Francis speaks of the church as a field hospital where the sick and wounded are nourished and cared for. Jesus gave Communion to Judas. St. John Paul II gave Com- munion to Protestants and pro-choice politicians. The bishops should presume goodwill on the part of anyone who comes to the Lord’s table. If they want to be united with Christ and his community, they should be wel- comed.”

Fr. Thomas Reese, “Six suggestions for the Catholic bishops’ document on the Eucharist.” Religion News Ser- vice. September 7, 2021.

“The Gospel teaches us that God has an eye for the out- siders and those who are in any way marginalized by the society. In Jesus, God champions the cause of the down and out: the tax collectors, the blind beggars, the lepers, the foreigners, the widows, the poor et cetera. Their rights become the object of God’s concern and action in the world.”

- Bishop Vincent Long Van Nguyen (Diocese of Parra- matta, Australia). “’Dear friends’ – Bishop Vincent’s homily from 5 September 2021.” Catholic Outlook. Sep- tember 5, 2021.

“Men are abandoning higher education in such numbers that they now trail female college students by record lev- els. At the close of the 2020-21 academic year, women made up 59.5% of college students, an all-time high, and men 40.5%, according to enrollment data from the Na- tional Student Clearinghouse, a nonprofit research group.

U.S. colleges and universities had 1.5 million fewer stu- dents compared with five years ago, and men accounted for 71% of the decline.

- “A generation of American men give up on college: ‘I just feel lost.’” Wall Street Journal. September 6, 2021.

“Hope will come from us, the people, from our will to overcome hatred. Each of us has a resilience within us, and a capacity to say no. This is what is needed to change not only one's own destiny, but also that of an entire community…

“In this context, religious leaders must bring hope.

Hope is one of the Christian virtues and I am convinced that a new dawn is on the horizon.”

- Cardinal Dieudonné Nzapalainga, head of the Catholic Church in the war-torn Central African Republic. “An African cardinal who seeks to ‘disarm hearts and minds.’”

La Croix International. September 3, 2021.

“The current climate crisis speaks volumes about who we are and how we view and treat God’s creation. We stand before a harsh justice: biodiversity loss, environ- mental degradation and climate change are the inevitable consequences of our actions, since we have greedily con- sumed more of the earth’s resources than the planet can endure. But we also face a profound injustice: the people bearing the most catastrophic consequences of these abuses are the poorest on the planet and have been the least responsible for causing them. We serve a God of justice, who delights in creation and creates every person in God’s image, but also hears the cry of people who are poor. Accordingly, there is an innate call within us to re- spond with anguish when we see such devastating injus- tice.”

- Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, Pope Francis, and Justin, Archbishop of Canterbury, in “A Joint Message for the Protection of Creation,” the first joint statement from the world’s three most influential Christian leaders, representing 1.6 billion Christians.

Vatican.va. September 1, 2021.

“We're taking more than the Earth can give. Too much of the last century has been dictated by the selfish ambi- tion of individuals of the global north of corporations all in the pursuit of more money and more power.”

- Andrew Schwartz, Center for Earth Ethics operations director, during an online meeting of faith-based organi- zations, titled Facilitating a Global Dialogue. “God is calling on humanity to fix world's food broken systems.”

Independent Catholic News.

September 7, 2021.

“I assure my prayers for the people of the United States of America who have been hit by a strong hurricane in recent days. May the Lord receive the souls of the de- ceased and sustain those suffering from this calamity.”

- Pope Francis, during his weekly Angelus address last Sunday.

“As Christians, we have to reject all totalitarianism, all anti-Christian doctrines, whether it’s from the woke left or the racist right.”

- Author Rod Dreher, speaking to a group of journalists and representatives from Catholic associations following the presentation of his new book, Live Not by Lies: A Manual for Christian Dissidents. “In Rod Dreher’s new book political left, right threaten public religious prac- tice.” Crux. September 3, 2021.

REFLECTION

We need to get our bearings straight and properly lay life’s cornerstone. Otherwise, the rest of our journey will be skewed, and our judgment clouded. We can recall Je- sus’ famous rebuke of Peter, “You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do.” Even he, as one of Jesus’ closest friends struggles with understanding things and grasping the big picture. Pierre Teilhard de Chardin (1881-1955) a renowned and learned French Jesuit priest often has these words attributed to him: “We are not hu- man beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a human experience.” Whether they were actually from his lips, they certainly mimic his thought.

These wise words orient us and capture the essence of who we really are.

Many people consider spirituality an option. It is no wonder that they come to this conclusion when they pre- dominantly define themselves using human terms and concepts. Immersed in this world view, they struggle finding any semblance of God because God does not work according to human expectations! This is especially true when suffering and death enter life’s picture. If we are only human beings having a spiritual experience, then we wrongly expect our spirituality to serve us as we de- sire. The human expectation is that my spiritual life is something that is useful in avoiding pain, hardship, and death, not something that gives the courage to live through it!

