Greetings from the South Carolina Osteopathic Medical Society! Welcome to 2021 SCOMS Winter CME Virtual Conference, co-sponsored by the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine - Carolinas.
“The DO Difference: The Holistic & Resilient Approach To Medicine” is designed to help you navigate the changing landscape of medicine amid a global pandemic and the evolution of private practice in the 21st Century. We are grateful to our speakers for pertinent and engaging sessions on the COVID-19 pandemic, the emergence of telemedicine, coding and billing changes, and numerous medical updates for osteopathic physicians.

MEET THE SPEAKERS
Jean M. Elwing, MD, FCCP
Dr. Elwing is currently a Professor of Medicine and the Director of the Pulmonary Hypertension Program in the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine at the College of Medicine at the University of Cincinnati. Her clinical and research focus is pulmonary vascular disease and pulmonary hypertension. Dr. Elwing received her medical degree from Saint Louis University in 1997, completed a combined residency in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at Saint Louis University in 2001, and completed her fellowship training in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Cincinnati.
Jeffrey Cashman, MS, DO
Dr. Cashman serves as the Associate Dean for OMS 4th Year Curriculum and Post-Graduate Affairs and as HRSA Primary Care Training and Enhancement: Training Primary Care Champions-Leadership Development at the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine – Carolinas. He previously served as Discipline Chair of Family Medicine at VCOM-Carolinas. He also serves as an Adjunct Professor at Converse College. Prior to VCOM-Carolinas, Dr. Cashman practiced at Mary Black Family Medical Center. He is the team physician for Spartanburg High School Vikings, is the Past-President of the Spartanburg County Medical Society, and serves as the South Carolina Medical Association Board of Trustees Vice-Speaker of the House of Delegates. Dr. Cashman received his medical degree from Georgia Campus – Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed his Family Medicine Residency at AnMed Health in Anderson, SC. He is a member of the South Carolina Osteopathic Medical Society.
Jerome Aya-Ay, MD
Dr. Aya-Ay is a Board Certified Family Medicine Physician with a special interest in preventative care and lifestyle medicine and he serves as Assistant Professor of Family Medicine, Clinical Track at Edward Via College of
Osteopathic Medicine – Carolinas. He is the co-founder of Palmetto Proactive Healthcare, a direct primary care practice (DPC) in Spartanburg that seeks to unite the patient and physician in a proactive partnership. Palmetto Proactive has five locations in South Carolina. He is actively involved in the local, state and national medical community and he serves on the executive board of
the Spartanburg County Medical Society and the South Carolina Association of Family Physicians. Dr. Aya-Ay received his medical degree from Marshall University School of Medicine as well as his master’s degree in Biomedical Sciences. He completed a Family Medicine Residency at Spartanburg
Regional Medical Center in Spartanburg, SC where he was awarded the Family Medicine Resident of the Year in 2007.
Oshea Escamilla, DO
Dr. Escamilla is a Board Certified Family Medicine Physician who is a Faculty Member in Clinical Medicine and PPC/OMM at the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine – Carolinas. She also practices at Palmetto Proactive Healthcare in the outpatient clinic setting where she utilizes the direct primary care model and focuses on preventative care. Dr. Escamilla received her medical degree from Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine – Carolinas and completed a Family Medicine Residency at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center in Spartanburg, SC.
Natalie Fadel, PsyD
Dr. Fadel is an Associate Professor for Psychiatry and Neuro-Behavioral Sciences and Director of Counseling Services at the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine – Carolinas where she provides counseling services for medical students, is active in mental health and wellness research, and delivers curriculum on such topics as addiction, anxiety, physician-patient communication, and behavioral change. She has clinical experience in schools, community mental health, and residential treatment settings. She obtained her Doctorate and Master’s degrees in Clinical Psychology from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Michigan. Dr. Fadel is a Clinical Psychologist licensed to practice in South Carolina, North Carolina, and Illinois.
Stephanie Walker, MD
Dr. Walker is a Board Certified Family Medicine Physician, a Faculty Member with the Spartanburg Regional Family Medicine Residency Program, and an Assistant Professor with Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine

Dr. Walker received her medical degree from the University of Florida College of Medicine in Gainesville, FL and she completed a Family Medicine Residency at Florida Hospital in Orlando, FL.
Pamela Bailey, DO, MPH
Dr. Bailey is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine and a Board Certified Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases Physician at the Prisma Health Midlands in Columbia, SC. She focuses her research on antimicrobial stewardship and hospital epidemiology, and her research interests include hand hygiene, personal protective equipment and quality improvement. Dr. Bailey received her medical degree from the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine and a Master’s in Public Health from Virginia Commonwealth University. She completed an Internal Medicine Residency at Christiana Care Health System in Newark, DE and completed Fellowships in both clinical infectious diseases and hospital epidemiology/infection control at Virginia Commonwealth University Health System.
