The MSMS Program is both a point of pride for MIT Sloan and a program
of importance and visibility. The relationships with our international partner
and cooperating schools are strengthened and given focus through MSMS.
Further, students in the program have a unique opportunity to maximize their
array of academic experiences across two different business schools, and
develop a uniquely strong set of professional relationships as alumni of two
schools in different countries.

With no required courses, the MSMS Program structure
empowers each student to create a specific educational plan
that is unique to his or her areas of interest. Candidates
come to MIT Sloan with a special concentration in a particular
area of management studies and have the opportunity to study
under the counsel of a professor within the following academic
areas of MIT Sloan: Behavioral and Policy Sciences; Economics,
Finance and Accounting; and Management Science. The
student’s curriculum and master’s thesis is reviewed by his or
her faculty advisor.
Over the years, MIT Sloan has made collaborative arrangements with schools of management around the world. The MSMS Program is a product of those relationships and is yet another way to deepen our ties while fostering a rich learning community.

Coming from Morocco and studying in France, I was not used to the way American schools use their networks and was even reluctant to use MIT’s. With the help of the Career Development Office, I learnt how to optimize this technique and enjoyed contacting people from my HEC and MIT networks. This strategy, in conjunction with the MIT brand I benefitted from, helped me with my job search in France. Indeed, I spent the January break interviewing for jobs and came back to MIT in February with four job offers.

My focus in joining the MSMS program was to learn about energy. During the year I was able to connect with the leading researchers on energy topics, join a study group with mostly PhD students at MIT, and take energy focused classes at MIT Sloan. This inter-disciplinary connection at MIT and the opportunity to cross-register at Harvard Kennedy School of Government allowed me to also gain insights to the engineering and policy aspects of energy. The time at MIT was a spectacular learning experience and the specialized knowledge will help me in my career.

As a sponsored student it was important for me to come back to my company with refined knowledge. Academically, I chose to write a strategy focused thesis with Professor Stewart Myers and took classes that helped me assess risk management in Korean life insurance companies. Outside of class, I networked with my classmates and profes-sors at MIT, kept up with my Mandarin, and studied for my CFA Level 3 test.

Career Development
MIT Sloan’s Career Development Office (CDO) plays a vital
role in helping students connect with the world’s leading firms.
The CDO offers a number of programs and resources designed
to help students develop the industry knowledge and skills
necessary to compete in today’s competitive job market.
With 1,000+ students, MIT Sloan is a vibrant and active community. The diversity of the MIT Sloan community
is showcased in the elective courses, where MSMS, MBA, Sloan Fellows, Master of Finance, students from
other MIT departments, and even Harvard students engage in classroom discussions. In addition to your
regular course lectures, everyday there are numerous opportunities to network through activities, presentations,
distinguished speaker series, and informal gatherings hosted by the 60+ MIT Sloan student clubs and other
organizations. These activities involve interactions with executives (often MIT alumni) who share their experiences
and time. After you graduate, you will join and contribute to the 120,000+ MIT and 20,000+ MIT Sloan
alumni networks.
The MSMS Program is a unique adventure. It takes a special kind of student to come to MIT Sloan for nine months, write a master’s thesis with world-class faculty experts, and undertake challenging academic coursework with students from around the world. Our international partner and cooperating schools prepare their students with a solid foundation to manage the rigors of MIT and dive deeper into a particular specialty. We also welcome excellent students from other overseas institutions as long as they have an MBA or comparable degree and have demonstrated excellence in their academic work and careers. The combination of an overseas MBA and an MSMS degree makes our students uniquely qualified to handle the global marketplace, whether they are interested in entrepreneurship, finance, international management, technological innovation, or any of the other areas we excel in at MIT.

I was fortunate to have Professor Glen Urban, former dean of MIT Sloan, as my MSMS thesis advisor. My thesis titled “Online Advertisement Morphing: Empirical and Strategic Implications” leveraged data analytics and cognitive science to optimize a leading telecom service provider’s advertising expense and at the same time increased click-throughs for publishing websites. Working on this thesis
helped me make the necessary connections to find a job in the U.S. and helped me gain knowledge that I now share with my clients. Now, as an alum I find that I still rely on the MIT connections and knowledge personally and professionally.
