Elective Units Handbooks Medicine and Nursing Courses 2

FACULDADE DE MEDICINA DE MARÍLIA 2015

1 - Introduction

This booklet aims at explaining the active educational units to be carried out by the students of FAMEMA Medical and Nursing Courses.

Elective Educational Units take place from the second to the sixth grade in the Medical Course and from the second to the fourth grade in the Nursing Course.

Elective Educational Units last six weeks (240 hours) from the second to the fourth grade in the Medical and Nursing Courses. In the medical fifth grade they last four weeks (160 hours) and in the Medical sixth grade they last five weeks (200 hours). The number of weeks must be fully accomplished – 40 hours each week. Three study areas may be included in this study; they are not cumulative nor transferable to another week. The student must follow the schedule and the rules of the area which offers the training period. (e.g. holidays, rules about proper dressing, schedules etc.).

The students are free to choose and organize the Elective Educational Units since they are relevant to their course curricula which must be discussed with their supervisor. Elective Educational Units aim at giving the students opportunities to actively participate in the building up of their own curricula by choosing their areas of interest, by defining their fragilities, deepening their knowledge and developing their cognitive, psychological and emotional resources.

The students must design a work plan and have it analyzed/adjusted by their supervisor and by the professional responsible for the Elective Educational Unit. It must include evaluation and the tasks to be carried out. The tasks must apply knowledge to professional practice and integrate different disciplines to develop a widened clinical reasoning which suits the conditions of the individual and collective health necessities.

Elective Educational Units must be carried out in FAMEMA in the local health services and also in other institutions in the country or abroad which present the students different realities. These experiences allow an early contact with the real job market. The students will be able to reflect and practice according to the specific conditions of each service.

Formats and forms have to be filled out to apply for a training period, to establish the tasks to be performed, the objectives to be reached and to organize a schedule which displays the students’ activities in a pattern week.

Formats 3 and 5 evaluate the student and the Elective Educational Unit respectively. They must be delivered at the General Secretariat right after the training period is finished. Format 3 is meant for the responsible professional to evaluate the student according to the following criteria: :punctuality, class attendance, responsibility, initiative, capacity for team work, communication and specific abilities such as asking questions, searching after information, understanding concepts, integrating and articulating information, criticizing and analyzing information as well as sources, making hypotheses, applying knowledge, integrating biological, psychological and social dimensions. Format 5 must be filled out by the student to evaluate his/her training period.
