(4) Home Heating Assistance for Seniors As winter fast approaches, I wanted to share some state programs that can help you with home heating assistance and savings on energy bills: Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) – LIHEAP helps low-income individuals and seniors pay their heating bills during the winter. Eligible recipients can either own or rent their home and cannot have an income greater than $31,271 for a single person or $40, 893 for two. For more information, please call the Massachusetts Heat Line toll-free at 1-800632-8175. Please apply ASAP for this program, as there is a processing period. Citizens Energy Heat Assistance Programs – Citizens Energy Heat Assistance has two programs for home heat assistance. The Citizens Energy Oil Heat Program offers free heating oil to people in need. Each eligible household is allowed a one-time delivery per heating season of 100 gallons of home heating oil. The Citizens Energy / Distrigas Heat Assistance Program gives a $150 utility bill credit to eligible households who heat with natural gas. Eligible recipients are facing a financial hardship and are not eligible for LIHEAP, or have used up their LIHEAP benefits. To apply, please visit www.citizensenergy.com or call 1-877-JOE-4-OIL. Other Helpful Programs: The Weatherization Assistance Program – helps increase energy efficiency and lower heating costs for low income owners and renters. The National Medicare Debate While the debate on the future of Medicare is played out on the national political stage, I think it is important to understand our current Medicare system and the proposed voucher program being offered as an alternative. Currently, Medicare and its many parts referred to as Parts A through D, cover things from hospital care (Part A), to outpatient care (Part B), to prescriptions (Part D.) The federal government is the administrator of Medicare and cost the federal government $486 billion in 2011. Under the voucher program, seniors would receive a voucher for a predetermined amount of coverage that they would use to choose a private insurance provider or Medicare. The voucher program aims to limit the amount of funding that the federal government provides for the Medicare Program. It is important to understand what both political parties are saying about the future of Medicare as we prepare to vote on November 6th..

(5) Medicare Open Enrollment October 15 – December 7 Its that time of year again! If you have Medicare, sometime during the month of September you should have received important information from your Prescription Drug Plan, your Medicare Health Plan, and/or Prescription Advantage (if you are a member). You need to read these letters carefully to understand the information they contain. You should ask a family member or trusted friend to help you if you do not understand this information. DO NOT IGNORE ANY LETTERS FROM YOUR PLANS! SAVE ALL LETTERS FROM YOUR PLANS! The annual Medicare Open Enrollment (October 15 - December 7), is the only CHANCE you have to CHANGE your coverage for next year. State-certified SHINE (Medicare) Counselors can help you understand your plan changes, as well as other options you may have. Make your SHINE appointment early. During the month of October our Regional Office will be conducting informational sessions throughout Worcester County. We have scheduled meetings in the following towns Pepperell, Groton, Shirley, Winchendon, Holden, West Brookfield, Sturbridge, Hopedale, Medway, Auburn, Uxbridge, Templeton, Northbridge and Barre. You can call your local Senior Center to ask about a meeting near you.. DO NOT WAIT UNTIL IT’S TOO LATE! You can now access our monthly SHINE chat line, sponsored by the Central Massachusetts Agency Aging, on the second Tuesday of each month. To attend the SHINE Session, go to www.SeniorConnection.org and click on Connection for Caregiver button. Then click on the Support Groups and Chats button. Create a username and password, log in and click on SHINE.. If you need help on any aspect of your health insurance, SHINE offers free counseling at your local Senior Center or Council on Aging. Call your Senior Center or COA and ask for a SHINE appointment. You can reach a SHINE volunteer by phone at 1-800-AGEINFO (1-800-2434636) If you get the SHINE voice mail, leave your name and phone number and a counselor will call you back as soon as possible.
