Period 6

Before class starts, Enrique walks in first and says hi. Asks, how I am. I don’t answer so he asks if I can’t talk.

Michael starts reading sheet on his desk, but gets interrupted and turns to talk to Kobe.

Talia says hi, I don’t answer. Aaron says hi.

Bell rings.

Tommy, Marissa come in late.

Tommy: Kids in the school are really annoying spoil Lord of the Flies for me. Asks if I can believe that.

Speechless? Talks across room to Michael about fantasy football.

Angie calls my name.

Kids just talking to each other though bell rang. Josh screams to shut up across the room.

Will: Oh, someone didn’t do their homework. Spark notes.

Max: Oh that would have been so much easier.

Aaron has sheet and tells Danny that this is part of the “act”. Yet doesn’t start the class with it.

Josh yelling across room to Caroline.

Aaron: Alright, who is going to be the leader? She is just here to observe.

Tommy: Oh, really. I was wondering. Tommy says I’m going to lead and comes up to the front.

Tommy: As you know, you have a yellow sheet in front to explain what is going on.

Caroline: I do not.

Tommy: If you do not, crowd around one. We need to do three things: determine how class is going to run, determine methods for survival, and talk about chapter 1.

Aaron: Let’s not make this difficult, Tommy’s the leader.

No, Seth is the leader

Caroline: I think we should vote.

Take nominations.

Angie asks if this is island, can we get comfy get comfy sit on desk

Tommy: Feel free to

(2)

Max: I nominate Mrs. Perlman

Tommy: We need to nominate a leader.

Angie: Can I be co-leader?

Tommy: I guess.

Take nominations for leader. Will is nominated, Tommy: I was nominated 3 times,

I nominate Seth.

Kobe: I am voting twice. Everyone has 2 vote.

People start chanting Will, Will, Will Tommy wins sort of vote

Angie: Looks like we have a leader Josh: (laying on desk) Let’s get this going.

Seth: We should have a war council and declare war on each other.

Caroline: This is like Hunger Games Josh: What are we doing for food?

Tommy? We will determine that.

Max: In AP psych I learned democratic group is best way to go So group votes if democratic or not

Josh: I say we have a republic. Screams across room for Alexis to pay attention.

Tommy: We are going with democracy right now.

Tommy: What does it mean to be a good contributor Will: I will sacrifice someone

Max: Is human sacrifice out?

Josh: Don’t call someone out?

Tommy: Raise hand to speak. We should make rules.

Will: I raise my hand and he calls on me it is not a democracy. Then you (Tommy) have to raise your hand Aaron: What are we doing?

Tommy: How should we communicate? Raise hand? Talking stick

Michael: Talking stick a hassle

(3)

Angie is writing rules on board.

Will: No harm

Michael: Encourage ideas

Josh: Share food if you have it because this is an island Alex: I don’t know what you are talking about

Tommy: Everyone will need jobs. Food people, shelter?

Josh: I’ll be shelter

Caroline: How about we rotate

Tommy: Everyone goes out to get food each day. You’re not leaving the classroom.

Max: Or are we?

Angie: We are on an island.

We actually can’t leave the room.

12:14 and they have not read the whole sheet and have not talked about the book.

Tommy: Number three is important for anyone who wants a good grade in the class. Sink or swim. Get lowest grade.

Josh: WHAT!!!

Will: Eww

Aaron: I don’t want Will’s grade Tommy: Grades is how we survive

Seth: So the less people that die the better?

Tommy: Quiz on Chapter 1

Caroline: So we have to go over Chapter 1 Danny: Wait we have a quiz tomorrow?

Caroline: Gives a summary of chapter.

Danny comes up to read Michaels’ sheet.

Aaron on Chrome book.

Angie comes up to me about the book because read the book in 8

th

grade.

Danny up taking notes now. Tommy tells him to sit down.

Josh: Yeah, you’re nothing sit down.

(4)

Tommy: Be nice, we don’t want any tensions on island

Alex: An atom bomb went off and killed people, so that is important.

Kobe: Wait that actually happened? Wait, did an atom bomb actually go off?

Tommy: Let’s talk about the conch

Lindsey and Talia talk to each other about meaning of conch.

Tommy: Does everyone agree that Piggy’s glasses symbolize intelligence?

Seth: I think vulnerability also

Josh: I think someone with better handwriting should write.

Tommy: Let’s not be critical here, be nice. Calls on Tali

Tali:” I think it is ironic that one of characters name is Piggy and they didn’t kill pig at end of chapter Tommy: Jack not killing pig at end of chapter but says it will, foreshadow something?

Angie: I think it foreshadows loss of innocence because he doesn’t kill it now, but will Jack standing.

12:20 number of people with books open: 2 Seth reading another book.

