Volume 25 Issue #7
Philosopher, essayist, poet, and novelist George Santayana (1863-1952) was born in Spain and raised and educated in the United States from the age of eight. Perhaps his most remembered line is from his work, The Life of Reason (1905): “Those who cannot remember the past are
condemned to repeat it.” The truth of this statement is seen in the books of the Bible we have moved through so far.
God’s people repeatedly failed to learn from the mistakes of those who went before them. They keep neglecting to hold fast to the Lord God, to obey God’s commandments, to worship the Lord alone, to care for the widow, the orphan, the alien, and the poor.
In the Historical books of the Bible, like Joshua, Judges, 1 and 2 Samuel and 1 and 2 Kings, the pattern continues. Regardless of the word of prophets, leaders and common people alike keep failing, living selfishly, immorally, greedily, violently, and grasping for power. We can wonder how people can make such obvious errors in judgment, yet in our own time the pattern continues. Individuals and nations can ignore the past and God’s voice and act foolishly or out of fear instead of wisely and out of faith. We want to learn from history, so we don’t repeat the mistakes of the past.
In worship in September, we’ll be looking at some significant Biblical characters including Samuel, Solomon, and Elisha. Samuel was one of the greatest prophets and leaders in Israel’s history. He learns at a young age to listen to the voice of the Lord and to respond. Solomon is associated with wisdom and while he asked for wisdom, he didn’t live wisely. Elisha is a fearless prophet who acts with courage when people all around him give in to and act out of fear.
As we look ahead to the future, we also need to listen for God’s voice and to respond. Like Samuel, we can say, “Speak, Lord, your servant is listening.” Unlike Solomon, we can do our best to live wisely and to make godly, informed decisions that are a blessing not only
for ourselves but for the common good. Like Elisha, we can respond to threats and challenges with faith and courage.
The above qualities are all needed because we’re in a season of change at BBC that began a year and a half ago with the coming of COVID-19. People who have been a significant part of our church, who have been leaders, excellent volunteers, and generous supporters of our ministry have moved or will soon be moving away, almost always to be closer to family, which is totally understandable, but their departure is a significant loss for us. The pandemic has made it harder to engage in so much of what we have known as the life of the church and many of you are not comfortable, for good reasons, attending anything in person at the present time.
Yet we still have a mission to fulfill and good news to share. People need hope, community, and courage now more than ever. If you are blessed by your involvement at BBC, I urge you to pray about who you can introduce to BBC by sending links to our worship services or daily devotions. If you have room for more people in your small group, you might talk with the other participants about inviting someone to join you.
I pray the Lord will guide and direct us as we continue to move forward walking by faith and not by sight.
Grace and Peace, Pastor Doug Scalise

Ministry Fair:
Sunday, September 12
As we prepare for the fall at BBC, we’ve been asked many questions about what ministry opportunities are available. What is available for families? What organizations do we support through Missions? How can I get involved in a Small Group? What’s happening with the Holiday Fair? How can I use my gifts to serve at BBC? Come join us for our annual Ministry Fair on September 12. Our Core Ministries will have tables set up in Fellowship Hall after each service to share information about the programs, events and volunteer opportunities that will be available beginning this September.
Wilderness Retreat: Hiking the Adirondacks
One of the recurring themes in Pastor Doug’s messages this summer, along with Israel’s journey out of Egypt, has been the idea of finding ourselves “in the wilderness” of life. This August, I had the opportunity to take a multi-day retreat in the 6-million-acre Adirondack State Park. The views were breath-taking, the company was terrific (led by a fellow pastor), and the experience memorable. A question was posed each of the three days: What are you seeking in the wilderness? Where do you need God today? What would you like to take from this experience? Each morning provided opportunities for a light but hearty breakfast, physical exercise, and navigating the paths of our twenty- something mile hike in the wilderness. This whole experience reminded me first of the beauty of the camping experience (we stayed in lean-tos and tents), and second how I can take time each day to exercise and eat healthy, pack light, walk far, and go deep to meet God in the questions. Last year, I took a similar trip into the White Mountains of New Hampshire. This year’s trip to New York reminded me of the beauty of
God’s creation and just how wonderful life can be. It was a wonderful time of renewal, reflection, rumination, and rhyme.
Trips like this often serve as reminders that we don’t have to leave Cape Cod to see the beauty of God’s creation or enjoy such times of reflection. Taking a walk along the Cape Cod Rail Trail, Russells Path, or around any of our wonderful neighborhoods provides similar opportunities to breathe in fresh sea salt air, see beautiful flora and fauna, and meet our neighbors, yet another reminder that God’s grace abounds and meets us where we are today.
Prayers for your journeys, Rev. Joe Greemore
For those who have been regularly attending, the 8:30 a.m. service will resemble our two earlier services, and the 10:00 a.m. service will resemble our 11:00 a.m. service. With our summer worship attenders returning home, we can easily accommodate everyone attending worship in person at two services. Having two services also significantly reduces how many volunteers we need and provides the opportunity for people from both services to see each other in the 30 minutes in between.
Advisory Council
Su Ballantine, Advisory Council Chair 508-237-2292 C [email protected]
As we move from summer into fall, we continue to have challenges. If you’ve been to Brewster Baptist Church in person or have been streaming the services, you are aware that volunteers are needed in many areas of the church. My personal plea is for the media booth since we are losing key members of the Tech Team within the next few days/weeks due to college and grad school.
I wanted to take this opportunity to give you some information so you can consider being part of the team that enhances the experience of worship within the church itself and streams it out to those that can’t attend in person, intrinsically linking them to our worship community. Here’s some of what you need to know:
•
Wednesday nights at 6:00 p.m., the Tech Team and the Praise Teams rehearse the music for both services to adjust the sound, check the slides for projection, and train newcomers to the team.Participation is designed to be the Wednesday before team members are scheduled the following Sunday.
•
Sunday mornings, the Tech Teams assigned to specific services arrive 30 minutes in advance to prepare for live streaming, become acquainted with any necessary details, and make adjustments to any changes to the services. Newcomers can observe operations at this time and experience a controlled introduction to their operational assignment.•
Every effort is made to accommodate preferences for operations, but the goal is to have team members proficient in multiple disciplines which allows for better scheduling and ensures a quality service.I can’t stress enough what a great core team we have and how eager we are to welcome new members. I also have difficulty expressing how rewarding it is to know you are providing access to the Word! We are so blessed to have great pastors at BBC, as well as wonderfully talented singers and musicians to share with so many folks!
Please consider being part of this team. If you have questions or want more information, please contact me at [email protected] or (508) 237-2292 or Pastor Joe Greemore at (508) 896-3381 or [email protected].
God bless, Su Ballantine

