Understanding Society
Rankings
Tilburg University contributes to solving social issues. We achieve this mainly by developing and transferring knowledge and bringing together people from various disciplines and organizations. Therefore we have invited companies, organizations, government, and citizens to work together with us to develop new insights and innovative solutions for society. We create this innovation by conducting research, by learning, and by understanding. Understanding Society.
Tilburg University was established in 1927 and has since contributed to research and education in the social sciences, including economics, law, psychology, sociology and humanities. We educate our students to assume responsibility in our society by contributing to sustainable solutions. We do so with our high-level academic education at a green and international campus.
Every year, various national and international rankings are published in which universities are compared. In the disciplines in which we are active, we score highly in these rankings.

Academic research is our basis. Our research is aimed to push the scientific boundaries by developing new knowledge. It is focused on subjects and issues that are relevant to society and can drive innovation. Tilburg University has several interdisciplinary research centers in which scholars from different disciplines enhance each other’s work. Some of these research centers are supported with additional funding. This allows them to develop as academic Centers of Excellence and continue to be leading in (international) research. The international Victimology Institute (Intervict), the Network for Studies on Pensions, Aging and Retirement (Netspar), the Tilburg Law and Economics Center (TILEC), the Center of Research on Psychology in Somatic diseases (CoRPS) and the Tilburg Center for Cognition and Communication (TiCC) currently have this status.

Education
Our education is research-based and research-driven. This means that our teachers use the newest academic insights regarding education and involve students in setting up and conducting research. As a result, our students are taught to work independently and develop critical and analytical thinking, skills that are crucial to future leaders. We prepare our students for an international social career. We stimulate our students to connect to society, encourage their sense of responsibility, and promote an international orientation. Our green campus is a wonderful environment for a community in which students and scholars can learn and work in close proximity.
All our programs have been accredited by the Accreditation Organisation of the Netherlands and Flanders (NVAO). The NVAO has also awarded Tilburg University the Education Quality Assurance Label. The NVAO panel concluded that Tilburg University is home to a vibrant and stimulating quality culture and has a relevant and widely supported vision on educational quality.

Campus
Tilburg University consists of six Schools, five Service departments, four Graduate Schools, and many, usually multidisciplinary, research institutes.
Tias, the Business School of Tilburg University and Eindhoven University of Technology, offers a broad and flexible portfolio of internationally accredited management programs. Tias’ slogan, ‘Never stop Asking’, is reflected in its programs, which are based on lea-ding management research. They meet the specific educational needs of both individu-als and organizations in the dynamic world of business.
Our Research Masters and PhD programs are administered by the Graduate Schools. To achieve excellent quality, research and education are closely linked. This has resulted in an academic environment within which Research Master students, PhD students, and researchers meet and stimulate each other.
Tilburg University has a green campus near the city center, on the edge of a park-like forest. Its sixteen buildings are all within easy walking distance of each other and of Tilburg Universiteit railway station. With its excellent facilities and up-to-date technical infrastructure, our campus offers all the conditions for high-quality research and education.
The world is facing major changes due to political, economic and social turbulence. These changes will have a fundamental impact not only on the distribution of scarce resources such as energy, food and water, but also on the globalizing labor market, diminishing the prospects of those who are already at a disadvantage. Tilburg University contributes to a sustainable society. This is expressed in scientific research and education as well as housing, policy and management. To this end, it has also drawn up a Corporate Social Responsibility plan framing measures from the installation of a recharging station for electric cars to sustainable purchasing in accordance with CSR principles.
