The Hindu student never expects or demandsanything
in the nature of"proof"
of the teachers statements of
principle
or meth-od;in fact, he would
regard
it as an insult tothe teacher to ask for the same.
Consequently,
he does not look for, or ask,
specific
instances orillustrations in the nature of scientific evidence
or
proof
of theprinciples
taught.
He may askfor more information, but
solely
for the purposeof
bringing
out somepoint
which he has notgrasped;
but he avoids as apestilence
any ques-tionseeming
to indicate argument, doubt ofwhat is

taught
him, or of the nature of ademand for
proof

of course,not from any real doubt or
suspicion
of the verac-ityor
ability
of theteacher,

becausethe Western mind
expects
toquestion,
and bequestioned,
in this way in the process ofteaching

learning.
Consequently,
in this series oflessons,
I havesought
to follow the Western method rather thanthe Hindu. So far as is
possible,
I have avoidedthe flat
positive
statement ofprinciples
and meth-ods,and have
sought
to prove eachstep

new,and must be
proved
and attestedaccordingly.

So far asthe illustrations and cases, the
quotations

West-ernand

to the student.But,

principles

of Hinduthought

investigation,
and that he who would dis-covertheir roots must

around the tree of theWisdom of the

which has stood the stormsand winds of thousands of years. But the

rest in its shade and shelter.

The student of occultism
usually
isquite
famil-iarwith the crass individual who assumes the
cheap
skeptical
attitude toward occult matters, which attitude he expresses in his would-be"smart" remark that he "believes
only
in what his sensesperceive."
He seems to think that hischeap
wit hasfinally disposed
of the matter, theimplication
being
that the occultist is a cred-ulous,"easy"
person who believes in the exist-enceof
things
contrary to the evidence of thesenses.
While the
opinion
or views of persons of thisclass are, of course, beneath the serious concern of any true student of occultism, nevertheless the mental attitude of such persons are
worthy
of ourpassing
consideration, inasmuch as it serves togive
us anobject
lessonregarding
the childlikeattitude of the average so-called
"practical"
per-sonsregarding
the matter of the evidence of thesenses.
These so-called
practical
persons have muchto
say
regarding
their senses.They

