Jesus is Lord!!
! Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,!
!
This coming Saturday, February 25th all men of the parish are invited to attend the 20th Annual Catholic Men for Jesus Christ Conference that will be held at Saint Joseph Church in Toms River, NJ. This has been a special day for so many of our parishioners who have attended over the years. The speakers at this year’s Conference will be Tim Staples, Catholic Apologist and Evangelist, Congressman Chris Smith, Marie Joseph, Executive Director of Legacy of Life Foundation. The highlight of the day will be Holy Mass celebrated by the Most Rev. David M.
O’Connell, Bishop of Trenton. To register for the Conference please visit the website:
www.catholicmenforjesuschrist.org. A special invitation goes out to all the men who are participating in St.
Mary’s That Man is You! (TMIY!) to attend this Men’s Conference.!
!
Next Sunday, February 26th, I want to invite all our parishioners to attend a Charismatic Prayer Meeting at 3:00pm in the Narthex of the Church. Charismatic Prayer Meetings are great blessings and “fun” to attend. I often recall the =irst prayer meeting I attended years ago. I was struck by the “joy and love” that was present among those who were attending the meeting. The people gathered to “rejoice in the Lord” singing songs of praise and worship, shared words from the Bible, grew in their relationship with Jesus and each other, and as I said, had “fun.” Sunday afternoon Prayer Meetings provide us a another wonderful opportunity, in the midst of living in hectic times, to “keep Holy the Lord’s day.” I hope you can attend our prayer meeting next Sunday. !
!
Wednesday, March 1st is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the Holy Season of Lent. Parishioners who participate as adorers at the Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration Chapel will speak at all the Ash Wednesday Masses and service encouraging parishioners to sign up to be an adorer during Lent. What a great way to celebrate Lent and the Lord himself invites us to “Come back to Me.” Everyone should start praying now on how to make this the best Lent ever!!
!
Looking ahead in Lent. Our Lenten Mission this year will be held from Monday, March 20th to Wednesday, March 23rd. Father John Gordon, Director of Evangelization for the Archdiocese of Newark will lead our Mission. Father Gordon is a gifted preacher and evangelist. He has served on the faculty of Seton Hall University Immaculate Conception Seminary/School of Theology, and as director of Priestly Formation at Franciscan University of Steubenville in Ohio. It will be a blessed Mission, please make sure you save the dates.!
!
As you know, each week our parish staff gathers for a weekly Holy Hour where we pray for you and the ministries of our parish. If you have any special pray request you would like us to pray for during the Holy Hour, please go the Saint Mary, Mother of God Church Facebook page and write them in the comment box for the Holy Hour. The Holy Hour will also be LIVE on Facebook on Wednesday at 2:00pm. Join us online!!
!
Have a blessed week!!

RCI@ LIVING THE CHURCH YE@R
!In the Catholic Church, Lent is a very special season of getting ready. During this time to make ourselves ready to celebrate the greatest
mystery of our faith the death, burial and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. Because this is so!central!to our faith, it is important during this special time of year to recall that Jesus also reconciles
people through the sacrament of penance. More time should be taken in preparation for confession. Simply
because a person does not move from sinfulness through conversion to reconciliation in seconds. It will
vary according to each penitent. Lent is a very special season for RCIA...a season of getting ready. !

If you put all the problems mentioned in last week's chapter, there is only one logical solution; get rid of the problem group that no longer had any viable reason for existing. The question though was: How can one abolish what was established by the apostles? The answer was simple. Keep it, but make it transitional toward membership in the stronger political constituency. Have deacons become priests.!! This did not happen all at once, everywhere. There isn't a speci=ic date to commemorate the "fall." Each bishop facing the situations described above reacted in his own way, for only his diocese. For example, if a particular bishop had a deacon who was too popular, or overly political or disobedient, could he not ordain him a priest and ship him off to a backwoods village parish? These actions slowly developed into a pattern that resulted in a more universal way of doing things. Not being resisted, these actions were supported by a populace that came to prefer being ministered to by priest, rather than by lowly deacons.!
! Wilhelm Schamoni concluded his wellresearched analysis of the history of the diaconate in the rural areas by saying: so, in the transitional period between antiquity and the early middle ages, when the church expanded into the country areas, the deacon did great work as precursor and pioneer of the priest in the =ilial churches; by virtue of his ordination, he acted as leader of the community. As a general rule, however, this stage of development continued only in unimportant centers where conditions were unfavorable.
Since he had no authority over the keys (he could not absolve sins) and could not consecrate the Eucharist (although he could distribute it), the deacon was, sooner or
later, replaced by the priest.!
! What lessons are to be learned for the permanent diaconate in the PostVatican II church? For one thing, their roles is not, and cannot be allowed to be perceived as in competition with the rest of the hierarchy. As the name implies, deacons are servers to all the church, clerics and laity alike. Secondly, the call to caritas must be responded to in ever more unique and effective ways. Institutes of care (hospitals, nursing homes, homeless shelters, etc.) are no longer operated solely by religious communities. These state facilities need a deacon's presence, just as individual homes in the parish do. Finally, Vatican II has brought us back to the original understanding of the Eucharist as a community celebration. Permanent deacons should be part of any liturgical celebration that brings Jesus to the people, and the people to God. But this role in the community must be a backdrop to the deacon's primary charism, service. !

Monday, February 13, 2017, the 3rd! grade students at Saint Mary School passed through Ellis Island to become American citizens. ! Under the guidance of teachers Mrs. Robin Copertino and Ms. Marie Matassa, the students prepared for this day for the past month. !They learned all about what it was like for immigrants to journey to the United States and pass through Ellis Island. !The students created an immigrant persona and then played the role of that of an immigrant coming through Ellis Island. !They were questioned by inspectors, evaluated by medical personnel, passed a citizenship test, and recited the oath of citizenship for a judge. !Once they were admitted to the United States, the stu- dents were treated to a lunch of chicken noodle soup by the cafeteria workers and they completed some patriotic crafts. !The students’ family members played tremendous roles in this special day by becoming the inspectors, medical personnel, cafeteria workers, and judges. !A great day was had by all.!Who s[ys you ][n’t \_

@ MESS@GE FROM OUR PRINCIP@L
These past few weeks at Saint Mary School were a powerful reminder of all that is good with Catholic education.! The Saints celebrated Catholic Schools Week with a myriad of activities designed to focus on both the school’s and Church’s mission to evangelize and share the Gospel with others.!!
! These activities included: ice pops to celebrate the students’ Polar Plunge efforts, a 5
thgrade presentation of Hope in My Heart written by our own Jonathan Butts, a Journey through the African Rainforest with Master Percussionist John Arrucci, a Teacher Appreciation Luncheon provided by the!
PTA, and a Saints Alive Spirit Rally featuring a student/faculty volleyball game followed an eyeopening presentation and appeal to support pediatric research.!!
! All these activities were “bookended”, of course, by our Saint Mary School liturgies which are
unabashed expressions of our Faith and the highest form of prayer in the Church.! Our students fully
engage in the celebration of the mass and truly look forward to attending on Friday mornings.! All in all,
it was a great time to be a Saint Mary School student!! I invite you all to come visit us and see what
makes Saint Mary School a wonderful Catholic school community.