Enoch G. “Nick” Ulmer, Jr., MD, CPC
Dr. Ulmer is Chief Medical Officer at Regional HealthPlus and Vice President of Clinic Integration and Medical Director of Case Management at Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System. He is also a Family Medicine Physician at MGC Family Medicine Five Forks in Simpsonville, SC. Dr. Ulmer led a system-wide initiative to develop an internal physician advisor team where “colleagues advise colleagues” on inpatient/observation status determination and other UM-related issues. The success of his innovative model has served as a blueprint for numerous healthcare systems nationally. A love and need for the business of medicine and the importance of coding and documentation led Dr. Ulmer to become a certified professional coder (CPC) in 2002, making him one of only 16 physicians in the U.S. at that time with MD/CPC credentials. He is a national speaker and advisor to healthcare systems and physician
practices who helps to optimize the business of healthcare as it pertains to outpatient and inpatient medicine. Dr. Ulmer received his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina and completed a Family Medicine Residency at Self Memorial Hospital in Greenwood, SC.
JuliSu Dimucci-Ward, PhD, MPH, RDN, CDE, LD
Dr. Dimucci-Ward is an Assistant Professor for Prevention and Public Health at the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine – Carolinas and she works with Family Medicine, Pediatrics and Endocrine practices at Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System. As a researcher, healthcare geneticist, dietitian and certified diabetes educator, she has developed diabetes education programs, worked in corporate wellness, and developed ‘conversation maps’ for medical companies to guide patient education. The focus of her research is epigenetics, which she describes as “where the rubber hits road and where science and clinical medicine meet to serve patients.” Dr. Dimucci-Ward earned her Ph.D. in Health Care Genetics from Clemson University.
Marc Flur, MBA
Mr. Flur is the Senior Consultant of Executive Benefits at Marsh & McLennan Agency - Mid-Atlantic Region. He has more than 25 years of experience advising professionals and business owners with risk management and executive benefits, specializing in disability insurance for the healthcare
industry. In his previous role with BPG, Mr. Flur focused on the medical market, including medical students, residents and fellows, providing risk management advice and strategy.
Jordan Capps
Mr. Capps is the Senior Vice President and Executive Benefits Practice Leader at Marsh & McLennan Agency - Mid-Atlantic Region. He has more than 15 years of experience advising businesses on how to develop and execute their benefits strategy, especially at the executive level. He helps companies from a variety of industries develop benefits programs that attract and retain committed, experienced executive talent.

Jonathan Aun, DO
Dr. (Captain) Jonathan Andrew Aun is Board Certified Internal Medicine Physician in a first-year Cardiology Fellowship at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, MD. As an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS), Dr. Aun teaches both medical students and residents. He was selected as the first Cardiology Fellow in eight years to join the program. In 2020, he was selected as a high performing medical officer by the Air Force Surgeon General. Dr. Aun previously served as Chief of Residents and Staff Internist for the Air Force’s largest Internal Medicine residency program at Keesler Medical Center, Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, MS. As Chief of Residents, he propelled the program toward selection as an American College of Physicians (ACP) Elite residency program status. At Keesler Medical Center, he was selected by his peers as the 2016 Intern of the Year. Dr. Aun received his medical degree from the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine – Carolinas. He is a member of the South Carolina Osteopathic Medical Society.
Stephanie Mayle Scott, DO
Dr. Scott is a First-Year Internal Medicine Resident at the University of South Carolina- Prisma Midlands Program in Columbia, SC. She plans to pursue fellowship training in pulmonary critical care medicine after residency. Dr. Scott is fiercely passionate about protecting and advocating for patients and her fellow physicians. Both she and her husband are osteopathic physicians and they plan to practice in South Carolina upon completion of training. Prior to entering medical school, Dr. Scott was a critical care nurse. She received her medical degree from the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine – Carolinas. She is a member of the South Carolina Osteopathic Medical Society.
Anna Allen Spencer, DO
Dr. Anna Allen Spencer is a First-Year Family Medicine Resident at Prisma Health Midlands – Tuomey Campus. She interrupted her studies at Utah State University to serve an 18-month mission for her church in Mississippi and Washington State that strengthened her desire to pursue medicine.
She graduated magna cum laude from Utah State University with a B.S. in Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Science and then and pursued coursework in psychology, math, and biostatistics at the Harvard Extension School. Dr. Spencer earned her medical degree from Liberty University College of Osteopathic Medicine. She is a member of the South Carolina Osteopathic Medical Society.
