Please use this guide to help you plan ahead and use slipways and other launch sites safely

Welcome to a very special place for

boating. The Broads is a member of

the national park family and has over

125 miles (200km) of waterways for

you to explore. The rivers Bure, Ant,

Thurne, Yare, Chet and Waveney

flow through the Broads, many of

the broads (or shallow lakes) are

navigable, and the River Wensum

reaches right into the city of Norwich.

The Broads is ideal for all kinds of

boating - sailing, motor boating,

rowing, canoeing and windsurfing, and

for electric boaters there’s a network of

charging points throughout the area.

It’s also a good place to learn and there

are lots of places giving instruction,

including some with facilities for

disabled people. There are also many

sailing clubs. With beautiful countryside

and rare wildlife like otters and bitterns,

the Broads offers a truly magical

boating experience.

For more details please go to

www.enjoythebroads.com or contact

the Broads information centres.

2) Your boat

Before setting out make sure: • it has an annual

or short visit toll

• it has appropriate insurance • it complies with

Boat Safety Standards (some boats are exempt)

• it complies with

Broads Authority Byelaws • it is watertight

• all equipment and ropes are secure - remove or fasten all free-standing equipment • masts are de-rigged

and secured

• drop keels are raised and locked in the raised position • fuel supplies are off

River maps & launching site maps

3) Your towing vehicle Please consider:

• towing capacity with a braked/ unbraked trailer

• suitability to enter water • engine size/gear ratio

• whether it is correctly wired for trailer operations

4) Your trailer It must be

suitable for weight /size of boat and slipway and it must be roadworthy. Check:

• lights

• tyres and wheels - including jockey wheel and spare wheels

• wheel bearings - they must cool down before entering the water

• brakes - including suitability for use in water

• number plate - including lighting boards

• winch and tie down points to secure the boat

5) Your launch site

There are various designs of slipway and your boat and trailer must be suitable for the slipway you plan to use.

Phone ahead whenever possible to check these details with the manager of the slipway: • depth of water required to float

the boat

• incline of the slipway • ground clearance

• conditions of the slipway surface such as weed growth and grip

7) Ready to launch? Before launching or removing your boat from the water ensure: • children under 16 are not

in the slipway area • the boat is tethered

to the bank

• you are wearing a life-jacket

8) Before setting off on the water check

• your vehicle and trailer are parked considerately • the speed limit for the

waterway you will be using 6) Some questions

before launching

• Do you have the skills to plan and carry out the launch safely? • Do you have complete

information about the slipway? • Are you familiar with the

towing vehicle, trailer, winches and tie down equipment? • Can you launch and recover in

poor weather conditions? • Have you discussed how you

will communicate with others while launching?

• Do you need help?

?

1) Your safety

• If you plan to launch your

boat alone, let someone know

your plans and arrange to

contact them before and after

completing the launch.

• Use appropriate clothing,

footwear and equipment, and

wear a life-jacket.
