Westfield State University actively encourages its students to participate in a variety of service-learning initiatives such as internships, community service and practica. These valuable experiential education initiatives are offered by the University in unison with many partners that are local, regional and national. Through employer partnerships and community relations, faculty and staff help students identify sites based on their current and future career goals. Career Connections, the University’s web-based posting system, serves as a centralized resource for faculty, staff and students to identify potential place-ments for internships, community service and service-learning opportunities. During the 2011-2012 academic calendar year over 650 Westfield State University students engaged in internships and other field experience opportunities leading to over 100,000 hours of service. These students assisted and supported our schools, businesses and non-profit organizations through internships, practica, cooperative education and community service programs. Outreach to new employers, organizations and internship sites and placements are continually being developed to meet the diverse need of our students’ career interests.
Working alongside experienced professionals, students had the opportunity to apply classroom learning while gaining invaluable practical experience related to their interests and field of study. These field experiences provide opportunities for networking, establishing valuable contacts and exploring potential career opportunities. Also, students develop confidence, learn to interact professionally, identify personal and professional strengths and explore and test career interests. Each one of these experiences allows our students to grow professionally.
Employers benefit from these collaborations and they have the opportunity to meet and work with bright, enthusiastic and motivated students. Interns are eager to take on special projects and can offer new insights and experiences. Employers often extend offers of employment to interns since they have first-hand knowledge of their skills and abilities. According to the National Association for Colleges and Employers (NACE) over 60% percent nationally of paid interns received job offers for the Class of 2012. This collaboration strengthens and enhances the University and the community.
The following list highlights organizations hosting Westfield State University students during the 2011-2012 academic calendar year.
Sincerely, Junior Delgado

In my internship I work on different town projects that are going to come into the town. The aspect that I work on is the plan-ning portion, what happens before the project is approved. What we see in our towns came from a long line of decisions, votes and revisions and I work in the process. I enjoy everything about my internship, especially meeting new clients and hearing people’s ideas and dreams for what they want to build.
They ask for our help in accomplishing those goals and I love being a part of the process and knowing that I helped to build something amazing.

As a cardiac rehabilitation intern, I work with patients who have experienced a cardiac event. I use exercise as a treatment to promote a healthier lifestyle, and in doing so, improve the patients’ overall quality of life.
My internship experience has been a rewarding one. While I am helping patients improve their health, they are bringing both joy and purpose to my life. I had not considered cardiac rehabilitation as a career path before this opportunity; however, I now believe this may be the field I pursue in the future. I’m grateful to the staff and patients at Noble Hospital for all they have given me on both a professional and personal level.
