Opening Hymn: 684 Come Unto Me, Ye Weary

LSB 684

(Worship Supplement, p. 12)

We invoke (“call upon”) the name of the one true God – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

P In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C Amen.

Confession and Absolution

We come before our Holy God recognizing that we are sinful and daily need His forgiveness.

P We have come into the presence of God, who created us to love and serve Him as His dear children. But we have disobeyed Him and deserve only His wrath and punishment. Therefore, let us confess our sins to Him and plead for His mercy.

C Merciful Father in heaven, I am altogether sinful from birth. In countless ways I have sinned against You and do not deserve to be called Your child.

But trusting in Jesus, my Savior, I pray: Have mercy upon me according to Your unfailing love. Cleanse me from my sin, and take away my guilt.

P God our heavenly Father, has forgiven all your sins. By the perfect life and innocent death of our Lord Jesus Christ, He has removed your guilt forever. Through faith in Him, which was created in you by the Holy Spirit, you are His own dear child. May God give you strength to live according to His will.

C Amen.

Latin for “O Lord.” We approach our Lord with a cry for help in all the needs of our earthly life.

W.S. p. 13

Lord have mercy on us. Christ have mercy on us. Lord have mercy on us.

Gloria in Excelsis

Latin for “Glory to God in the highest.”

W.S. p. 13

Glory to God, we give You thanks and praise;

Of heav’nly joy and peace on earth we sing.

We worship You, to You our hearts we raise, Lord God, almighty Father, heav’nly King.

Lord Jesus Christ, the Father’s only Son, You bore for us the load of this world’s sin.

O Lamb of God, Your glorious vict’ry won, Receive our prayer, grant us Your peace within.

Alone, O Christ, You only are the Lord, At God’s right hand in majesty most high:

Who with the Spirit worshiped and adored, With all the heav’nly host we glorify.

Prayer of the Day

P We pray:

Lord Jesus Christ, You withdrew Yourself for times of prayer and brought Your disciples with You that they might also rest with You. Be present with us during this time of worship and spiritual rest that, gathered together in Your name, we may profitably meditate on Your Word and be strengthened with a good will to serve You and Your people. We pray this through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C Amen.

First Reading Psalm 116 (Responsive – Selected verses) (NKJV)

P I love the LORD, for he heard my voice; he heard my cry for mercy.

C Because he turned his ear to me, I will call on him as long as I live.

P The cords of death entangled me, the anguish of the grave came upon me;

C I was overcome by trouble and sorrow.

P Then I called on the name of the LORD:

C "O LORD, save me!"

P The LORD is gracious and righteous;

C Our God is full of compassion.

P The LORD protects the simplehearted;

C When I was in great need, he saved me.

P Be at rest once more, O my soul, C For the LORD has been good to you.

P For you, O LORD, have delivered my soul from death, my eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling,

C That I may walk before the LORD in the land of the living.

P How can I repay the LORD for all his goodness to me?

C I will lift up the cup of salvation and call on the name of the LORD.

P Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints.

C Praise the LORD!

P O LORD, truly I am Your servant; I am Your servant, the son of Your maidservant;

C You have loosed my bonds.

P I will offer to You the sacrifice of thanksgiving, C And will call upon the name of the LORD.

Second Reading

Romans 7:15-25a (EHV)

P The second reading is from Romans 7:15-25a.

C Sanctify us by Your truth, O LORD. Your Word is truth!

15 For I do not understand what I am doing, because I do not keep doing what I want.

Instead, I do what I hate. 16 And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good. 17 But now it is no longer I who am doing it, but it is sin living in me. 18 Indeed, I know that good does not live in me, that is, in my sinful flesh. The desire to do good is present with me, but I am not able to carry it out. 19 So I fail to do the good I want to do.

Instead, the evil I do not want to do, that is what I keep doing. 20 Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who am doing it, but it is sin living in me.

21 So I find this law at work: When I want to do good, evil is present with me. 22 I certainly delight in God’s law according to my inner self, 23 but I see a different law at work in my members, waging war against the law of my mind and taking me captive to the law of sin, which is present in my members. 24 What a miserable wretch I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? 25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord!

P Blessed are they who hear the Word of God and keep it!

Alleluia and Verse

When God speaks to us in His Word it is natural for us to respond. We sing “Allelujah!”—meaning, “Praise the Lord!”

Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

These words are written that we may believe That Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God.

Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

Apostles' Creed

We boldly confess what we believe. W.S. p. 15 C I believe in God, the Father Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried.

He descended into hell.

The third day He rose again from the dead.

He ascended into heaven

and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.

From there He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Sermon Text: Matthew 11:25-30 (NKJV)

25 At that time Jesus answered and said, "I thank You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and prudent and have revealed them to babes. 26 "Even so, Father, for so it seemed good in Your sight. 27

"All things have been delivered to Me by My Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father. Nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and the one to whom the Son wills to reveal Him. 28 "Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 "Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 "For My yoke is easy and My burden is light."

Sermon Theme: Rest in Jesus!

1. Spiritually

2. Eternally

W.S. p. 16

 

Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a right spirit within me.

Cast me not away from Your presence, Take not Your Holy Spirit from me.

Restore to me the joy of Your salvation.

Uphold with Your Spirit free.

We offer our gifts to the Lord, remembering that He has first given to us that we might have to give to Him.

( The offering plate will not be passed around during the service to reduce contact.

If you have an offering to give today, please place it in the plate in the church entryway. )

Sermon Hymn: 699 I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say

LSB 699 (tune of LSB 366)

1. I heard the voice of Jesus say, “Come unto Me and rest;

Lay down, thou weary one, lay down Thy head upon My breast.”

I came to Jesus as I was, So weary, worn, and sad;

I found in Him a resting place, And He has made me glad.

2. I heard the voice of Jesus say, “Behold, I freely give

The living water; thirsty one, Stoop down and drink and live.”

I came to Jesus, and I drank Of that life-giving stream;

My thirst was quenched, my soul revived, And now I live in Him.

3. I heard the voice of Jesus say, “I am this dark world’s light.

Look unto Me; thy morn shall rise And all thy day be bright.”

I looked to Jesus, and I found In Him my star, my sun;

And in that light of life I’ll walk Till trav’ling days are done.

Prayer of the Church / Prayer Requests

We bring our prayers to God.

Lord’s Prayer

C Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name,

Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven;

give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

The blessing given by God for the blessing of His people (Numbers 6:24-26).

P The Lord bless you and keep you.

The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you.

The Lord lift up His countenance upon you and T give you peace.
