About us

The ZHAW

BSc and MSc

programmes and

continuing education

The Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW) is one of the leading universities of applied sciences in Switzerland. Teaching, re-search, continuing education, consulting and other services are scientifically based and practi-ce-oriented. The ZHAW comprises eight speci-alist Schools on three campuses (Wädenswil, Winterthur and Zurich). Over 10,000 students are currently enrolled at the ZHAW.

The School of LSFM

The School of Life Sciences and Facility Management (LSFM) is located in Wädenswil on the left shore of the Lake of Zurich. Teaching and research take place here in the areas of the environment, food and nutrition, and health and society. Courses include five Bachelor’s and two Master’s degree programmes and a broad selection of continuing education op-tions. About 1,500 students are currently en-rolled in Wädenswil.

The School is ISO 9001 certified and meets state and cantonal requirements for educational institutions. In addition, our continuing educa-tion courses are eduQua certified.

The Bachelor’s programme provides practically oriented knowledge, general education and training in working methods, and leads to a professional qualification. Full-time study nor-mally takes six semesters, and part-time study is possible by arrangement. During your stu-dies you acquire professional, methodological, social and personal competences.

The Master’s degree programme enables you to specialise more intensively in your chosen direction of study and leads to an additional qualification. The three-semester Master’s pro-gramme can be studied full- or part-time and leads to the protected and internationally re-cognised title “Master of Science ZFH”. At the ZHAW in Wädenswil two Master’s programmes are currently offered: Life Sciences (with four specialisations) and Facility Management. Ongoing continuing education and a commit-ment to keeping one’s knowledge up to date are now vital requirements for professional success. At the ZHAW there are customised, practically oriented courses, conferences and continuing education programmes (CAS, DAS, MAS*). These are taught at Wädenswil and at the Zurich Technopark campus (for FM conti-nuing education).

* CAS = Certificate of Advanced Studies DAS = Diploma of Advanced Studies MAS = Master of Advanced Studies.

Our institutes carry out application-oriented re-search and provide services for third parties in partnership with business, authorities, professi-onal associations and other research institutes. Close cooperation with external clients ensures that there is an exchange of knowledge and technology between the university and the world of work. Our equipment and facilities are state-of-the-art: our laboratories, experimental and production facilities enable us to carry out application-oriented research and develop-ment projects at a high level of expertise. As a student, you also benefit from these activities.

Interdisciplinary science

Biotechnology is the interdisciplinary combina-tion of biological, medical and technical scien-ces. The aim is to produce or analyse useful compounds derived from beneficial micro- organisms, animal and plant cells, or their com-ponents. Biotechnological methods allow the production of substances that are difficult or impossible to produce by purely chemical me-thods. In bioanalytics, biological principles are studied with a view to analytical applications.

Biotechnology

Are you interested in natural sciences such as biology, biochemistry and molecular biolo-gy? Do you enjoy performing experiments and would you like to develop new products? Then the Bachelor’s degree programme in Biotech-nology is just the thing for you – whether you choose to study full-time or part-time!

In the basic studies (1st + 2nd semesters) you

gain theoretical foundations, e.g. in biology, chemistry, microbiology and industrial

enginee-ring. In the subject-specific studies (3rd + 4th

se-mesters) you expand your knowledge and skills, e.g. in cell biology, pharmacology, bioenginee-ring technology and environmental technology.

In the specialisation studies (5th + 6th semesters)

you gain detailed knowledge of your chosen

specialisation – Biotechnology or

Phar-maceutical Technology. Practical work and project weeks enable you to improve your skills and gain experience of future areas of work. The three Culture Days in the second semester, du-ring which you spend time in a European city with students from other degree programmes, are a further highlight of the programme.

As a graduate you are in demand as a specialist in biotechnology companies, the pharma sec-tor, the food industry, biomedicine, chemical, cosmetic and environmental enterprises. In ad-dition to large international companies, many small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and start-ups are making their mark in the mar-ket. Motivated and suitably qualified Bachelor’s graduates can enhance their profile by studying for the Master of Science in Life Sciences with a specialisation in “Pharmaceutical Biotechno-logy”. This creates especially attractive career chances in international companies.

exchange and mobility

In Europe or overseas

Would you like to do part of your studies abroad? The ZHAW provides this valuable opportunity. An exchange semester, a foreign internship, attendance at a summer school, a field trip or a language course all bring many advantages: you get to know a different culture and language as well as another educational and research system, and gain experience for your professional life.

Programme

Exchanges via the EU lifelong learning pro-gramme Erasmus+ are available in all EU and EFTA countries. Erasmus stands for European Action Scheme for the Mobility of Universi-ty Students, and is a widely used exchange programme offering framework conditions for participating institutions, thanks to bilateral agreements. Stays at a host university may last one or two semesters. A Learning Agreement (LA) for student exchanges, or a Training Ag-reement (TA) for placements, govern the reco-gnition of academic achievements. In addition, more than 80 countries from all continents par-ticipate in the IAESTE exchange programme (International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience). Students can gather valuable experience in the short breaks between the semester and the module exams through an IAESTE internship.

Networking is an important aspect of prepa-ring for situations involving different cultures. It is important to talk to people who are fa-miliar with the destination you are interested in to ensure that you are well prepared for your stay and to obtain useful information. In “tandem meetings” at the ZHAW LSFM, two people with different native languages work together to improve their foreign language skills. As part of the Erasmus program, you may be eligible for a grant to cover additional expenses in your destination country. We will be pleased to provide further details. And for more information about international student mobility and helpful tips, see “International” on

www.lsfm.zhaw.ch.

Preparation and support

The ZHAW School of Life Sciences and Facility Management is currently networked with over 70 partner universities in 15 European coun-tries within the framework of the Erasmus programme. The cooperation agreements are constantly being extended: you will find the current list on our website under “Internatio-nal”. In addition, there are agreements with partner universities overseas. If your university of choice is not among our exchange partners, you can apply to any university in the world as a “free mover” student, but in this case, you will be required to pay the tuition fees abroad yourself. To compensate for this expense, your tuition fees at the ZHAW are suspended during your time abroad.

Dates and recognition

Studies at a partner university are possible from

the 3rd semester and last for one or two

se-mesters (3 to 12 months). Please contact your student advisor or the mobility advisor at the International Relations Office (IRO) for informa-tion regarding the date and durainforma-tion of your proposed stay. The European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) allows transparent and verifi-able recognition of studies abroad. The ECTS points you acquire abroad are credited to your studies at the ZHAW.
