Linda Gustavsson from Sweden

Alumna of the Erasmus Mundus Double Degree programme Euroculture

Studying with thirteen students from twelve

different countries, different continents, all with

different backgrounds, leads to fascinating

discussions. This mixed group of people

combined with the interdisciplinary nature of

the programme has made my stay here a unique

experience.

The University of Groningen is the only Dutch higher education institution that has both the Diploma Supplement (DS) label and the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) label, awarded by the European Commission and recognized by the Council of Europe

An International Education in Groningen

Gaining an international experience as well as inter-

cultural and language skills will boost your career

prospects. In a work environment that rewards quality

and achievement, we offer balanced study and research

paths, while the University Honours College challenges

students to develop their individual talents.

Bachelor’s Degree Programmes

Within a Major-Minor structure, we offer students choices when compiling study programmes in more than 60 three-year Bachelor’s programmes. The seamless transition encourages many students to continue on to a related Master’s programme after successfully completing their Bachelor’s degree.

Master’s Degree Programmes

All Master’s programmes are high quality and grounded in research, giving students the opportunity to share in the best and latest knowledge. A successful completion results in the qualification MA, MSc or LLM, enabling students to apply for a related PhD programme.

Graduate School Master’s Degree Programmes

For students with research as their special focus, we offer Research Master’s and Top Master’s programmes. These are often incorporated into Graduate Schools, an excellent preparation for a PhD, as well as for a professional or research career. Talented students can write their PhD proposal as part of their Master’s degree.

PhD Programmes

In the four-year PhD programmes, students conduct their own research while the respective Graduate Schools provide a balanced mix of expert supervision and the freedom to pursue your own ideas within relevant research themes. Part of the research can be carried out abroad and many international PhD students are welcomed for short periods as well. After defending your thesis, you will be awarded a PhD degree that is highly regarded internationally. For more information please visit:

An International Outlook: Involved With the World

The University of Groningen has featured as an international community for four centuries. Today, students from at least 115 countries have found their way to the University of Groningen, where English is the language of instruction in more than 90 different degree programmes.

We also maintain long-term partnerships with foreign universities around the world which have comparable high standards, participate in international networks and incorporate international themes into our programmes. This has resulted in many Double Degree/Joint Programmes of which we are very proud. Through cooperation with universities in several developing countries, the University of Groningen contributes to the further development of academic teaching and research worldwide.

Joint Programmes / Double Degree / Joint Degree Choosing to study at the University of Groningen does not mean your experience will be confined to the Netherlands alone. The University has joined forces with strategic international partner universities across Europe and throughout the world. This has resulted in cooperation and exchange in all research disciplines, joint programmes (including the prestigious Erasmus Mundus), joint PhD research, and many other forms of cooperation. Students will receive a degree from both universities, or a Joint Degree. Find more information at:

www.rug.nl/doubledegree Scholarships

The University of Groningen is committed to promoting excellence in academic achievement by offering a substantial number of scholarships for international Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD students, as well as for exchanges, short courses and research stays. For more information, please consult: www.rug.nl/grantfinder

N.B. For those who wish to apply for a scholarship in the Humanities, please note that your programme application should be received two months before the scholarship deadline. (This does not apply to Erasmus Mundus scholarships.)

Important information regarding Numerus Fixus programmes!

In the Netherlands, the number of applications for a particular degree programme is sometimes higher than the number of places available. These degree programmes or institutions have a fixed quota – the ‘Numerus Fixus’. In such cases, prospective students have to participate in a selection procedure that involves drawing lots. If you are applying for a Numerus Fixus degree programme, there are some important deadlines you should be aware of:

In general the final deadline for applying for a Numerus Fixus programme is 15 May 2013: You must apply via Studielink and send a copy of your ID to DUO before this date! However some programmes, for example Medicine, Global Health, require you to apply earlier!

Please check the website of your programme for the deadlines that apply for you.

Students who already have their diploma by 15 May 2013 must make sure a certified copy of the diploma is sent to DUO before

23 June 2013.

If you do not have your diploma yet, DUO will send a ‘late submission’ reply card to the address you entered in Studielink. Make sure that DUO has the reply card before 23 June 2013.

The official results of the selection procedures will be made available around 15 July 2013, provided you submitted all the required documents in time.

These are the most important dates for you to remember.

Depending on your programme, there might be additional deadlines. In addition, you must satisfy the requirements for the degree programme in question and have sufficient knowledge of Dutch if your programme requires it. There is no Dutch language requirement for the English-taught degree programmes at the University of Groningen.

Centralized and Decentralized selection

In the centralized selection procedure your place will be allocated by ballot. Decentralized selection means that the University of Groningen selects a certain percentage of the applicants for the programme, on the basis of certain selection criteria.

For 2013-2014 the following programmes will have a Numerus Fixus:

BSc International Business

both centralized and decentralized selection procedure

BA International Relations and International Organization

100% centralized selection procedure

BSc Medicine, Global Health profile

100% decentralized selection procedure

BSc Psychology

100% decentralized selection procedure

LLB International and European Law

100% decentralized selection procedure

If you would like to contact one of the admissions offices, please send an e-mail to: [email protected]

For more information about the different Numerus Fixus procedures, please check the DUO website:

www.duo.nl/International_visitors

for the online “Information about the lottery for International students with a foreign diploma” brochure, or contact your faculty’s Admissions Office.

When will I hear the decision?

If you have sent in all the required documents on time, the results of the centralized selection procedure will be sent to your correspon-dence address around mid-July. If you have informed us in writing that you are only able to send the required documents after the specified date, you will receive the results of the selection procedure after DUO has received the documents in question. If you have participated in the decentralized selection procedure for a degree programme, the insti-tution in question will send you the results of the selection procedure in writing around 15 June 2013. You will always be sent the ‘Bewijs van Toelating’ (Statement of Admission) by DUO.

Employment

A residence permit for study purposes allows you to work either part-time or seasonally, but not both: that is, either up to ten hours a week, or only in the months June, July and August. Your employer must get a work permit for you. However, in most cases, a reasonable knowledge of Dutch is required. Since your study programme will usually keep you very busy, we would strongly advise you not to work while studying at the University of Groningen.

Groningen and the Netherlands

The historic and picturesque Hanseatic city of Groningen lies

in the north of the Netherlands. It is the economic and cultural

capital of the region: full of restaurants, pubs, art galleries,

theatres, museums and bookshops. Its inner-city markets

and wide range of shops attract a stream of visitors every day.

Groningen: Safe environment, Full of Life

The University has been a visible presence in the city of Groningen for four centuries. The heart of this historic city is home to many of the University’s institutes, departments and offices, which are reminders of a rich academic tradition. The population in Groningen is relatively young: one out of every five residents is a student, and approximately half are younger than thirty-five, which results in a broad choice of reasonably priced sport and recreation facilities, as well as cultural events and festivals. In fact, almost everything, including all University buildings, can be easily reached by the very Dutch mode of transport, the bicycle, which is particularly popular among students.

The Netherlands: Central Location, Rich in Culture

Situated in north-western Europe, the Netherlands is small in size, but its unique location and excellent infrastructure make it an important player in trade, commerce and culture in the European Union. With its extensive international trade links and high standards of education, health care and social equality, the Netherlands finds itself in the heart of Europe. We are one of the founding members of the EU, and other European capitals are only a short distance away. Our mercantile past is still evident today in both historic architecture and the international outlook of the population. Although Dutch is the main language, English is widely spoken. Our society is culturally and ethnically varied and offers a safe environment in which to live.
