Early Years delivers a wide range of in-service programmes that continue our drive to improve practice by applying an appropriate play based curriculum. Our training is for parents, all adults working with young children in pre-school settings, daycares, Sure Start, nursery and foundation stage and management committees. All of our training helps develop the confidence and competence of the participants in the understanding of play and the needs of young children across the statutory, voluntary and independent sectors.

Training programmes and materials are reviewed annually and are based on evidence from research and best practice to deliver outcomes for young children.

For more information on dates of courses or to discuss programme contents, contact the training department on 028 6634 2696, training@early-years.org. Places on courses are strictly limited so early booking is advisable. Early Years courses can also be viewed and booked on line at www.early-years.org/training.

Bespoke programmes can be arranged on request. Programmes can also be delivered outside of Northern Ireland.

A certificate of attendance is given to all participants upon 100% attendance of courses.

OCN-NI Accreditation

A number of courses are accredited by the Open College Network NI to Levels One, Two and Three.  The Level indicates the depth and complexity of knowledge, understanding and skill required of a learner.  For Level 1 accreditation participants will be required to complete reflective personal learner logs together with short written tasks. For a Level 1, learners should already hold an NVQ1 early years or equivalent qualification. For Level 2 accreditation participants will be required to complete a short portfolio along with personal learner logs, summary of discussions and weekly activity sheets. Level Two is comparable to NVQ2, Intermediate GNVQ and GCSE grades A-C. A short assignment is required in addition to the above for those working to achieve Level 3.  All work is completed at regular intervals during the learning process. We are

currently working to map a selection of our

training courses to the Qualifications and Credit

Framework (QCF) in the UK and the National

Framework of Qualifications in the South of

Ireland.  Further details are available on request.

The Media Initiative for Children

(MIFC) Respecting Difference

Programme

A comprehensive training programme for practitioners and teachers

The MIFC Respecting Difference Programme is an intervention programme aimed at improving long term outcomes so that children, practitioners, teachers, parents and communities can become more aware of diversity and difference issues and positively change attitudes and behaviours to those who are different.

The programme combines cartoon media messages with an early years programme and resources for children aged 3-6 years.

The three days Introductory Training enables participants to reflect on their own attitudes to difference as well as providing them with opportunities to explore the Media Initiative resources and become skilled and confident in using them. A Service Design Manual has been developed to support and assist participants to implement the programme and to weave it naturally into the early years curriculum. A large Randomised Controled Trial has been carried out on the MIFC by Queen’s University and the full report was published in autumn 2010. The headline results showed that the programme has the potential to make a difference to young childrens attitude to difference.

Follow-up training on the programme is also available.
