sins may have been.

It is never on account of its formal nature as a psychic act that faith is conceived in Scripture to be saving. It is not, strictly speaking, even faith in Christ that saves, but Christ that saves through faith. The saving power resides exclusively, not in the act of faith or the attitude of faith or nature of faith, but in the object of faith.

19 And the disciples did as Jesus had directed them, and they prepared the Passover.

20 When it was evening, he reclined at table with the twelve. 21 And as they were eating, he said, “Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.” 22 And they were very sorrowful and began to say to him one after another, “Is it I, Lord?” 23 He answered, “He who has dipped his hand in the dish with me will betray me. 24 The Son of Man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.” 25 Judas, who would betray him, answered, “Is it I, Rabbi?” He said to him, “You have said so.”

26 Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.” 27 And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you, 28 for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. 29 I tell you I will not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom.”

Confession of Faith: Colossians 1

He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.

For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth,

visible and invisible,

whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things,

and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning,

the firstborn from the dead,

that in everything he might be preeminent.

For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven,

Sermon Text: Exodus 12:21-27

“God’s Solution to Our Great Problem”

21 Then Moses called all the elders of Israel and said to them, “Go and select lambs for yourselves according to your clans, and kill the Passover lamb. 22 Take a bunch of hyssop and dip it in the blood that is in the basin, and touch the lintel and the two doorposts with the blood that is in the basin. None of you shall go out of the door of his house until the morning. 23 For the Lord will pass through to strike the Egyptians, and when he sees the blood on the lintel and on the two doorposts,

the Lord will pass over the door and will not allow the destroyer to enter your houses to strike you. 24 You shall observe this rite as a statute for you and for your sons forever. 25 And when you come to the land that the Lord will give you, as he has promised, you shall keep this service. 26 And when your children say to you, ‘What do you mean by this service?’ 27 you shall say, ‘It is the sacrifice of the Lord's Passover, for he passed over the houses of the people of Israel in Egypt, when he struck the Egyptians but spared our houses.’” And the people bowed their heads and worshiped.

Confession of Sin

Almighty God, Everlasting Father,

forgive us when we follow paths that do not lead to life, paths which lead to fear, and hate, and selfishness. Forgive us when we forget

that you offer us free and abundant life,

life that began with you at the creation of all things, life that is full of joyful rest.

Strengthen us that we may turn to Jesus in all things, to take his yoke upon us over any other,

to learn from him, follow him,

and hope in his salvation for the rest of our days. We pray this in the great and good name of Jesus, for the sake of His Kingdom on Earth.

It Was Finished Upon That Cross
