Melbourne Royal® is delighted to publish the results of the 2021 Melbourne Royal Wine Awards, and in particular acknowledge and congratulate the medal and trophy winners.

Established in 1884, the Melbourne Royal Wine Awards is one of Australia’s oldest and most respected wine shows recognising and rewarding excellence in Australian winemaking.

Due to COVID-19 and in particular interstate travel restrictions and social distancing measures in place throughout the year in Victoria, we were unsure that the Melbourne Royal Wine Awards would proceed this year. With encouragement and support from our Melbourne Royal Wine Awards Committee, we proudly navigated our way through the challenges to innovate and conduct the judging at Melbourne Showgrounds.

I thank our Committee for their ongoing advice, counsel and support. The commitment, enthusiasm and passion of Chair, Samantha Isherwood, Chair of Judges Matt Harrop along with members Melanie Chester, Emma Brown, Jeni Port and Mark O’Callaghan was instrumental in allowing the Awards to proceed and succeed whilst meeting the challenges posed by COVID-19 restrictions. Melbourne Royal is most grateful for the support, counsel and ongoing involvement of the Committee.

During the week beginning 15 November 2021, twenty-one (21) judges, led by Chair of Judges, Matt Harrop provided their skills and expertise across four days of judging at Melbourne

Showgrounds, including the trophy round. Due to COVID-19 travel restrictions, the judging panel for the 2021 Melbourne Royal Wine Awards were all Victorians and selected based on their exceptional industry knowledge and expertise.

I sincerely thank all our judges for being an integral part of the success of these Awards and providing your time this year. The judges awarded an amazing 135 gold, 254 silver and 569 bronze medals, along with 34 trophies to wineries throughout Australia.

To win a medal or trophy is an amazing

achievement and wonderful recognition for all your hard work and commitment. Medal and trophy winners have earned the Melbourne Royal seal of excellence. They now have opportunities to leverage the success and market their medal- winning products by displaying the Melbourne Royal seal of excellence on their packaging and marketing materials. Melbourne Royal trusts that you will enjoy great value and benefit from your success this year.

In any year, staging the Melbourne Royal Wine Awards is an enormous undertaking, but to have the program proceed in 2021 just weeks after restrictions on gatherings and travel were eased, was an incredible achievement.

The staff at Melbourne Royal worked tirelessly to make sure the show was able to go ahead, and it is important to thank and recognise Damian Nieuwesteeg, Ania Ligas, Oskar Long, Andrew Toms, Sarah Perren and the entire Melbourne Royal team, for ensuring the safe and smooth running of this year’s program.

I would also like to thank the Steward team, led by Su Pettitt, for their dedication, professionalism and good spirits that once again enhanced the experience for all involved. A special mention goes to Bob Bailey for once again making the trek and committing to being present to support this program.

As expected, given the uncertainty that the Awards would proceed, entries were lower than in 2019 when the program was last run. Over four days, 21 judges assembled at Melbourne Showgrounds under stringent COVID-19 safety guidelines to individually critique, score and comment on every entry. For the first time in memory, the entire judging panel were Victorian and no associate judges were present, all due to the COVID-19 restrictions in place at the time.

Overall, just under 6% of entries this year were awarded a Gold Medal, 11% Silver and 25% Bronze.

Some of the highlights from judging were:

Chardonnay: such a strong class. The quality of Chardonnay being grown across the country has never been better. The introduction of state- based trophies for Chardonnay was a complete success, with four brilliant wines taking home trophies.

Pinot Noir: the competition for the James Halliday trophy was fierce. The strength of Tasmania is obvious here, undoubtably we will see many more trophies and medals heading across Bass Straight in future for Pinot Noir.

Shiraz: the most represented variety in this year’s program with 740 entries. In winning the Trevor Mast and Jimmy Watson Memorial trophies, Fallen Giants 2019 Shiraz becomes the first wine to achieve this double since 2014. And it is especially remarkable that Trevor Mast himself owned and made wine from this vineyard. Results like this continue to add to the aura and glow of the Watson and Mast trophies.

This being my final year as Chair of Judges of the Melbourne Royal Wine Awards, it has been a wonderful experience and a deep privilege to oversee judging in 2018, 2019 and 2021.

Winning a Melbourne Royal Wine Awards trophy can only have a positive impact on any wine business and shines a light on your wines that no other Awards can. Melbourne is here for you, the exhibitors, and I trust you will continue to support the Melbourne Royal Wine Awards into the future.
