Course Overview and Objectives

The main objective of this course is to facilitate the student’s transition from theories and principles in the classroom to developing and managing a law practice. The course will introduce important management and planning tools, with an aim towards developing the acumen required to successfully develop a small independent law practice. The coursework is designed to examine the core competencies required to succeed in this segment of the legal profession, as well as the issues and challenges facing new lawyers and solo practitioners. Students will discover that the practical application of these tools is essential to lawyers who will manage their own law practices. Ethical considerations and malpractice traps in the context of practice are also featured throughout the course. In-class exercises, written assignments and readings are designed to reinforce the subject matter and support an open and collaborative learning environment. Throughout the semester, students will work each week to compose a detailed business plan for the development of an independent law practice.

A secondary objective of this course is to develop and hone logical reasoning and critical thinking skills, organization skills and presentation skills involving the studied material.

Students are expected to come to class prepared, with all reading and written assignments complete, and be prepared to ask questions and discuss class material. Attendance is required. Coursework Requirements

Final Business Plan: 50 percent

Attendance: Since the class only meets once a week, showing up is paramount. One absence during the semester will be excused. Each absence after that will lower your grade two points.

2 Text and References

Required Text: Solo by Choice – How to Be the Lawyer You Always Wanted to Be, Decision Books, Carolyn Elefant (2011-12)

Another book that you might find helpful, though it is not required for this class, is How to Start and Build a Law Practice – Platinum Fifth Edition, Jay Foonberg (2004).

Academic Integrity

Written work must be your own, unless cited properly. As a member of a learning, academic community, all work must be done in good faith. Academic dishonesty of any kind will not be tolerated.

The written assignments are not due until after we discuss that topic in class. For example, the Executive Summary referenced in week one is to be worked on after our first class.

Written assignment: Write a one-page Executive Summary. This is the first page of your business plan. It should articulate the mission and objectives of your new firm. Reading assignment: Elefant: Chapter 1 through Chapter 3

(LOMAP is a great resource, and this booklet walks you through a business plan. Each week’s reading assignments will not reference this booklet, but you should consult this booklet throughout the semester and as you are working on your business plan.)
