Blavat Family Scholarship

One $500 award is being offered based on need, with preference to applicants with minor children living at home and/or who are pursuing careers in geriatric nursing.

Application must include a one page essay that answers the following:

‘Things I never knew about my parents/grandparents’ or for those whose parents/grandparents are no longer living, essay may be ‘Things I’d want my children to know about me.’

This scholarship was created in memory of Helen and Walter Blavat by their daughters. It was only following their parents’ deaths that they became aware of the sacrifices their parents made that enabled Helen to attend nursing school. The Blavats were longtime Shoreline residents. Walter was fully disabled and by his early 50s was unable to continue working. Helen began working as a nurse’s aide in various nursing homes to help support the family. Liking the work, Helen enrolled in the SCC Nursing Program. She continued working in geriatric nursing throughout her career, well into her 60s.

Elizabeth was a pediatric nurse practitioner at Odessa Brown clinic for over 25 years before her retirement. Due to Elizabeth many contributions she has made in her practice and throughout the district and state nurses association, she was inducted into the WSNA Nurses Hall of Fame in 2000. Ms. Thomas passed away February 9, 2011. Scholarship awards will be based on need, merit and commitment to serving diverse communities and recipient's potential in his/her nursing career.

She entered nursing school while she was in her early 40s and her graduation fulfilled a life-long dream to become a nurse and a service to others. Most of her nursing career was spent at the VA Hospital on Beacon Hill and it is there that she served many of the veterans from the Viet Nam War. She dutifully cared for all of her patients, but on occasion would bring one of her six children to visit some of the young vets, mostly to show appreciation for their service. Vivian was truly a quiet trailblazer for independence. She was strong and courageous and was absolutely dedicated to the nursing profession
