Dear Physicians and Health Care Professionals,

It is an honor and privilege to serve as the Chairman of OHSU

Casey Eye Institute. In my role, I have the opportunity to partner

with many of you in caring for patients with complex eye

diseases, as well as lead Casey through an era of unprecedented

change in health care policy and advances in clinical care.

Casey was built to bring the latest technologies and

treatments to our region, and we are pleased that we can

work side by side with you to offer these to your patients.

Remarkable advances in imaging and informatics are being

pioneered by Casey Faculty. Today we are increasing the

numbers of clinical trials in many of our specialties and we are excited to be moving

into Phase 1 gene therapy trials for retinal degenerative diseases. Oregonians are

benefitting by being some of the first in the nation to access these new therapies.

In anticipation of the predicted shortage of ophthalmologists, we are increasing the

numbers of residents in training and increasing the numbers of fellowship trained

subspecialists in cornea, retina, neuro-ophthalmology, oculo-plastics and pediatric

ophthalmology. As part of the only academic health center in Oregon, Casey is

working hard to increase the number of trainees to make sure that our citizens are

well served for decades to come.

Demand for our services has grown in recent years. When we have seen our

wait times for new patients become unacceptable, we have taken some of our

subspecialists “on the road” to serve you in your communities. We hear that the

improved convenience for your patients is appreciated and will continue to make

efforts to serve you throughout the region.

I hope that you will always feel free to contact me if you have thoughts on how we

might better meet the needs of our community. We are grateful for your partnership

and input.

Warm Regards,

David J. Wilson, MD

Professor and Thiele-Petti Chair, Department of Ophthalmology