of "the evidence of my senses."They

"soundcommon sense"; and often
they
make the strangeboast that
they
have "horse sense,"seeming
toconsider this a great
possession.
Alas, for theusually
foundquite
credulousregarding
mattersbeyond
theireveryday
field of work andthought,
and accept without
question
the most ridiculousteachings
anddogmas
reaching
them from thevoice of some claimed
authority,
whilethey
sneerat some advanced
teaching
which their minds areincapable
ofcomprehending.
Anything
whichseems unusual to them is deemed
"flighty,"
andlacking
inappeal
to their muchprized
"horsesense."
But,
it is not my intention tospend
time indiscussing
theseinsignificant
half-penny
intel-lects.I have
merely
alluded to them in order tobring
to your mind the fact that to many personsthe idea of "sense* and that of "senses" is very
closely
allied.They
consider allknowledge
andwisdom as
"sense;"
and all such sense asbeing
derived
directly
from theirordinary
five senses.They
ignore
almostcompletely
the intuitionalphases
of themind,
and are unaware of many ofthe
higher
processes ofreasoning.
Such persons accept as undoubted
anything
that their senses report to them.
They
considerit
heresy
toquestion
a report of the senses. Oneof their favorite remarks is that "it almost makes
me doubt my senses."
They
fail toperceive
thattheir senses, at the
best,
are veryimperfect
in-struments,and that the mind is
constantly
em-ployedin
correcting
the mistaken report of theordinary
five senses.Not to
speak
of the commonphenomenon
ofcolor-blindness,
in which one color seems to beTHE ASTRAL SENSES 15
may,
by suggestion,
be made toimagine
that wesmell or taste certain
things
which do notexist,
and
hypnotic
subjects
may be caused to seethings
that have no existence save in theimag-
ination
of the person. The familiar
experiment
of the personcrossing
his first twofingers,
andplacing
them on a smallobject,
such as a pea orthe
top
of alead-pencil,
shows us how "mixed"the sense of
feeling
becomes at times. The manyfamiliar instances of
optical
delusions show usthat even our
sharp
eyes may deceive us "every
conjuror
knows how easy it is to deceive the eyeby suggestion
and false movements.Perhaps
the most familiarexample
of mis-takensense-reports
is that of the movement ofthe earth. The senses of every person report to
him that the earth is a
fixed,
immovablebody,
and that the sun, moon,
planets,
and stars movearound the earth every
twenty-four
hours. It isonly
when one accepts thereports
of the reason-ingfaculties,
that he knows that the earth notonly
whirls around on its axis everytwenty-four
hours,
but that it circles around the sun everythree hundred and
sixty-fivedays;
and that eventhe sun
itself,
carrying
with it the earth and theother
planets, really
movesalong
in space, mov-ingtoward or around some unknown
point
fardistant from it. If there is any one
particular
report of the senses which would seem to be be-yond
doubt or
question,
itcertainly
would be thiselementary
sense report of the fixedness of theearth beneath our
feet,
and the movements of theheavenly
bodies around it" andyet
we know thatthe case are
totally
different.Again,
howfew-persons
really
realize that the eyeperceives
things
up-side-down,
and that the mindonly
gradually
acquires
the trick ofadjusting
the im-pression?I am not
trying
to make any of you doubt thereport of his or her five senses. That would be
most
foolish,
for all of us must needsdepend
uponthese five senses in our
everyday
affairs,
andwould soon come to
grief
were we toneglect
their reports.
Instead,
I amtrying
toacquaint
you with the real nature of these five senses, that
you may realize what
they
are not, as well aswhat
they
are; and also that you may realizethat there is no
absurdity
inbelieving
that thereare more channels of information open to the
ego, or soul of the person, than these much used
five senses. When you once
get
a correct scien-tificconception
of the real nature of the five ordi-narysenses, you will be able to
intelligently
grasp the nature of thehigher
psychic
faculties or senses, and thus be better fitted to use them.So,
let us take a few moments time in order toget
this fundamentalknowledge
well fixed in ourminds.
What are the five senses, anyway. Your first
answer will be:
"Feeling,
seeing, hearing,
tast-ing,smelling."
But that ismerely
a recital ofthe different forms of
sensing.
What is a"sense,"
when
you
get
right
down to it?Well,
you willfind that the
