Our next meeting of the Tracy Fly Fishers will be on Wednesday, February 15.

FLY LINES &

FISH TALES

A message from the president.

First things first, I would like to thank every member for allowing me to be the 2012 president. I look forward to another classic Tracy Fly Fisher’s fun packed year.

With that being said, just take a look at the great board of directors. With all the up and coming fish outs, camping, new classes, and the Family BBQ day, I know that TFF will have some type of event that everyone can enjoy this year. These club members have really stepped it up, so please join in and have some fun.

What about the fishing? Well this is the time of year that I like to check out and clean all my gear. Replacing new tippet and checking all my knots and or retying them. I also like to go through all my fly boxes and discard bit and or worn flies.

The Fly Fishing Show is coming to Pleasanton

February - 24, 25, and 26. If you can make the show it is a good bet that you will learn something new as it is packed full of seminars and booths with the leading manufactures showing their latest lines of new gadgets. Make time to check the fly tiers there, you just might see a TFF member or two tying some flies. Go to www.flyfishingshow.com for more info.

Remember, the more you put into a club the more you get out, so come on out and join in on some good old Tracy Fly Fisher fun!

Almost forgot, the crab feed was a great success in many ways. Thanks for all your help and support.

-Ben

Bill Carnazzo (Guest Speaker) Bill, who makes his home in Foresthill, California, has been fly fishing for

nearly 50 years, and guides on the Upper Sacramento,

Middle Fork American

drainage (including the Middle Fork, Rubicon, the North Fork of the Middle Fork, Long Canyon Creek, Duncan Creek and all other streams and

tributaries of this drainage), and North Yuba rivers. His guiding career began

approximately 20 years ago when he bought his first home in Dunsmuir. Bill is the columnist for the “At the Vise” column in the California Fly Fisher Magazine, and a master fly tyer who ties at many fly fishing shows; he also is responsible for the Fly-Tying How-To Center at the ISE show at Cal Expo each January. He was awarded the coveted “Ned Long Fly Tyer of the Year”

award by the Northern California Council of the Federation of Fly Fishers. He has designed many original fly patterns that are known as

“fish catchers,” including Bill’s Stick Caddis and other

October Caddis imitations, as well as some unique stonefly

and mayfly bugs. Bill also works part time at Kiene’s Fly Shop in Sacramento, and teaches fly fishing courses at Sierra Community College. In addition to his regular column, he has authored a number of articles for The Sierra

Fisherman, and for California Fly Fisher magazine on a variety of topics, the latest of which are on the Middle Fork American drainage, the North Fork American

drainage, short line nymphing gear and technique, and his series of five October Caddis patterns. He was a founding member of Granite Bay Fly casters and has been club president twice. When not guiding, Bill teaches fly tying, as well as on-stream clinics on nymphing and pocket water fishing.

Program Description Bill will present a program on the “short line nymphing”

technique, including a

description of the technique, rigging, and short line fishing strategy. He will also talk about the Upper Middle Fork

of the American River, where he regularly guides clients. He will talk about 7 of his

favorite streams in this drainage and present a Powerpoint show covering where to access these streams, how to fish them, and seasonal changes in the

watershed. This is remote

high-altitude canyon fishing,

where all of the fish are wild

and the angler can and should

expect the unexpected, and

each trip is an adventure into

areas of majestic beauty.

‘Introduction to ENTOMOLOGY’

BUGS! BUGS! BUGS!

Ever wonder what lurks underneath the surface at your favorite fishing hole? Ever turn over a rock to see what is underneath? Wonder why some fish prefer one fly pattern over another? Believe it or not, what lives in the water will determine what fly in your fly box to use.

TFF is having an ‘Introduction to Entomology’ class on Saturday, March 10. Signups will be at the February meeting. The class is FREE!

More information will be at the meeting, for questions contact Rick Clemens at:

[email protected] See You on the Water!

Missing Float Tube Water Bladder:

One of the auction items at the Crab feed, one of the float tubes, included a “water bladder”. When the float tube was picked up by the winner it was noticed that the bladder was missing. Anyone with information about this missing bladder should notify Bob Kiffin or Gary Phillips.

Conservation News

Please visit the following site to get an idea of the growing problem “didymo”, or rock snot is causing in California as well as the rest of the world. This is a major problem in New Zealand and is quickly becoming an issue in the US.

You can see rock snot yourself in the outflow of Spicer Reservoir.

Be very careful about using felt bottomed wading boots!
