Teacher Development Modules for Teachers of English

ILS English have designed an innovative range of independent half day professional development modules

for Teachers of English. Our Teacher Training Team have many years experience in the UK and overseas

delivering courses to schools, universities and private organisations. Clients can choose from any of the half

day modules below and courses can vary from 3 days to 4 weeks.

Teaching Methodology Modules

A History of EFL Methodology

Module objectives: To provide an overview of teaching approaches and methodologies and how these have changed and developed over the years. Also, to look at the principles behind these approaches which we apply to our teaching today.

Multiple Intelligences

Module objectives: To outline Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences and to look at ways of incorporating this into the language classroom by adapting course book materials.

Learner Styles and Strategies

Module objectives: To focus on ways to determine students’ preferred learning styles and help them develop strategies to become more effective language learners, both in and outside the classroom.

Learner Training

Module objectives: To focus teachers on raising students’ awareness of how they learn and developing their abilities to become more autonomous and effective language learners, both in and outside the classroom.

Motivating Learners

Module objective: To look at different types of motivation and explore ways to increase students’ motivation to learn English, both in and outside the classroom.

Helping Learners improve their Spelling

Module objectives: To look at different strategies and techniques to help learners improve their spelling skills and as a result their writing skills.

Current Approaches and Trends in ELT

Module objectives: To explore current teaching approaches and methods and how these are reflected in our classroom practice. Also, to look at the principles behind the tasks and activities teachers use in their classroom teaching.

Communicative Language Teaching

Module objectives: To look at the principles behind a Communicative Approach to language teaching and explore the procedures, techniques and materials we use in the classroom to promote communicative language learning.

Task-Based Language Learning

Module objectives: To focus teachers on the principles of task-based language learning and look at a variety of tasks and materials which can be used in the classroom to develop students’ language fluency and confidence when performing tasks in English.

Student-centred Learning

Module objectives: To look at various ways in which teachers can make their lessons more student-centred, in order to promote learner autonomy and encourage learners to take more responsibility for their learning, both inside and outside the classroom.

Teaching Skills Modules

Classroom Management

Module objectives: To develop awareness of classroom management techniques and interaction and to focus on the various roles of the teacher at different stages of a lesson.

Lesson Planning

Module objectives: To encourage teachers to reflect on their current lesson planning procedures and how effective these are in practice, and to explore alternative procedures.

Presenting Language

Module objectives: To look at ways of introducing new language structures through student-centred approaches, taking the focus off the teacher. Also, to examine how to focus on eliciting language structures through text-based materials

Developing Lexis

Module objectives: To analyse what it is to ‘know a word’ and to extend ways of teaching and reviewing lexis in the language classroom in a student-centred way. Also, to look at ways of recording lexis to aid learners’ recall.

Teaching Functional Language

Module objectives: To look at various ways of presenting and practising functional language in the classroom. Also, to focus on the importance of stress and intonation when teaching this type of language, in order to develop learners’ spoken fluency and pronunciation.

Using Phonology in the Classroom

Module objectives: To develop a range of techniques and activities for integrating pronunciation in the ELT classroom, in order to develop learners’ spoken fluency and pronunciation, as well as their ability to understand native English speakers.

Communicative Grammar Practice Activities

Module objectives: To share and extend ideas for teaching grammar in a fun, communicative and meaningful way, to help develop learners’ language skills and motivation.

Innovative Warmers, Coolers & Fillers

Module objectives: To extend teachers’ resource bank of activities which can be used as warmers, fillers and coolers during lessons, to vary the pace of lessons and maintain students’ interest and motivation.

Developing Reading & Listening Skills

Module objectives: To look at different ways to develop students’ reading and listening skills, to evaluate the effectiveness of different tasks and extend teachers’ resource bank of teaching ideas and materials.

Developing Writing Skills

Module objectives: To share and develop ideas for developing students’ writing skills and look at different approaches to teaching writing, including process writing. Also, to look at a variety of communicative writing activities.

Developing Students’ Speaking Skills

Module objectives: To focus on a variety of techniques and procedures to develop students’ speaking skills and build their confidence in speaking English. Also, to focus on ways to develop students’ pronunciation to aid comprehension and comprehensibility.

Error Analysis & Correction

Module objectives: To look at the type of errors learners make in the language classroom and why they make them and to explore different techniques for both spoken and written error correction.

Testing & Assessment

Module objectives: To focus on different ways of testing and assessing students’ language skills in the classroom, both formally and informally, and look at different types of tests which can be used.

Syllabus & Course Design

Module objectives: To develop awareness of different types of syllabus and models or principles of course design, and to design a mini course for a specific group of learners, considering different options and activities.

Language Systems Modules

Analysing Language for Teaching Purposes

Module objectives: To reflect on current practice in analysing language for teaching purposes and to provide a model procedure which teachers can apply when preparing language presentations. Also, to consider difficulties learners have with different language items and how to help them overcome these difficulties.

Lexis – Phrasal Verbs & Idioms

Module objectives: To explore the area of idiomatic language and phrasal verbs in English and look at a variety of ways to present and practise this lexis in the classroom, in a meaningful and communicative way.