dictionary
tells us that a sense is a"facult)',possessed
by
animals,
ofperceiving
ex-ternalpoorly
developed.
Theelementary
life form"feels" the touch of its
food,
or of otherobjects
which may touch it. The
plants
also have some-thingakin to this sense, which in some cases,
like that of the Sensitive
Plant,
forinstance,
isquite
welldeveloped.
Long
before the sense ofsight,
or the sensitiveness tolight appeared
inanimal-life,
we find evidences of taste, and some-thinglike
rudimentary
hearing
or sensitivenessto sounds. Smell
gradually
developed
from thesense of taste, with which even now it is
closely
connected. In some forms of lower animal lifethe
sense of smell is much more
highly
developed
than in mankind.
Hearing
evolved in due timefrom the
rudimentary
feeling
of vibrations.Sight,
thehighest
of the senses, camelast,
andwas an evolution of the
elementary
sensitivenessto
light.
But,
you see, all these senses are but modifica-tionsof the
original
sense offeeling
or touch.The eye records the touch or
feeling
of thelight-
waves
which strike upon it. The ear records the
touch or
feeling
of the sound-waves or vibrationsof the
air,
which reach it. Thetongue
and otherseats of taste record the chemical touch of the
particles
offood,
or othersubstances,
coming
incontact with the taste-buds. The nose records
the chemical touch of the
gases or fine
particles
of material which touch its mucous membrane.
The sensory-nerves record the presence of outer
objects
coming
in contact with the nerve ends inTHE ASTRAL SENSES 19
that all of these senses
merely
record the contactor "touch" of outside
objects.
But the sense organs,
themselves,
do not dothe
knowing
of the presence of theobjects. They
are but
pieces
of delicateapparatus
serving
torecord or to receive
primary
impressions
fromoutside. Wonderful as
they
are,they
have theircounterparts
in the works of man, as for instance :the camera, or artificial
eye; the
phonograph,
orartificial ear; the delicate chemical
apparatus,
orartificial taster and
smeller;
thetelegraph,
orartificial nerves. Not
only
this,
but there are al-waysto be found nerve
telegraph
wires convey-ingthe messages of the eye, the ear, the nose, the
tongue,
to the brain "telling
thesomething
in the brain of what has been felt at the other end
of the line. Sever the nerves
leading
to the eye,and
though
the eye will continue toregister
per-fectly,stillno message will reach the brain. And
render the brain
unconscious,
and no messagewill reach it from the nerves
connecting
witheye, ear, nose,
tongue,
or surface of thebody.
There is much more to the
receiving
of sensemessages than you would think at
first,
you see.Now all this means that the ego, or
soul,
ormind,
if youprefer
the term " is the real Knowerwho becomes aware of the outside world
by
means of the messages of the senses. Cut off
from these messages the mind would be almost a
blank,
so far as outsideobjects
are concerned.Every
one of the senses so cut off would mean adiminishing
orcutting-off
of apart
of the worldto the listtends to widen and increase the world
of the ego. We do not realize
this,
as a rule. In-stead,we are in the habit of
thinking
that theworld consists of
just
so manythings
andfacts,
and that we know every
possible
one of them.This is the
reasoning
of a child. Think how verymuch smaller than the world of the average per-son
is the world of the person born
blind,
or theperson born deaf !
Likewise,
think how very muchgreater
andwider,
and more wonderful thisworld of ours would seem were each of us to find
ourselves
suddenly
endowed with a new sense!How much more we would
perceive.
How muchmore we would feel. How much more we would
know. How much more we would have to talk
about.
Why,
we arereally
in about the sameposi-
tion
as the poor
girl,
bornblind,
who said that shethought
that the color of scarlet must be some-thinglike the sound of a trumpet. Poor
thing,
she could form no
conception
ofcolor,
never hav-ingseen a ray of
light
" she could think andspeak
only
in the terms oftouch,
sound,
taste and smell.Had she also been
deaf,
she would have beenrobbed of a still greater share of her world.
Think over these
things
a little.Suppose,
on the contrary, that we had a newsense which would enable us to sense the waves
of
electricity.
In that case we would be able to"feel" what was
going
on at anotherplace
"per-haps
on the other side of the
world,
ormaybe,
onone of the other
planets.
Or,
suppose that wehad an X

