Information Bulletin for Nursing Students
Math Placement Testing
Please read this bulletin carefully
Now that you have been accepted to the BN (Collaborative) Program there is an
academic matter that must be satisfied soon.
In Year 2 you will take a course NURS 2004 Pharmacology and Nutritional Therapies.
An acceptable level of mathematical proficiency is required as a prerequisite to ensure
accuracy in calculating medication dosages in this course. Therefore, one of the
pre-requisites that must be satisfied before you take NURS 2004 (Fall of Year 2) is the
completion of three credits in university level Math, Math N102
or
achievement of a
score of
at least 50
on the Mathematics Placement Test (MPT). If you do not achieve
this score, you must successfully complete Math 102N before taking NURS 2004
Pharmacology and Nutritional Therapies.
What is the MPT?
The MPT is used to determine knowledge of mathematical skills required for entry into
various math courses as well as being a prerequisite for NURS 2004 Pharmacology and
Nutritional Therapies in the Bachelor of Nursing (Collaborative) Program. The MPT
consists of 100 multiple-choice questions, broken down into five questions each, in 20
topics/areas. These topics range across all types of mathematical topics, from
elementary topics to more advanced topics that are currently taught in the provincial
school system. The use of a calculator is not permitted on the MPT. Further
information about the MPT including sample questions can be found at the Mathematics
Department home page
http://www.math.mun.ca/
[click Mathematics Placement Test
(MPT)].
What do I do if I have already done the Math Skills Inventory at the College of the
North Atlantic or have university level Math credits?
If you have completed the Math Skills Inventory at the College of the North Atlantic, and
have received a passing grade, you may be exempt from the MPT. In order to be
exempt you must have an official letter from the instructor at the College of the North
Atlantic sent to the Mathematics department at MUN with the grade, the year and
semester completed and request to have it added to your transcript as a substitute for
the MPT.
If you have already taken 3 credit hours in university mathematics (excluding Statistics
2500) and you achieved at least a 50% in that course you
do not
have to take the MPT.
Proof of completion of the Math course is required. If you have completed the Math
course at another university or college, a transfer credit is required.
When must I take the MPT?
You can take the MPT only once.
MUNSON and CNS students: MPT testing is offered at the beginning of each
semester. N102 is offered at MUN campus during the Fall, Winter, and Spring
semesters. Ensure that you have enough time to obtain the testing and complete
remedial work if necessary.
WRSON students:. To ensure sufficient time to develop the required
mathematical proficiency, should remedial work be necessary, you must complete the
MPT at the start of the Fall Semester in which you are admitted to the nursing program.
N102 is offered in the Spring semester only.
How do I arrange to take the MPT?
Any student who is (conditionally) accepted to the university can register for the MPT in
the same way you register for any other course. If you check the Course Offerings
posted on the web by the Office of the Registrar you will see the available times to write
the MPT (listed as MATH 1MPT). Please take careful note of the date, time and
location of the test as you register. Please note that out-of-province students who did
not write the MPT as a university admission requirement, must write it as a pre-requisite
for NURS 2004.
You can register to take the MPT by visiting the Memorial University Math Department
website at
http://www.math.mun.ca/
please do this as soon as you receive this package.
For students accepted at the Corner Brook site who need to take the MPT, you must
take the MPT that is scheduled for the Tuesday, September 8
th;2:30 – 4:30 p.m. (
the
day before the first day of classes, in the fall semester at Grenfell Campus
)
. Students at
the Corner Brook site who do not meet the pass mark of 50% on the MPT will be able to
complete the course during the Intercession at Grenfell Campus. Further information will
be provided to students during orientation.
How much does the MPT cost?
The MPT is free.
How do I find out the results of the MPT?
All students may also find their MPT score at
http://www.math.mun.ca/
. At the
Mathematics Department home page click Mathematics Placement Test (MPT). There
will be a list of results at the end of the page. Choose the date on which you wrote the
test. In addition, for those students who write the MPT at Grenfell Campus in
September, the grades are also sent to the School of Nursing.
What if the student does not make the pass mark on the MPT?
Students are expected to achieve a score of at least 50 on the MPT to satisfy the
pre-requisite requirement.
If you do not meet the required score on the MPT you must upgrade your mathematical
skills through the Mathematics Skills Program (Mathematics 102N). Mathematics 102N
is a non-credit course that is offered in Fall,
Winter and Spring semesters on St. John’s
Campus; it is offered during intercession at Grenfell Campus. It has a workload and
class time equivalent to a three credit hour course and it carries the same tuition fees as
a three credit hour course. You must successfully complete Math 102N before you
can register for NURS 2004 in Fall semester of year two of the BN (Collaborative)
Program.
Students are strongly encouraged to take Math 102N during the fall semester at St.
John’s sites and intercession at Corner Brook site. However, any student who needs to
take Math 102N as a sixth course in a particular semester should consult the Associate
Dean/Director of your site as soon as you obtain your MPT results.
How much work is involved with Mathematics102N?
The workload is similar to any three credit hour course. The expectation is that each
student taking Mathematics 102N will attend class three times a week (50 minutes each
session) and complete assigned homework.
What happens if I don’t successfully complete Math 102N prior to Year 2 of the
BN (Collaborative) Program?
Failure to successfully complete Math 102N [if needed] prior to N2004 will result in a full
year delay in your progression through the BN (Collaborative) Program.