Tommy goes over to Danny and Aaron and ask if they want to help.

Tommy: Let’s focus here.

Max writing notes on back board.

Caroline talks about role of animals.

Danny: What are the differences between Ralph and Piggy?

Angie: What about Ralph and Jack?

Danny: No, Ralph and Piggy.

Tali: It is like SpongeBob and Patrick.

Josh: Let her explain herself

Tali: talks about how Piggy is smarter

Tommy: Everyone agree there is tension on the island?

Josh: Seth, what are you doing?

Tommy: Let’s not call anyone out; it’s a rule

Josh: But you said be proactive, you said it yourself

(5)

Will and Josh: You are calling us out now Tommy: Just don’t be that guy.

Someone: We should have a quiet corner

Tommy: They are looking for a leader, and looking to Ralph

Angie: (is now sitting down) reads a quote that it was roughly boat shaped? So does that mean they are on a journey?

Josh: No, it means the island is shaped like a boat

Tommy: They are on a journey, Ralph, Simon, Jack, they are losing their…

Angie: What if this is about them losing their innocence Tommy: Kind of like journey of adulthood

Josh: It is important to know their ages 12-6 Caroline: Wait, there is a 6 year old?

Seth still reading another book 12:26.

Tommy: 12:26, we are going to craft a Ladder of Abstraction model, so if you guys can find quotes, feel free to start.

Caroline: What should the quotes be about?

Tommy: What you think is important Max: Is quote at the bottom?

They debate if bottom or 2

nd

Tommy: Can anyone give me solid plot that describes chapter 1 Cameron: We need to find the plot for a quote first.

At 12:27 4 people with books open.

Tommy: Josh can you get out your book? Can everyone get books out?

Even after said that 6 with books open

Michael: p. 11 on the bottom. “I could swim when I was 5. Daddy taught me.

Tali comes up.

Josh: Listen to Tali guys.

Tali: I’m not saying anything.

Will now laying on table.

(6)

Josh: No feet on the table; that is rude.

Tommy: Let’s remain focused. I bet everyone in the class wants to get a good grade. I doubt anyone wants a B or a C. Let’s focus and work on this. This will be important for our success on the island.

Caroline: For number 3, Author’s craft, the conch represents hope, when blew it found other people Angie: Hope and authority.

Tommy: Everyone agree the pig at the end of the chapter foreshadows something between Piggy and Jack?

Michael: Jack doesn’t have to make it up by killing a pig.

Aaron: Anyone have anything about diction

Will: I feel like the more we talk about, the more she will put on the test.

Tommy: Let’s focus on one thing at a time.

Tali: “A chief, a chief, I ought to be chief”

Tommy: What is significant about that?

Marissa: The island is shaped like a boat. Is that an irony because you use a boat to get off the island?

Will: You use an island to get to a boat.

Tommy: To Will, Josh, Kobe, can you guys focus please?

Josh: The fact that you are just standing there just sharing one book?

Tali: We haven’t even gotten Piggy’s name. It is a nickname?

Tommy: Does that represent insecurity

Tommy raises voice, hey, one of a time, one at a time

Jillian: I think Piggy is the Lord and the rest are flies, followers Josh: Piggy is the Lord of the Flies

Max: So it is foreshadowing.

Tommy: We all agree that when Jack vows to kill pig later that it foreshadows trouble between Jack and Piggy

Angie says she disagrees 3 times, no one listens Josh: When you look at cover Piggy looks scared Someone says blood

Aaron: What is the purpose?

Tommy: What is author’s purpose?

(7)

Tommy to Ian: What do you think, you haven’t participated yet today.

Josh: I thought you are not supposed to call anyone out?

Tommy: I just want different people’s input.

Tali: Is chapter 2 homework

Max: Read the yellow paper. Does it say anything about homework?

Tommy: Jack, you haven’t said anything today. What do you think the author’s purpose is?

Jack: Show different levels of leadership.

Tali: I agree.

Josh: Starts to pack up, sees me look at him says to rest – I don’t know why people are packing up Tommy: I don’t think we have to read Chapter 2, but need to study for quiz

Josh: I don’t think you need to know the most, just don’t know the least Aaron: I haven’t heard Alex say anything

Tommy and Michael: He did say something Seth: Did it describe what kind of pig it is.

Josh: What kind of pigs are there?

Tali: What is going to be on the quiz?

Tommy: I have no idea. Anything in chapter fair game Angie: All men for self?

Tommy: No, we are a group. Everyone is taking separately, the person with the lowest grade we receive that grade

Josh: Will we know who has the lowest grade.

Tommy: Study is beneficial for everyone.

Aaron: Take a picture of the board.

Tommy: Good session. As he walks out, please study.

Aaron: Was she actually typing something?

Will: Yeah, she was typing the test.