Ryan Hakimi, DO, MS, FNCS, NVS
Dr. Hakimi is a Neurointensivist and Director of the Neuro ICU and TCD Services at Prisma Health-Upstate in Greenville, SC. He also serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine (Neurology) at the USC School of Medicine-Greenville. Board Certified in Neurocritical Care, Neurology, Neurosonology (RPNI) and as a Neurovascular Specialist (NVS), Dr. Hakimi was the first fellowship trained DO Neurointensivist and the first DO to be designated Fellow of Neurocritical Care Society. Dr. Hakimi was the first Neurointensivist in the state of Oklahoma and the founding Medical Director of the Oklahoma University Medical Center Neurosciences Intensive Care Unit where he served as an Associate Professor in the Department of Neurology at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. He was also on faculty at the Oklahoma State University Center for Health Sciences. He wrote the post-cardiac arrest hypothermia protocols for Durham County EMS (North Carolina) and later worked with the Oklahoma Office of the Medical Control Board to co-author the state’s post-cardiac arrest treatment protocol which was applied throughout the state. Dr. Hakimi received his medical degree from Michigan State University Osteopathic Medicine and his Master of Science in Radiological Health from the University of Michigan-Rackham Graduate School. He was a United States Department of Energy Applied Health Physics Fellow, completed a Neurology Residency at Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine-Beaumont Hospital (Botsford), and completed a two-year Neurocritical Care and Stroke Fellowship at Duke University Medical Center. Dr. Hakimi is the President-Elect of the South Carolina Osteopathic Medical Society.

Teresa M. Kilgore, DO, FACOI
Dr. Kilgore is the Clinical Chair of Internal Medicine at the Edward Via
College of Osteopathic Medicine – Carolinas and is a Board Certified Internal Medicine Physician. Her extensive career has included working as a Part-Time Hospitalist at Providence Hospital in Columbia, a Physician in the Greenville Hospital System - Emergency Department and Associate Medical Director of the Chest Pain Center, a Hospitalist at St. Francis-Bon Secours, and Chief of Staff at Chesterfield General Hospital. Dr. Kilgore says she enjoys this this point in my career where she is able to balance the challenges of academic medicine, mentoring students with Clinical research, and sharing more than 30 years of practical clinical experience with VCOM-Carolinas medical students. She gives back to the medical profession on a local level with service to the Columbia Free Medical Clinic, on a state level with the South Carolina Osteopathic Medical Society, and on a national level with the AOA, ACOI and the NBOME. Dr. Kilgore received her medical degree from West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine and completed an Internal Medicine Residency at the Kennedy Hospital System in Stratford, NJ. She is a member of the South Carolina Osteopathic Medical Society.
Doralyn Jones, DO
Dr. Jones is the Associate Chair for Family Medicine and Director for Diversity and Inclusion at the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine – Carolinas and she works in Urgent Care at Prisma Health Care System. She is Board Certified in Family Medicine and OMT. She is one of the organizers of VCOM’s “Brave Space Learning Sessions,” which is a judgment-free platform that allow students and faculty to discuss topics such as racial bias, health disparities, privilege, and how our actions have an effect on marginalized populations. Dr. Jones received her medical degree from the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine – Virginia and completed a Family Medicine Residency at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center in Spartanburg, SC. She is a member of the South Carolina Osteopathic Medical Society.
Bethany Powers, DO
Dr. Powers is the OMM Department Chair at the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine – Carolinas and she practices medicine at Palmetto Proactive Healthcare. She is Board Certified in Family Medicine and
Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine and has completed coursework through the Cranial Academy and Sutherland Cranial Teaching Foundation. She also has a special interest in preventative medicine and non-operative orthopedic care. Dr. Powers received her medical degree from Georgia Campus – Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed a Family Medicine Residency at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, where she received the Rubel (Ob-Gyn) and the Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment Awards. She completed Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine Fellowship at Florida Hospital East Orlando in Orlando, FL. She is a member of the South Carolina Osteopathic Medical Society.
