Arup SIGMA

1

has been established in Port Louis,

Mauritius since 1975. Our office of 80 staff has

gained a reputation for delivering solutions of high

quality in the fields of structural, civil and

environmental engineering with a history of

projects in both the private and public sectors.

Our approach to business is aimed at developing

projects based on the cornerstones

of sustainability; environmental integrity,

economic viability, efficient resource utilisation

and social welfare.

We understand the nature of the major investment

our clients commit to their projects. We believe that

these investments must be safeguarded and that

they require workable, holistic, cost-effective

solutions that are sustainable over time - they must

be capable of meeting today’s expectations and

future demands. Our deep understanding of the

most pressing local and international business

issues allows us to address each project in the most

relevant way.

By our commitment to team working, creative

thinking, technical excellence and sustainable

design we, in collaboration with our clients, strive to

deliver projects which both enhance the

environment and improve the quality of life.

Our mission is to shape the future of development both in Mauritius, and with our projects overseas, through;

• Providing the highest level of local technical expertise and competency, complimented where appropriate with specialist input from our overseas offices.

• Understanding ‘island wide’ concerns facing energy supply, water supply, transportation, waste, urbanisation and the environment.

• Focusing on issues that are critical to the viability of projects throughout their full life-cycle.

• Applying a holistic approach to balancing the requirements, and impacts, of development.

• Engaging with clients and project stakeholders at the earliest possible stage to identify choices and to maximise opportunities.

• Providing expertise in undertaking sustainability assessments and managing the process of successful implementation.

Our Mission

Arup SIGMA

Over the last 10 years Arup has developed SPeAR®, a software based assessment tool, to assist governments and businesses in the decision making and planning process.

(4)

Arup SIGMA is a Mauritius registered company and a wholly owned subsidiary of Arup Group (Arup).

Arup, which is wholly owned in trust for the benefit of its employees, enjoys total financial independence and has an annual turnover in excess of £800 million (GBP). A substantial proportion of the firm’s income is devoted to improving its technical standards through the continuing professional development of its members and by developing new techniques of engineering design and management.

Arup is one of the largest and most successful international engineering, planning and design consultancies with almost 10,000 staff working in 37 countries through 90 permanent offices. Our wide network of offices uniquely enables us to provide global expertise combined with local knowledge. Ove Arup founded the practice in 1946. Sir Ove’s ideals and principles are as much a driving force now as they were in his lifetime. Foremost among these are the belief in ‘total planning and design’ - the integration of the planning, design, operations and construction processes, the interdependence of all professionals involved and the value of innovation.

Arup has retained a strong presence in Africa since the 1950’s. The Mauritius office, established since 1975, forms part of the Arup Africa network of offices which includes South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Nigeria.

Arup SIGMA’s long standing and strong presence in Mauritius ensures that the unique principles of the firm are applied locally in the most appropriate and relevant way. Our business activities are conducted with a thorough understanding of the regulatory framework, national development policies and local procurement/construction practices.

Our Organisation

Mauritius

(5)

Arup SIGMA employs approximately 80 permanent technical and support staff, including engineers, project managers, resident engineers, CAD technicians, a survey team and administration staff. A high proportion of our engineers are Mauritian Registered Professional Engineers or equivalent.

Our offices at 19 Church Street, Port Louis are equipped with meeting and presentation facilities, as well as the latest in communication, design software and document production systems. All members of staff have access to the global Arup Intranet which provides instant access to a vast database of design, technical, contractual and project related information. This extensive ‘knowledge sharing’ platform allows us to apply skills and expertise learnt from Arup’s projects across the globe on issues such as sustainability, climate change, building energy performance etc.

We have strong links with our colleagues in Africa, Australia, the Middle East and the UK and are able to draw on the additional skills and resource available within these offices when necessary.
