Gas Alliance - Traditional CNG Station design - Standards
There are no UK, European or International standards for CNG stations!
UK have a withdrawn standard (but can still be referenced)... The Institution of Gas Engineers Utilization Procedures:
• IGE/UP/5 Pt 1 – Design & Installation of Filling Stations • IGE/UP/5 Pt 3 – Filling Station Operations
• IGE/UP/5 Pt 2-4 – Vehicle Fuel Systems & Operations
Europe has a draft standard..
• CEN TC 326 (prEN 13638) – NGV Filling Stations
And Germany has VdTUV510 – Guideline for planning, construction,

Gas Alliance - Traditional CNG Station design - Standards
IGE/UP/5 Pt 1 – Design & Installation of Filling Stations
• Legal & Allied Considerations (i.e. HSAWA, Gas Act 1986, PSR) and Competency
• Gas supply and metering (system protection, gas quality etc.)
• Gas compressors (design, gas recovery, PRV’s, pipework, filtration etc.) • Gas Storage (PRD’s, certification etc.)
• Shut down and safety systems (valves, procedures, isolation, HP pipework, buried pipework, pressure testing etc.)
• Vehicle filling dispensers (Hoses, nozzles, vent systems, control systems, metering etc.)
• Testing & commissioning (purging)
Gas Alliance - Traditional CNG Station design - Standards
IGE/UP/5 Pt 3 – Filling Station Operations • Hazardous Area Zones (Zone 1,2,3 etc.)
• Precautions against leakages (Barriers, inspection, testing, replacement etc.) • Operating & Emergency Procedures (Inspection, Testing, Maintenance etc.) • Notices & Instructions (isolation valves, “No Smoking” signs etc.)
• Emergency Action & Equipment (999, Fire extinguishers etc.)
• Gas Dispensing operations (nozzle type, instructions, notices, usage etc.) • Gas Storage Operations (Examination & testing)
• Gas Compressor Operations (Permit to Work System etc.)

Gas Mains
Gas Meter CNG Compressor
Slow-fill (time-fill) CNG station (grid supply)
Ideal for small fleets, depot based operations (overnight parking), and large bus fleets. Not suitable for public access stations.

Gas Alliance - Summary
Summary
• Traditional grid CNG station: Design, installation and costs – great
idea and available now, then switch to Biomethane through the grid
once more AD and Sewage plants come on-line and start injecting
in the grid.
• Biomethane opportunities: Biogas production, Gas clean-up and
grid injection – cost effective use of renewable gas leading to a
“perfect circle” of waste production and energy use
• Future transport fuel is biomethane from renewable biogas
supplied through the grid and accessed at point of use
