Twenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Theme: “This Man Welcomes Sinners and Eats with Them”

My Brothers and Sisters: Today we celebrate the 24th Sunday in ordinary time. Jesus declares today, “I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to

repen-tance.” (Luke 5:32) God’s word to us today is clear. It is through Jesus Christ’s meritorious death on the cross and his constant pleading for us in heaven, that God forgives our sins. “I shall … go to my heavenly Father.” This is what the sinner should do, and God will show mercy. Jesus is welcoming sinners.

We are told today that tax collectors and sinners were all seeking the company of Jesus to hear what he had to say, and the Pharisees and the Scribes complained. “This man they said, “welcomes sinners and eats with them.” Jesus heard what they said. He answers them with an example taken from their daily lives. To the man listening to him, Jesus speaks of a lost sheep, since many of them are shepherds. He says, “What man among you with a hundred sheep, losing one, would not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness and go after the missing one until he found it?”

To the woman in the crowd He speaks of a lost coin, or piece of money. “What women with ten drachmas (coins) would not, if she lost one, light a lamp and sweep out the house and search

thoroughly until she found it?” continued on page 3

Desde el Escritorio del Pastor

Veinticuatro-avo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario

Tema:

Jesús declara hoy: “No he venido a llamar a justos, sino a pecadores, al

arrepen-timiento.” "Yo ... iré a mi Padre celestial".

(Continued from page 1)

Jesus always speaks to his audience of simple and common things around them. He puts questions to them to make them see their ways. The crowd knows that this is what they would do. They would look for their lost property until they found it. And when they found the lost sheep or their lost coin, they would be very happy indeed.

Jesus goes further to say, “I tell, you, there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one repentant sinner than over ninety-nine virtuous men who have no need of repentance.” These words must have surprised His listeners. And perhaps some of them were upset, and even annoyed. They may have started grumbling, “What is the point of being virtuous then, if God is happier with sinners?” This is not said in the gospel however, but some of us here may be thinking like this on this Sunday after hearing the gospel.

Let us put it in the back of our head that Jesus has come to show us who God our Father is. Today, we hear Him telling us again and again that our Father is a merciful Father. He is full of compassion and is always ready to forgive. It is not that He does not love virtuous people. He made clear that “virtuous” men and women have no need of repentance and do not recognize their need for God because their salvation is secured for being virtuous. God has given them His special help.

Two weeks ago, we said that Jesus knows us. He knows what is in our hearts. He knows very well that we are sinners. Many times, we do not do the good we would like to do. Often too, we do the bad things we would like to avoid. We are weak. Most people are not really wicked, but weak. This is our human condition. God knows it better than we do. And he loves us as we are. Our sins do not prevent Him from loving us. On the contrary, He sees that the more we sin, the more we need his help to change our ways. Even when we sin greatly, we are like Paul in the second reading who says, “Mercy has been shown me, because until I became a believer, I had been acting in ignorance.”

Many of us are like St. Paul. We know God’s commandments, but we do not always see clearly. We always make the wrong choice. Sometimes we do not want to listen to His voice in our hearts. However, we should have hope. St. Paul goes on further to say, “Here is a saying that you can rely on and nobody should doubt; that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.” Paul repeats, “We can only rely on his words and no one should have any doubt about what he says. “Christ came into the world to save sinners.” Paul sees himself as the greatest sinner. He says that God has forgiven him so that it may be clear to everyone that God has an “inexhaustible patience for all.” Often, we see ourselves as sinners, and we think we are far from God. But God is never far from us. No matter the sins we commit, He is always near. He is waiting that we turn to Him and ask for his forgiveness. In fact, he is not waiting, he comes to us and he puts into our hearts a true sorrow for our sins. We see the sinner in ourselves, but God sees more than that. Let us make Him happy by asking for the forgiveness he wants so much to give us. Let us tell Him the words of today’s psalm: “Have mercy on me God in your kindness; in your compassion, blot out (wipe out) my offense; cleanse me from my sin.”
