PRINCIPLES OF COMMUNITY HEALTH

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course provides an overview of public health issues as they relate to community health promotion and disease prevention. Theories and models relevant to community health programming as well as the connections between local, state, and national public health initiatives are presented. Emphasis is placed on acquisition of pertinent public health data to enable practical, applied, community-wide planning and cooperation among varied stakeholders. RATIONALE

This course sets the foundation for the other courses in the Health Promotion specialization for the MPH degree. A proper understanding of the role of the community within the context of public health provides the framework for evaluating health disparities and developing programs to solve the critical health issues.

After reading the Syllabus and Student Expectations, the student will complete the related checklist found in Module/Week 1.

C. Discussion Board Forums (3)

The student will complete 3 Discussion Board Forums. Each discussion will consist of a thread and at least (minimum) 3 replies. The instructor is looking for substantial, thoughtful, and critical discussions. Threads are submitted by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Thursday, and replies are submitted by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Sunday of the same module/week.

D. Article Reviews (4)

The student will identify research articles from the peer reviewed literature addressing a community health problem from Healthy People 2020 objectives or The Community Guide. The student will then write a 2–3 page summary of the content of the article. Additional sources may be needed to validate the main points of the article under review. The reviews must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Sunday of the assigned module/week.

E. Research Paper

The student will explore a community related health issue identified in the Healthy People 2020 objectives. The goal of this study is to go beyond the basic framework on the Healthy People 2020 internet sources and thoroughly research printed professional literature. The student will write a 15–20 page research paper that must include a thorough discussion of the science behind the issue as well as the theory, political and policy challenges, and resources for meeting the

objective.

A working bibliography of 10 sources must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Sunday of Module/Week 2.

C. Late Assignment Policy

If the student is unable to complete an assignment on time, then he or she must contact the instructor immediately by email.

Assignments that are submitted after the due date without prior approval from the instructor will receive the following deductions:

1. Late assignments submitted within one week of the due date will receive a 10% deduction.

2. Assignments submitted more than one week late will receive a 20% deduction.

3. Assignments submitted two weeks late or after the final date of the class will not be accepted.

4. Late Discussion Board threads or replies will not be accepted. Special circumstances (e.g. death in the family, personal health issues) will be reviewed by the instructor on a case-by-case basis.