Teaching Conditionals

Module objectives: To analyse the complex area of conditionals in English and look at a variety of materials and tasks which can be used to present and practise these in the language classroom in a communicative way, at different language levels.

Teaching the Perfect Aspect

Module objectives: To focus on the difference between time, tense and aspect, and explore different ways to present and practise perfect tenses in a fun, communicative way.

Different meanings of modal verbs

Module objectives: To analyse the complex area of ‘modality’, the difficulties learners have with this grammatical area, and look at ways teachers can help them overcome these difficulties. Also, to look at practical ideas for practising this language area in the classroom, at different levels.

Ways of expressing the Future

Module objectives: To analyse the different ways of expressing future time, the difficulties learners have with this area, and look at ways teachers can help them overcome these difficulties. Also, to extend teachers’ resource bank of materials and tasks for practising this language area in the classroom at different levels.

Narrative tenses

Module objectives: To analyse past narrative tenses and consider the difficulties learners have with this language area. Also, to expand teachers’ resource bank of teaching materials and tasks to practise narrative tenses in the classroom.

Phonology: Sounds

Module objectives: To review the phonemic alphabet and look at how this can be used to help learners improve their comprehension and comprehensibility in English. Also, to look at practical ways to integrate work on English phonemes in the language classroom.

Phonology: Word & Sentence Stress

Module objectives: To look at word and sentence stress and how these components of phonology can help learners understand and be understood by native speakers of English. Also, to look at practical ways to integrate work on stress in the language classroom.

Phonology: Intonation

Module objectives: To help teachers raise learners’ awareness of intonation patterns in English and how these convey different meanings, and to look at various practice activities which can be used to help learners recognize and be able to produce these patterns, to aid comprehension and comprehensibility in English.

Phonology: Features of Connected Speech

Module objectives: To focus on features of connected speech in English phonology, and how an awareness of these features can help learners understand spoken English more easily and produce more natural English pronunciation. Also, to look at practical ways to integrate work on this aspect of phonology in the language classroom.

Module objectives: To raise awareness of the need to develop materials and look at ways of adapting coursebook materials, as well as designing new materials appropriate to students’ interests and needs.

Evaluating & Adapting Coursebooks

Module objectives: To evaluate various coursebooks and coursebook activities, to extend ways of exploiting coursebooks and look further at materials development

Using Authentic Materials

Module objectives: To look at different types of authentic material and how these can be exploited in the classroom, to develop learners’ confidence and language skills, particularly in reading.

Using Games in the classroom

Module objectives: To look at different ways of using games in the language classroom, to practise a variety of language points in a fun and communicative way and motivate learners, appealing to different learning styles.

Using Music, Songs & Video

Module objectives: To look at various ways of using music, songs and video in the language classroom, to practise a variety of language points and motivate learners, appealing to different learning styles.

Using Visual Aids

Module objectives: To extend ideas on ways to use visual aids in the language classroom, both to present and practise a variety of language points and to develop students’ language skills, as well as to encourage students’ creativity in the classroom.

Using Short Stories & Creative Writing

Module objectives: To develop a bank of materials for classroom use to incorporate literature and creative writing tasks, and to develop students’ reading and writing skills through literary materials.

Teaching without Materials

Module objectives: To look at a variety of practical ideas and activities for teaching with limited or no resources, focusing in particular on the people in the room (students and teacher) and communication between them as the basis for an interesting and successful lesson.

Additional Modules

British Life & Culture

Module objectives: To look at some texts and websites dedicated to British Life and Culture, and to consider ways of developing lesson plans to incorporate a cultural focus.

Using Technology in the Classroom

Module objectives: To explore different ways of using technology in the classroom, in particular activities and tasks using the internet both in the classroom and for self-study, as well as for research skills and project work.

Teaching Young Learners

Module objectives: To develop awareness of teaching approaches for young learners

and outline a template lesson plan for young learner classes. Also, to develop a bank of effective materials for YL teachers.

Teaching Teenagers

Module objectives: To develop awareness of teaching approaches for teenage learners and explore ways to increase and maintain learner motivation. Also, to develop a bank of effective teaching materials and activities to engage the teenage learner.

Teaching Business English (ESP)

Module objectives: To explore the differences between teaching General English and Business or ESP classes and extend teachers’ resource bank of activities and techniques which can be used when teaching English for Specific Purposes.

Teaching Exam Classes (EAP)

Module objectives: To provide an overview of different types of exam classes and explore different resources, materials and techniques which teachers can use to help their learners develop the skills needed to pass these.

Drama in the English Classroom

Module objectives: To explore ways of using drama in the language classroom to improve language skills, confidence and motivation.

Using Project Work with Younger Learners

Module objectives: To look at ways of setting up project work in the language classroom and to present ideas for possible projects for teachers to adapt to their own learners.

Carrying out Classroom Research

Module objectives: To look at the benefits of classroom research as a means to continuing professional development, and to explore different types of action research projects teachers could carry out in different teaching contexts.
