04 January 2021 PLTP / 01 / 2021

Dear Parents/ Guardians, Principal’s note

2020 was indeed a very challenging year for all of us as we responded to the massive disruptions at both national and school level due to the COVID-19. However, we also saw the best in our people as we manage the challenges. The entire education fraternity—teachers, staff, students, parents—came together and found ways to keep our students learning. In essence, it took a village to save this school year. We certainly look to the New Year with hope and optimism.

We are proud of our students’ resilience and achievement in 2020. We continued to perform well in the PSLE and we wish our class of 2020 as they move on to secondary schools. While we are not yet out of the COVID-19 situation, we want to give thanks to our supportive parents who work alongside with the school. We are deeply appreciative that HBL and SMM are implemented smoothly with your continued support, encouragement and understanding. A school can only be effective when the parents and the community support the practices and learning programmes of the school.

Due to COVID-19, we have seen many innovative disruptions involving technology which affect our personal and work lives. In the aspect of learning and teaching, we have seen that home-based learning offers the possibility of creating uniquely valuable learning experiences for our students. We believe, with a sense of optimism and excitement, that there is an even greater potential for blended learning to become an integral part of school life which would improve learning greatly in our school. Teachers need to leverage the highly interactive nature of web-based learning applications to make students’ learning accountable by enhancing their ability to reflect, apply, elaborate, contextualise, evaluate and synthesise their learning, and not just in navigation, page scrolling and indulging in information search.

However, technology remains just one part of the equation to engage learning in school and at home. Without the guidance of a skilful teacher and supportive home environment, effective independent learning cannot take place. We will continue to explore effective teaching strategies to build up the students’ character, learning dispositions, and values and inculcate a sense of identity in this blended learning environment.

On behalf of the school, we would like to wish all of you a healthy and bountiful 2021!

Koh Chin Thong, Martin Principal

3 COVID-19 Safe Management Measures (SMM) and Security

The school believes in providing our pupils with a safe and secure environment to ensure that good learning takes place. To achieve this purpose, we seek the strong collaboration with parents and the community. As a school, we will adhered to all safe management measures (SMM) and will enforce them for all staff, pupils, parents and visitors. These measures include the wearing of mask, visitor registration, SafeEntry check-in and temperature screening. All pupils are also required to conduct their temperature check daily in class with their own Oral Digital Thermometer (ODT). As part of SMM, the school also ensure that our pupils and staff practice good personal hygiene through frequent hand-washing as well as wiping down of surfaces (classroom and canteen tables) before and after using them. The school will also be practising fire drills, lock-down drills and evacuation drills to ensure that our school staff and pupils are familiar with all emergency drills.

Schools will re-open in 2021 with Safe Management Measures (SMM), such as temperature taking, visual screening of students, and reducing congestion where possible. It is not mandatory for students to have a TraceTogether token when schools re-open. It will be required in schools only when all of the tokens have been distributed nationwide. Please collect for the TraceTogether token when the token is available for collection in your constituency. We will understand that schools will only distribute the tokens when the collection at the current venues ceases.

While most Co-Curricular Activities (CCA) and school activities will resume, higher-risk activities will remain suspended or limited to a smaller group. You are reminded not to send your child/ward to school if they are unwell or have flu-like symptoms.

4 Staggered Dismissal Timings and Vehicle Pickup Points

In addition to the list of safe management measures (SMM) mentioned earlier, the school has also reviewed and implemented staggered dismissal in Jun 2020. These are all in an effort to decongest and ensure safety for our children. The key decongestion strategy is to stagger the movement of students from the classrooms to their various pickup points and also to ensure sufficient space for at the pickup points to provide safe distancing.

(4)

While the daily dismissal timings do not change, the school will stagger the release of students from their classrooms by levels. This is to minimise congestion at the corridors and staircases as they move to their respective pickup points and gates. We have also reviewed the space congestion of the various pick-up points and made some changes to the vehicle pickup point. Pickup Points for Children Walking or Taking Public Transport. There is no change to the various pickup points for this group of children. The school will continue to designate waiting areas by levels with sign post to minimise intermingling across levels. However, we urge all adults waiting to pick up their child to observe safe management measure; to wear mask and observe safe distancing at all times. We will have staff onsite to manage and they can turn away anyone without a mask or not adhering to safe distancing.

Pickup Points for Children to be Picked Up by Car. To ensure further spatial segregation for our students while waiting for their parents, we have now two designated pick-up points for Lower Primary (P1-P3) and Upper Primary (P4-P6) students.

Level Pickup Point Access Gate Gate Opens Lower Pri,

P1 to P3

Level 3 Foyer Via Gate 2 1250H to 1345H on Mon, Tue & Fri 1320H to 1415H on Wed and Thu *Pick up after gate closure time will be at Bus Bay (Level 1 via Gate 4) Upper Pri,

P4 to P6

Level 1 Bus Bay Via Gate 4 After all the school buses have left the Bus Bay.

Est. 1315H on Mon, Tue & Fri Est. 1345H on Wed and Thu NOTE:

For family with children from across levels, the Lower Primary child(ren) will always follow the Upper Primary sibling’s pick up point. This will be the permanent pick up point; for instance, on days where the Upper Primary child is staying back in school for lessons, the Lower Primary sibling will still proceed to the Bus Bay for pickup. This is to ensure simplicity and consistency for the children and parents.