Students should become familiar with the General University Academic Regulations (Undergraduate) and the Nursing Program Academic Standards and Promotions and other regulations. These are available on line at www.mun.ca. As well, the CNS
Student Handbook contains critical information that you will need to refer to on a regular basis. This Handbook will be provided to you in September. It is also available on line at www.centrefornursingstudies.ca.
2. Pre-Clinical Placement Requirements
As indicated in a separate memo, these documents are to be returned by August 24th. Students who do not submit their documents, as outlined in the Pre-Clinical Placement Booklet, will not be permitted to attend clinical learning experiences. This could interfere with subsequent progress in the program.
3 Student Identification
Year 1 students will be required to purchase two items of identification:
a) Photo ID: Photo ID’s will be taken during orientation on Tuesday, September 8th. They are to be purchased at the Centre at a cost of $5 per student. This ID is required for security purposes and must be worn at all times. Payment must be made during Registration.

4. CNS Parking Permits for the 2015-2016 Academic Year
A limited number of parking permits will be made available to students in each
year/program. A parking permit does not guarantee a parking place. These permits will be valid only for the student parking lot. The cost will be $10 and the permit will be valid from September 2015 – August 2016.
A permit application is included in this package. You will need to provide the vehicle model, color and license plate number before a permit can be issued. Bring this application with you to registration on September 8th. A random draw will occur in September for available permits.
Students are not permitted to park in any areas at the L.A. Miller Centre Site other than the Student Parking Lot. If you park in Staff Parking, 9E, 9C or Visitors’ Parking areas, you will be ticketed by Security.
The Student Parking Lot is situated to the far right of the DVA Pavilion, L.A. Miller Centre.
5. Payment for Photo ID, CNS Nametag CNS Lanyard and Parking Permit
Time has been allotted during the 08:30 – 09:15 Registration session on Tuesday, September 8th for payment of these fees. See separate attachment for more information.
6. Nursing Society Fees
All students are members of the Nursing Society. A $5 Nursing Society Fee will be collected on Tuesday, September 8th from 08:30-09:15. Please note that this fee is different from the Student Union, Canadian Federation of Students’ and the Canadian Nursing Student Association fees which are included with your tuition costs. All students are required to pay this fee.
7. Textbooks
See attached book list or visit the MUN Bookstore Web Site www.bookstore.mun.ca. 8. Lockers
Students will need a locker at Southcott Hall as excess personal items are not permitted in the classrooms during testing and seminar/lab rooms during instruction. Additionally, they cannot be left unattended outside the classrooms, lab rooms, and conference rooms as they create a safety and fire hazard. There is no cost for a locker. Information related to requesting a locker will be provided during orientation.

9. Travel and Vacation Plans (Important Dates, DO NOT book any trips during these times)
a) Students are reminded that final exams for the 2015-2016 academic year are scheduled as follows:
Fall 2015 Examinations begin on Wednesday, December 9th and end on Friday, December 18th.
Supplementary Exams for Fall courses will be held on January 5 or 6, 2016. Classes for the Winter 2016 Semester begin on Thursday, January 7, 2016 b) Year 1 students should note that the three-week Extended Clinical Practice Course
(NURS 1520) is completed after the Winter 2016 Exam schedule. This course runs from April 18 - May 8, 2016.
STUDENTS SHOULD NOT MAKE TRAVEL OR VACATION PLANS THAT CONFLICT WITH THESE PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS.
10. Transportation
All nursing courses and Biochemistry will be taken at Southcott Hall, 100 Forest Road in the East End of St. John’s. Non-nursing courses and Nursing 1002 labs will be held on the MUN Campus. Your Fall Semester Schedule has been planned to keep your commuting time between Southcott Hall and the MUN Campus to a minimum.
As students in a nursing program, you also need to be aware of the fact that there will be costs associated with clinical placement. Clinical placements within St. John’s, Mount Pearl and the surrounding areas will mean travel costs for students.
As you progress in the program, out of town clinical placements will result in both travel and living expenses.
11. Lab Coat for Sciences Courses
Students taking Nursing 1002 and science courses with labs will be required to purchase a full-length lab coat to be worn during labs. Clinical lab coats/warm up jackets are not to be used for this purpose.
12. Clinical Dress Code
Students are required to wear a standard clinical uniform consisting of navy blue pants and a white top. Please see “Clinical Dress Code” document included in this package. The uniform is not required for Fall Semester. It is required for Winter Semester.
