Texas Panhandle Geriatrics Resource Guide

Local Resources At Your Fingertips

A Product of the South, West and Panhandle Geriatric Education Centers or SWAP-C-GEC

Developed with the Health Care Professional in Mind....

G

Geriatric Health Care in the Texas Panhandle

(3)

The Panhandle Geriatric Resource Guide was a project of the South, West, and Panhandle Consortium of Geriatric Education Center of Texas or (SWAP-C-GEC).

The Panhandle GEC, which is a partner within the Consortium has been in existence since the early 1980s, managed by the Harrington Regional Medical Center and its partners. The Partners have

included such entities as Amarillo College, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine at Amarillo(TTUHSC), the Thomas E. Creek VA Medical Center, and West Texas A&M University.

Geriatric Education Centers are funded by the federal Health

Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) under the auspices of the Bureau of Health Professions. GECs educate and train

healthcare professionals including health sciences faculty, students, and practitioners in the diagnosis, prevention, and

treatment of disease, disability, and other health problems of the aged.

The Panhandle GEC was funded from 2007- 2010 and this will be the final revised version of the guide. We hope that you find the information organized and useful. It will also be available online as an archive on the new 2010-2015 Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Geriatric Education Center webpage at

http://www.ttuhsc.edu/amarillo/som/im/gereduc.aspx.

In early 2010, with the guidance of the Principle Investigator, Dr.

Michelle Saunders of UT San Antonio Health Sciences Center, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center submitted a proposal for its own GEC. In July 2010, TTUHSC was awarded its own GEC.

Thank you to all those involved in this project and thanks to all of you who participated in GEC activities . We hope to serve the community for years to come.

This project was made possible through a federal award from the Department of Health and Human Services, HRSA, BHPr, and DPHS. SWAP-C-GEC.

FAQ CORNER

From the US Department of Health and Human Services, NIH, and National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute at

www.nhibi.nih.gov/health/dci/Diseases/Cad/CAD_WhatIs.html What Is Coronary Artery Disease?

Coronary artery disease (CAD), also called coronary heart disease, is a condition in which plaque (plak) builds up inside the coronary arteries. These arteries supply your heart muscle with oxygen- rich blood. Plaque is made up of fat, cholesterol (ko-LES-ter-ol), calcium, and other substances found in the blood. When plaque builds up in the arteries, the condition is called atherosclerosis (ATH-er-o-skler-O-sis).

Atherosclerosis

Figure A shows a normal artery with normal blood flow. Figure B shows an artery with plaque buildup. Plaque narrows the arteries and reduces blood flow to your heart muscle. It also makes it more likely that blood clots will form in your arteries. Blood clots can partially or completely block blood flow. February 2009

Cataract Defined What is a cataract?

A cataract is a clouding of the lens in the eye that affects vision. Most cataracts are related to aging. Cataracts are very common in older people. By age 80, more than half of all Americans either have a cataract or have

had cataract surgery. A cataract can occur in either or both eyes. It cannot spread from one eye to the other.

What is the lens?

The lens is a clear part of the eye that helps to focus light, or an image, on the retina. The retina is the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye.

In a normal eye, light passes through the transparent lens to the retina. Once it reaches the retina, light is changed into nerve signals that are sent to the brain. The lens must be clear for the retina to receive a sharp image. If the lens is cloudy from a cataract, the image you see will be blurred.