Hanna S. Sahhar, MD, FAAP, FACOP
Dr. Sahhar is the Medical Director of Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and the Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System. He holds an academic degree as Professor of Pediatrics at the Medical University of South Carolina AHEC and is a Discipline Chair and Professor of Pediatrics at the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine – Carolinas. Dr. Sahhar received his medical degree from the University of Mosul in Mosul, Iraq. He completed his Pediatric Residency and Pediatric Critical Care Fellowship at Advocate Hope Children’s Hospital in Oak Lawn, IL. He is Board Certified in General Pediatrics and the subspecialty of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine and he holds certification in Pediatric Flexible Fiberoptic Bronchoscopy. An active researcher and investigator for the last 21 years, his focus is always on translational clinical research and projects. From a single case report of discovering an association between a virus and a disease to observational large number of patients studied for many years to evaluate efficacy and safety of treatment or therapy modality. His research categories are: Single Case Reports/rare and unique case presentation (e.g. hMPV and

Pertussis-Like Syndrome); Multiple Case Studies/Descriptive Research (e.g. Silver Russell Syndrome); Retrospective/Chart Review/Quantitative Research (e.g. Diabetic Ketoacidosis); and Prospective/Randomized Control Trials (e.g. Heliox Therapy). Ryan Garbalosa, DO, FACC
Dr. Garbalosa is currently practicing as part of McLeod Cardiology
Associates in Sumter and Manning, SC where he is the Medical Director of the Cardiac Rehabilitation and Echocardiography Departments at McLeod Clarendon Hospital. He is an Associate Professor at the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine’s Sumter rotation site. Dr. Garbalosa serves as the Chief of Medicine at Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital in Sumter, SC and is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiology, Nuclear Medicine, and Echocardiography. In 2020, he was named “Best Cardiologist” by The Sumter Item, is Past President of the Sumter-Clarendon-Lee Tri-County Chapter of the South Carolina Medical Association, and Past Chair of the Young Physicians Section of the South Carolina Medical Association. Dr. Garbalosa graduated from Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine, completed an Internal Medicine Residency at Palmetto General Hospital in Hialeah, FL, and completed a Cardiology Fellowship at the Deborah Heart and Lung Center in Browns Mills ,NJ where he served as chief fellow his final year. He is a member of the South Carolina Osteopathic Medical Society.
Carmen M. Piccolo, III, DO, FACS, FACOS, FSVS,RPVI
Dr. Piccolo is a Vascular Surgeon at McLeod Vascular Associates and McLeod Vascular Associates Vein Center in Florence, SC. He serves as the Medical Director of the Vascular Rehabilitation Program at McLeod Health Care and is an Expert Reviewer for Vascular Surgery for the South Carolina Board of Medical Examiners. Board Certified in General Surgery and Vascular Surgery, Dr. Piccolo is also a Clinical Faculty Member at Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine – Carolinas where he supervises, educates and
evaluates medical students on a vascular surgery rotation. Dr. Piccolo has served in numerous leadership positions at McLeod Regional Medical Center including Bylaws Committee, Medical Staff Secretary, CEO Blue Ribbon Panel, Physician Leadership Roundtable, Perioperative Surgical Home Physician Advisory Group, Credentialing Committee, and Pulmonary Embolism and Deep Venous Thromboembolism Treatment Committees. His current and ongoing research includes Prospective Analysis and Implementation of a Vascular Rehabilitation Program at a Non-University Hospital System and Endovascular Revascularization Prior to Debridement Decreases Limb Loss and Lowers Health Care Costs In Patients with Critical Limb Ischemia. Dr. Piccolo received his medical degree from the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed a General Surgery Residency and a Vascular Surgery Fellowship at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in Philadelphia, PA.
Timothy J. Kowalski, DO, DFACN
Dr. Kowalski is the Vice Provost for Professional and Public Affairs for the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine and Founding Dean of its Carolinas Campus. Having earned his DO degree from the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine, Dr. Kowalski completed a transitional rotating internship, psychiatry residency, and child psychiatry fellowship at Tripler Army Medical Center, in Honolulu, HI. He completed his military commitment as the Division Psychiatrist for the 25th Infantry Division (Light). Prior to VCOM, Dr. Kowalski retired from the South Carolina Department of Mental Health having risen to the position of Director of Professional Services at the William S. Hall Psychiatric Institute in Columbia. A current member of the Board of Trustees of the American Osteopathic Association, Dr. Kowalski previously served on the Board of Deans of the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine as well as the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners as past Chair of the ADA Committee and member of the Blue-Ribbon Panel for enhancing the COMLEX-USA licensing examination. The first DO to serve as President of the South Carolina Board of Medical Examiners, Dr. Kowalski went on to serve as the President of the American Association of Osteopathic Examiners, a member of the Board of Directors of the Federation of State Medical Boards,

and continues over 20 years of service to the SCBME as a member of its Internal Review Committee. Other notable service has included Chairperson of the Advisory Committee to the South Carolina Recovering Professional Program as well as member of the South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services’ GME Taskforce as well as its Medical Education Advisory Committee. Dr. Kowalski is a Past President of the American College of Osteopathic Neurologists and Psychiatrists and a Past President of the South Carolina Osteopathic Medical Society. He is Board Certified in Psychiatry and Child Psychiatry.
Pamela Bailey, DO, MPH
Dr. Bailey is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine and a Board Certified Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases Physician at the Prisma Health Midlands in Columbia. She focuses her research on antimicrobial stewardship and hospital epidemiology, and her research interests include hand hygiene, personal protective
equipment and quality improvement. Dr. Bailey received her medical degree from the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine and a Master’s in Public Health from Virginia Commonwealth University. She completed an Internal Medicine Residency at Christiana Care Health System in Newark, Delaware and completed Fellowships in both clinical infectious diseases and hospital epidemiology/infection control at Virginia Commonwealth University Health System.