Traffic Reminder:

As the road along Holland Drive are strictly demarcated as “No Parking” zone, parents are reminded not to come to the school before the gate opening time. The school staff and LTA enforcement officers will enforce this, and pictures might be taken for follow-up by LTA. This is to ensure that we traffic along Holland Drive can flow to facilitate the expeditious movement of buses and cars out to the main roads.

5 Traffic Issues

As you are aware, Henry Park Primary School is a big school with a large student population. Traffic to and from the school during the school reporting times and dismissal time can be very heavy. We would like to appeal to you to help the school ensure a safer and smoother traffic flow. Please follow the instructions given by our staff and parent volunteers. Do give them your full understanding and cooperation so that we can ensure the safety of our pupils.

In the morning, if there is a traffic build up at level 3, please drop your child off at level 1 Bus Bay. Please note that only a right turn is allowed at level 1’s exit. We have noted some parents making illegal left turns at level 1’s exit and there have been near misses. For your safety and of other motorists, we appeal to you to adhere to the traffic guidelines. Both left and right turns are permitted at level 3’s drive-way exit.

(5)

Please refrain from sending your child to school before 6.30 a.m. To avoid morning traffic congestion, you may drop your child at school by 7 a.m. & arrive 20 minutes after dismissal to avoid afternoon traffic congestion.

The school gates will be opened 10 minutes before dismissal time. We would also like to remind parents not to arrive too early before dismissal and park their vehicles along Mount Sinai and Holland Road as this will result in a traffic congestion.

Please refer to Appendix 1 for gate opening hours for arrival and dismissal.

6 School Bus

We like to remind parents whose children are taking the school buses that on days when your child is not taking the school bus back home at the standard dismissal time, please inform the bus driver in advance. This is to avoid holding up the bus as the driver will try to locate your child before moving off.

7 Pupils’ Well-Being

In the next few days, the school will collect the pupils’ workbooks, files and materials, and placed them in the classrooms. Pupils should use their timetable to guide them in packing their school bags so that they can better manage the weight. We seek your assistance in guiding your child/ward in the matter. Our collective efforts will ensure that our pupils’ school bags are not too heavy.

Our P1 students will adjust well to primary school with our active support. We need our parents to encourage your child to be independent but if they need any help, to confidently approach their teachers so that they can be assisted. Children have to learn to manage homework and cope with assessments. Support from parents is critical at this stage.

For a start, encourage your P1 child to talk about his/her new experiences and what he/she likes and doesn’t like about school. Listen for any worries he/she might have and attend to those concerns. It is easy as adults for us to brush aside what seem to be small matters, but it is helpful to learn to see things through his/ her eyes.

As your child adapts to school life, show your support in other ways, such as valuing him/her for who he/she is, and not what he/she has achieved. Instead of comparing his/her performance with others or expressing disappointment when he/she is not performing up to your standard, appreciate his/her efforts and focus on the learning process - not only on the marks!

8 Snack Break

To cater to the well-being of our students, all students may have daily 10-minutes snack breaks during lessons time as planned by each level's class teachers. Snack break timings will be arranged by teachers who will reference the staggered recess times of each level. Depending on the nature of the lessons, the teachers will instruct the students when they will have the 10-minutes snack break during the period and day.

We seek your cooperation in packing healthy snacks or fruits for the 10-minutes snack break & encouraging your child/children in taking responsibility for the maintenance of the cleanliness of the classroom by observing hygiene protocols and completing the necessary wipe down procedures after finishing their food.

9 Annual Prize Giving Day Webpage 2020

The Annual Prize Giving Day (online) was held on 17 November 2020 for the P6 students and 18 November 2020 for the Primary 1 to 5 students. It was a joyous celebration as we recognised our students’ academic, character and talent achievements together with their teachers, parents and classmates. In consideration of the safe management measures that had to be put in place due to the COVID-19 situation, we had our PGD conducted virtually in the classrooms via the Zoom platform. The event was hosted by our students. Parents of our prize winners were invited to share in this proud moment with the prize winners and their classmates.

The school will share this memorable event via the Annual Prize Giving Day Webpage 2020 where you can view the Principal’s, Guest-of-Honor’s and our Outstanding Student’s speeches, concert items as well as photos of all our prize-winners. This webpage will be launched on 22 January 2021 and the link for the website will be posted via Parents’ Gateway.

13 Recycle N Save Initiative

As part of the school's continuous Green effort to encourage a sustainable lifestyle, the school has partnered with National Environment Agency (NEA) and F&N to launch the "Recycle N Save" initiative. The initiative aims to inculcate good recycling habits and responsible environmental stewardship in our students. A Reverse Vending Machine (RVM) has been placed at the canteen to offer a convenient way to recycle aluminum cans and plastic drink bottles. Below is the picture of the RVM for your reference.

(8)

Students only need to rinse the empty bottle or can before placing them into the RVM. The bottles and cans collected in the RVM can then be transported to the recycling facility. We would like to seek your support at home to encourage our students to play their part for the environment through the active practice of the 5Rs –Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Re-purpose and Recycle, in school and at home.