Student Ministry
We are excited to get Student Ministry going this fall using our newly renovated space under the chapel! If you haven’t had a chance to take a look at it yet, please stop by and see it after worship sometime.
We want to give our students a chance to get back into the rhythm of school before we get started, so we’ll begin the middle of September. Friends are always welcome!
Here is our upcoming schedule for the fall:
Parent Meeting: Sunday, September 12 at 6:30 p.m.
Tim and Sharon would like to have an opportunity for our parents to get to know each other and to share a little more about our plans for the fall and ways that we can work together to make this the best experience we can for our students. We will meet in the new Student Ministry area.
First and Third Fridays – Grades 6 though 12, meets in the Student Ministry Area Fall 2021 Dates: September 17, October 1 and 15, November 5 and 19, and December 3 and 17.
Fun Game nights on the First and Third Fridays of each month starting on September 17 from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. This is a great time for kids to bring friends as an entry way to coming to our Sunday night Bible study.
Beginning September 19, Sunday School Classes for Middle School and High School will be during the 10:00 a.m. service.
Weekly on Sunday Evenings starting on September 19:
(No meetings on October 31, November 28 or December 26) Middle School (Grades 6-8) from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m.
High School (Grades 9-12) from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.
We are overlapping our meeting times in order to have separate Bible Study times and give all our students time together in the middle for games and fellowship.
Our Middle School group will continue their study of “The True You: Finding Your Identity In Christ,”
answering one of the most universal questions for teenagers: “Who Am I?”
Our High School group will begin “Simple Truth” exploring life-shaping, thought-provoking, Jesus- centered truths that can transform us into the kind of people God created us to be.

The Finance Team would like to thank everyone for their generous support of Brewster Baptist Church. The continual financial support has been astonishing despite the pandemic of COVID-19.
People continue to give to our General Fund, Deacon Assistance Funds and Special Offerings. Praise God!
Now we are almost through the first eight months of our budget calendar, and our overall projected budget is $802,000. Through August 23, BBC has taken in $786,333 towards our general budget which is very close to our original projected budget. To date, we have only spent $697,331 which is well below our projected budget and has put BBC in a very strong position for the rest of the year.
The Advisory Board gave the green light to renovate the area below the Chapel. New furniture, dry erase boards, a television, bookcases, and a coffee station were added. The team did a great job painting and putting everything together. The new Student Ministry Area looks impressive! Stop by and check it out!
Special Offerings continue to be a strength at BBC. In 2021, BBC has taken in over $57,690 in Special Offerings.
• Thank you to everyone who has supported the One Great Hour of Sharing (OGHS). Through August 23, BBC has taken in over $20,454 which will go to help those impacted by both natural and human-made disasters around the world.
• The Deacon’s Fund has taken in over $10,000 to help people in need with rent, car repairs, utilities bills, and summer camps.
• Another $1,000 has been received for the Caring Cupboard Food Pantry.
Thank you for your generosity! Remember, you can give to the church on Sunday morning in person, by mail, via text, or online.
