Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company contin-ued the banner year they’ve had in 2012 with yet another increase in sales, average and median prices during the Consignor Preferred session of the two-day Fall Mixed Sale. Florida-breds also did well as the top four sellers were all bred in the Sunshine State.
For the session, 119 horses brought a total of $1,689,900, compared to last year when 84 horses went for a total of $1,112,200 on the first day. That 52.9% in-crease in revenue equates to an average of $14,201 and an increase of 7.3% from the $13,240 average in 2011. Tuesday’s session saw a median price of $10,000, up from $8,500 a year ago and an increase of 17.6%. The buyback percentage was also an im-provement compared to last year when 30% of the horses that passed through the ring did not meet their reserves as only 20.7% of this year’s horses returned home.
Topping the first day of the two-day sale was Hip Number 35, a weanling colt by 2007 Florida Derby (G1) winner Scat Daddy out of the Gilded Time mare Placerita that was consigned by Bobby Jones Equine LLC,

Hip Number 76 brought the fourth highest price of $45,000 and was another from the con-signment of Kaizen Sales (Richard Kent, inset), Agent XIV. By 2008 Kentucky Derby pre-sented by Yum Brands and Preakness winner Big Brown, the bay filly is out of the unraced Capote mare, Trudy Capote. Machmer Hall signed the ticket on the Florida-bred filly.
Number 13 was not an un-lucky number for Hip Number 13 Tuesday, a dark bay or brown colt that sold for $42,000. Consigned by Pelican State Thoroughbreds, Agent V the weanling by Roman Ruler out of the Deputy Minister mare Madison’s Quest is a half-brother to Request For Parole, an earner of $1.3 million and winner of the Grade 1 United Nations Stakes in 2004 and the Grade 3 Mac Diarmida Handicap that same year. Foundation Farms was the buyer.

The top selling broodmare in foal to a Florida-based sire was Hip Number 132, Diva Dyna, from the consignment of Oak Vale Farm. By Grand Slam and out of the Dynaformer mare Minimalist, the 8-year-old mare brought a $35,000 final bid from Bryan Hilliard and is be-lieved to be in foal to Big Drama, himself a Florida-bred and the 2010 Champion Sprinter and winner of the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Sprint who stands at Stonewall Farm Ocala.

It’s going well, it’s what you have, you know. The better horses seem to be selling well which is kind of the same old story at an auction. It’s about what I expected.Bryan Rice
I think the market is starting to feel the effects of supply and demand. I think it’s an upbeat feeling and I hope it continues to show itself into the upcoming 2-year-old season.

Well it’s very early [in the sale] but so far it seems to be going good. Nice individuals seem to be selling good, but we have a long way to go to re-ally tell.Terry Gabriel

I think it’s very strong. We’ve had a ton of people looking at horses and the prices are strong overall. We’ve just sold a couple of weanlings so far, but we got what we wanted for them and maybe even a little in excess.Tom McCrocklin
Buyer
I think it’s strong for the right kind of weanlings and difficult on mares and I think it was expected to be that way. We can’t seem to get that enthusiasm for mares just yet. But if you have a nice weanling, people seem to be willing to speculate.BROCK SHERIDAN PHOT

I think it is getting to be like most sales; the good individuals are bringing good money and others are hoping to get some kind of bid. The attendance is good; which is a plus. I wasn’t sure how many people were going to be up here today. But it is a nice crowd.

The weanling market has been very strong and the broodmare market has seen a significant change from a couple of years ago where mares that you were hard pressed to get rid of are bringing $10,000-$12,000 and I think that is a very encourag-ing sign. Supply and demand seems to have finally kicked in a little bit.
