PROGRAMME IN HEALTHCARE

PREAMBLE

Health is a fundamental human right of all communities, family groups or people and individuals irrespective of their race, religion, sex, values and beliefs. The effective practice of medicine calls for the efficient coordinated efforts of a team of medical personnel involved in prevention, diagnosis and cure of disease. Among members of the team is the professional Healthcare Assistant, who contributes to the maintenance of health and management of diseases by (interdisciplinary) diagnostic investigations.

The Healthcare programme will be essentially a student centered activity whose body of knowledge will be grounded in all the basic sciences. These sciences are dynamic entities which therefore entreat the Healthcare Assistant to be abreast with the technology advancement of the time. It is envisaged that the Healthcare programme will produce individuals who would perform the appropriate diagnostic procedures.

Evidence –base medicine makes the laboratory technician an indispensable entity of the healthcare delivery system.

RATIONALE FOR THE PROGRAMME

As modern medicine advances, the horizon of the Healthcare expands and the body of knowledge pertinent to the different disciplines increases. This fact, coupled with the reliance of clinicians on laboratory testing to confirm and enhance their diagnostic skills place a great and increasing responsibility on the Healthcare professional.

The programme seeks to provide Healthcare Assistant:

1. With a high degree of accuracy, selective ability and judgment and at the same time offer creative responses working within the ethical and legal framework.

2. Who will be able to perform basic laboratory investigations, communicate results to the requesting health personnel in a timely manner and manage resources under minimum supervision.

1.0 AIMS AND GENERAL OBJECTIVES:

To train highly qualified Healthcare Assistants who will be able to: 1. Perform tests with a high level of reliability

2. Ensure adherence to quality control systems 3. Ensure total quality management

4. Develop skills that will ensure effective communication with colleagues and patients.

5. Apply knowledge and principles to perform functions with minimum supervision 2.0 NAME OF PROGRAMME

The programme shall be referred to as Certificate in Healthcare under the Department of Healthcare Assistant, the Academic Board of Christian HealthCare Training School and it shall be a certificate programme that lasts for 24 months.

3.0 STRUCTURE OF THE PROGRAMME

The Certificate in Healthcare programme has the foundation to enable students have a stronger subject content background of the theories involved in assays as stipulated in the syllabus. It focuses on four core disciplines namely; Basic Care, Anatomy and Pharmacology, Basic Geriatric Care and Basic Pharmacology, Medical & Surgical Conditions, Basic Midwifery, Nursing Practice. In addition to the core disciplines, students shall be introduced to the study of Nursing Assistance and Instrumentation, Introduction to Computer, and Communication and Study Skills.

During the 24 months training period, a lot of practical bench work in addition to theoretical aspects shall be undertaken both at Christian HealthCare Training School Practical Laboratory Premises and selected Hospital Facilities in and around the Central Region. 4.0 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Certificate – Healthcare Technology 4.1 SSSCE, WASSCE or Equivalent

Core subjects and minimum grades: Credits (WASSCE A1-E8/ SSSCE A-E) in three (3) subjects, English, Mathematics and Integrated Science.

Elective subjects and minimum grades: At least passes in three (3) elective subjects (SSSCE: A-E, WASSCE: A1-E8.)

4.2Mature Student Age: 25 – 35

SSSCE, WASSCE or Equivalent

Passes in three (3) core subjects (English, Mathematics, Integrated Science) and three (3) elective subjects. Must have at least two years working experience in medical laboratory and a pass in an Entrance Examination

5.0 DURATION OF PROGRAMME

The duration of the programme shall be two years (24 Months) - Four Semesters YEAR ONE

6.0 REQUIREMENT FOR AWARD OF CERTIFICATE

To qualify for the award of Certificate as Health care a candidate should:

a. Have a total of at least 76 credit hours

b. Pass all required courses earning a Cumulative Weighted Average CWA) count of 40 or more.

c. Satisfy all other requirements of the Department of Healthcare Technology, Christian HealthCare Training School Academic Board, including professional ethics and universal moral code.

d. Undertake 12 months of End of Programme Internship 7.0 EVALUATION OF COURSE WORK

Assessment of students’ performance in course will be done through a combination of mid-semester assessment and end of mid-semester examination.

The grading will be as comprise: Mid – Semester assessment = 30% End of Semester Examination = 70%

The mid – semester assessment comprises quizzes, essays, assignments and short test.

Practical should take 60% and theory 40% for final examination at both mid–semester and end of semester examinations.