So, when we protest and get upset with God because our journey is becoming difficult, painful, treacherous, disappointing, and even pointing us toward death, Jesus rebukes us as he did Peter and gently reminds us how to see. It is God who inspires and opens hearts to see truth and beauty. In God, the true meaning of things is under- stood, and we receive a depth of insight and understand- ing that is not found following purely human paths. It is not our task to understand God, as God is beyond hu- man understanding. Ours is the joyful privilege of simply resting in God’s presence simply because God is God and we are who we are. As spiritual beings having an ex- citing and adventurous human experience, it is in our DNA to do so. Through prayer we can let go and let be.

This is how we lose our lives but then save them. ©LPi

PARTNERS IN CHARITY

As Fr. Jared mentioned at Mass, the parish has sent

$11,000 to provide food, supplies, and needed services to the people of Haiti, who are suffering after the earth- quake of August 14, which left more than 2,000 people dead and thousands more injured. More than 25,000 homes were damaged or destroyed, and nearly 300 Cath- olic churches were lost.

The funds were sent to Catholic Relief Services, which is well established on the ground in Haiti, ensuring that our donation will be turned into immediate relief for our desperate brothers and sisters.

The entire amount of our offering comes from the rev- enue we receive from our bulletin sponsors. Earlier in August, our publisher sent us a check for $11,000, repre- senting our 2-year share of ad revenue. (The publisher also covers printing costs, which amount to more than

$10,000 for the same period.)

We thank our bulletin sponsors for providing our week- ly bulletin and for partnering with us in our mission to serve the poor and needy. Please go out of your way to thank them and patronize their businesses.

WORLDWIDE MARRIAGE ENCOUNTER Worldwide Marriage Encounter is sponsoring virtual marriage experiences. Some are on weekends, and there are seven sessions on weekdays from 7:00 to 9:30 p.m.

Couples will explore their individual personality styles, improve listening and communication skills, understand God's plan for their marriage, and learn how to keep their relationship a priority.

Registration is limited and a $100 application fee is re- quired. For more information or to apply, call at or visit them at https://wwmema.org/

SOUTH COUNTY HABITAT FOR HUMANITY South County Habitat for Humanity is in the process of a Faith Build project. With the help of churches in South County, we are rehabbing a duplex home in Westerly. It has two 2-bedroom units for affordable homeownership. One unit is dedicated for a local veter- an, and his family. The other unit is currently available, and we are still accepting applications.

To find out more, check out their website:

https://www.southcountyhabitat.org or call Alicia Johnson at 401-213-6711.

We are also putting together a team of adults to repre- sent Christ the King Church to help with the re-

hab. Our next service date is Saturday, September 18, from 8:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. Teens from 16 - 18 can also volunteer with an adult. No experience is re-

quired. Volunteers receive on the job training. If you are interested in joining the team, send an email to Den- ise Plante at droseplante@gmail.com

INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK

Rest in the presence of God simply because God is God and you are you. This is all that is necessary. Out of this relationship will come inspiration, understand- ing, courage, constancy, truth, and virtues of all kind.

We will find ourselves knowing the true meaning of things and developing a depth of insight that is not found following purely human venues. It is God who inspires and opens human hearts to see truth and beau- ty. In God, we understand all of our relationships with a richer appreciation and come to know who Jesus, who speaks of God’s kingdom, really is. The trust that is fostered from resting with the Divine One allows us to see that God’s ways are not our ways. There is some- thing bigger going on in this picture of life. It is some- thing mystical and magical that seeks to surprise us at every turn. It is not for us to cling to this world and its limitations. Our adventure is to dream bigger and brighter, realizing that it is even in suffering that the radiant light of the dawn will come. God’s ways allow for our paths to be rocky, challenging, difficult, and even crippling at times. Purely human eyes cannot un- derstand the ‘why’ of such experiences. The eyes and mind of God, however, reveal and detail a journey that ends in glorious resurrection joy. When we lose our axis and become too human in our thinking, Jesus rebukes us and gently reminds us how to see. ©LPi FRIENDLY VISITOR MESSAGE

When it is difficult to get out of the house, no matter the reason, it can be difficult to get motivated to do anything, even get dressed some days. One of the easi- est ways to help boost your energy is to have something different to look forward to. Friendly Visitors can be an answer. We have members of our parish family who would love to stop by and visit with you (by phone if you'd be more comfortable with that) from time to time. Just a visit, no set agenda. You decide what to talk about. Call Bonnie Feeney at 391-9460. Don't put it off, do it today.

MUSTARD SEED

“No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wast- ed.” Aesop

Mustard Seed is looking for acts of kindness you wit- nessed or performed yourself during Hurricane Henri.

Did you or your kids or neighbor bring a cold drink to rescue or clean-up personnel? A hot meal to someone without electricity? Did you help rake fallen leaves or pick up a neighbor who could not get out of the drive- way? Remember: it’s not bragging to share; it’s inspir- ing the rest of us to do more! Please contact Kathy Pesta (kathyp9195@verizon.net) or Marie White (mbwhite422@gmail.com). Thank you!