sense " we could then seethrough

vision were
improved
by
the addition of a tele-scopicadjustment,
we could see what isgoing
on in
Mars,
and could send and receive communi-cationswith those
living
there.Or,
if with amicroscopic
adjustment,
we could see all thesecrets of a
drop
of water "maybe
it is well thatwe cannot do this. On the other
hand,
if we hada
well-developed
telepathic
sense, we would beaware of the
thought-waves
of others to such an extent that there would be no secrets left hidden to anyone " wouldn't that alter life and humanintercourse a
great
deal? Thesethings
wouldreally
b,e
no more wonderful than is the evolutionof the senses we have. We can do some of these
things
by
apparatus
designed
by
the brain ofman " and man
really
is but an imitator andadaptor
of Nature.Perhaps,
on some otherworld or
planet
there may bebeings
having
seven, nine or fifteen senses, instead of the poor
little five known to us. Who knows!
But it is not necessary to exercise the
imagina-
tion
in the direction of
picturing
beings
on otherplanets
endowed with more senses than have thepeople
of earth.While,
as the occultteachings
positively
state, there arebeings
on otherplanets
whose senses are as much
higher
than theearth-man's as the latter's are
higher
than those of theoyster,
still we do not have to go so far to findinstances of the
possession
of muchhigher
andmore active faculties than those
employed
by
theordinary
man. We have but to consider thehigher psychical
faculties of man,right
here andhim. When
you reach a scientific
understanding
of these
things,
you will see that there
really
isnothing
at allsupernatural
about much of thegreat
body
of wonderfulexperiences
of men in alltimes which the "horse sense" man
sneeringly
dismisses as
"queer"
and"contrary
to sense."You will see that these
experiences
arequite
asnatural as are those in which the
ordinary
fivesenses are
employed
"though
they
are
super-physical.
There is thegreatest
difference be-tweensupernatural
andsuper-physical,
you mustrealize.
All occultists know that man has other senses
than the
ordinary
five,
although
but few menhave
developed
themsufficiently
well to use themeffectively.
Thesesuper-physical
senses areknown to the occultists as "the astral senses."
The term
"Astral,"
used sofrequently
by
all oc-cultists,ancient and
modern,
is derived from theGreek word
"astra,"
meaning
"star." It is usedto indicate those
planes
ofbeing
immediately
above the
physical
plane.
The astral senses arereally
thecounterparts
of thephysical
senses ofman, and are connected with the astral
body
ofthe person
just
as thephysical
senses are con-nectedwith the
physical body.
The office ofthese astral senses is to enable the person to re-ceive
impressions
on the astralplane, just
as hisphysical
senses enable him to receiveimpressions
on the
physical plane.
On thephysical plane
themind of man receives
only
the senseimpressions
of the
physical
organs of sense; but when theTHE ASTRAL SENSES 23
requires
astral senses in order to receive the im-pressionsof that
plane,
andthese,
as we shall see,are present.
Each one of the
physical
senses of man has itsastral
counterpart.
Thus manhas,
inlatency,
the power of
seeing, feeling,
tasting, smelling,
and
hearing,
on the astralplane, by
means of hisfive astral senses. More than
this,
the best oc-cultistsknow that man
really
has sevenphysical
senses instead of but
five,
though
these two addi-tional senses are not unfolded in the case of the average person(though
occultists who havereached a certain
stage
are able to use themeffectively).
Even these two extraphysical
senses have their
counterparts
on the astralplane.
Persons who have
developed
the use of theirastral senses are able to receive the sense im-pressions
of the astral
plane
just
asclearly
asthey
receive those of thephysical
plane by
meansof the
physical
senses. Forinstance,
the personis thus able to
perceive things
occurring
on theastral
plane;
to read the Akashic Records of thepast; to
perceive
things
that arehappening
inother parts of the world ; to see past
happenings
as
well;
and in cases ofpeculiar development,
tocatch
glimpses
of thefuture,
though
this is farrarer than the other forms of astral
sight.
Again,
by
means ofclairaudience,
the personmay hear the
things
of the astralworld,
past aswell as
present,
and in rare cases, the future.The
explanation
is the same in each case "merely
in-stead of on the
physical
plane.
In the same way,the astral senses of
smelling,
tasting,
andfeeling
operate.
Butthough
we have occasional in-stancesof astral
feeling,
in certainphases
ofpsychic phenomena,
we havepractically
no mani-festationof astral
smelling
ortasting,
although
the astral senses are there
ready
for use. It isonly
in instances oftravelling
in the astralbody
that the last two mentioned astral senses,
viz.,
smell and taste, are manifested.
The
phenomena
oftelepathy,
orthought
trans-ference,occurs on both the
physical
and the men-talplane.
On thephysical plane
it is more or lessspontaneous
and erratic inmanifestation;
whileon the astral
plane
it is asclear,
reliable and re-sponsiveto demand as is astral
sight,
etc.The
ordinary
person has but occasional flashesof astral
sensing,
and as a rule is not able to ex-periencethe
phenomenon
at will. The trainedoccultist,
on thecontrary,
is able to shift fromone set of senses to the
other,
by
asimple
actor effort of
will,
whenever he may wish to do so.Advanced occultists are often able to function on
both
physical
and astralplanes
at the sametime,
though
they
do not often desire to do so. Tovision
astrally,
the trained occultistmerely
shiftshis sensory mechanism from
physical
toastral,
or vice versa,just
as thetypewriter
operatorshifts from the small-letter
type
to thecapitals,
by simply
touching
theshift-key
of his machine.Many
persons suppose that it is necessary totravel on the astral
plane,
in the astralbody,
inchometry
ismerely
one form of astralseeing;
just
as iscrystal gazing.
In what is known as
Telekinesis,
or movementat a
distance,
there is found theemployment
ofboth astral
sensing,
and astral will action accom-paniedin many cases
by
actualprojection
of aportion
of the substance of the astralbody.
In the case of
Clairvoyance,
we have an in-stanceof the
simplest
form of astralseeing,
with-outthe
necessity
of the "associatedobject"
ofpsychometry,
or the focalpoint
of thecrystal
incrystal
gazing.
This is true not
only
of theordinary
form ofclairvoyance,
in which the occultist seesastrally
the
happenings
anddoings
at some distantpoint,
at the moment of
observation;
it is also true ofwhat is known as past
clairvoyance,
or astral see-ingof
past
events; and in theseeing
of futureevents, as in
prophetic
vision,
etc. These are allsimply
different forms of one and the samething.
Surely,
some of you may say, "Thesethings
are
supernatural,
far above the realm of naturallaw " and yet this man would have us believe
otherwise."
Softly, softly,
dearreader,
do notjump
at conclusions soreadily.
What do youknow about the limits of natural law and
phe-
nomena?
What
right
have you to assert that allbeyond
yourcustomary
range of senseexperi-
ence
is outside of Nature? Do you not realize
that you are
attempting
toplace
a limit uponNature,
which inreality
is illimitable?The man of a
generation
back of thepresent

ing that the marvels of wireless telegraphy were
supernatural, had he been told of the possibility of their manifestation. Going back a little fur-ther,
the father of that man would have said the same thing regarding the telephone, had anyone been so bold as to have prophesied it. Going back
still another generation, imagine the opinion of some of the old men of that time regarding the
telegraph. And yet these things are simply the
discovery and application of certain of Nature's wonderful
powers and forces.
Is it any more unreasonable to suppose that
Nature has still a mine of undiscovered treasure
in the mind and constitution of man, as well as in
inorganic nature? No, friends, these things are as natural as the physical senses, and not a whit more of a miracle. It is only that we are accus-tomed
to one, and not to the other, that makes
the astral senses seem more wonderful than the
physical. Nature's workings are all wonderful
"
none more so than the other. All are beyond our
absolute conception, when we get down to their
TELEPATHY vs. CLAIRVOYANCE.
In this work I shall use the term
"clairvoy-
ance"
in its broad sense of "astral
perception,"
asdistinguished
fromperception
by
means of thephysical
senses. As weproceed,
you will see thegeneral
andspecial
meanings
of the term, sothere is no
necessity
for aspecial
definition orillustration of the term at this time.
By
"telepathy,"
I mean thesending
and receiv-ingof
thought
messages, and mental and emo-tionalstates,
consciously
orunconsciously,
by
means of what may be called "the sixth sense" ofthe
physical
plane.
There is,of course, a form ofthought
transference on the astralplane,
but thisI include under the
general
term ofclairvoyance,
for reasons which will be
explained
later on.You will remember that in the
preceding
chap-
ter
I told you that in addition to the five
ordinary
physical
senses of man there were also two otherphysical
sensescomparatively
undeveloped
inthe average person. These two extra
physical
senses are,
respectively,
(1)
the sense of thepresence of other
living things;
and(2)
the tele-pathicsense. As I also told you, these two extra
physical
senses have their astral counterparts.They
also have certainphysical
organs whichare not
generally
recognized
by
physiologists
orTELEPATHY vs. CLAIRVOYANCE 29
occultists. I shall now consider the first of the
two above-mentioned extra
physical
senses, inorder to clear the way for our consideration of
the
question
of the distinction betweenordinary
telepathy
and that form ofclairvoyance
which isits astral
counterpart.
There is in every human
being
a sense whichis not
generally
recognized
assuch,
although
nearly
every person has had more or lessexperi-
ence
regarding
itsworkings.
I refer to the senseof the presence of other
living things,
separate
andapart
from theoperation
of any of the fiveordinary
physical
senses. I ask you to under-standthat I am not
claiming
that this is ahigher
sense than the other
physical
senses, or that ithas come to man in a
high
state of evolution. Onthe
contrary,
this sense came toliving things
farback in the scale of evolution. It is
possessed by
the
higher
forms of the loweranimals,
such asthe
horse,
dog,
and themajority
of the wildbeasts.
Savage
and barbaric men have it morehighly
developed
than it is in the case of thecivilized man. In
fact,
thisphysical
sense maybe termed almost
vestigal
in civilized man, be-causehe has not
actively
used it for many genera-tions.For that matter, the
physical
sense ofsmell is also deficient in man, and for the same
reason, whereas in the case of the lower
animals,
and savage man, the sense of smell is very keen.
I mention this for fear of
misunderstanding.
Inmy little
book,
"The AstralWorld,"
I have said :"All occultists know that man
really
has sevenaddi-tional two senses are not
sufficientlydeveloped
for use in the average person
(though
the occult-istgenerally
unfolds them intouse)."
Somehave taken this to mean that the occultist de-velops
these two extra
physical
senses,just
as hedoes certain
higher
psychic
or astral faculties.But this is wrong. The
occultist,
in such case,merely
re-awakens these two senses which havebeen almost lost to the race.
By
use and exer-cisehe then
develops
them to a wonderful pro-ficiency,for use on the
physical
plane.
Now,
this sense of the presence of otherliving
beings
is very welldeveloped
in the lower ani-mals,particularly
in those whosesafety
depends
upon the
knowledge
of the presence of their nat-uralenemies. As
might
beexpected,
the wild ani-malshave it more
highly
developed
than do thedomesticated animals. But even among the lat-ter,
we find instances of this sense
being
in activeuse " in the case of
dogs,
horses,
geese, etc.,especially.
Who of us is not familiar with thestrange actions of the
dog,
or thehorse,
whenthe animal senses the unseen and unheard pres-ence
of some person or animal?
Very
often wewould scold or
punish
the animal for itspeculiar
actions,
simply
because we are not able to seewhat is
worrying
it. How often does thedog
start
suddenly,
and bristle up itshair,
whennothing
is insight,
or withinhearing
distance.How often does the horse grow
"skittish,"
oreven
panicky,
when there isnothing
withinsight
or
