Pagina 2 van 9 1. Front of the title page – the basics

- The front of the title page is always written in Dutch;

- The text is center-aligned;

- Eventually all templates become outdated: Therefore, always check the ...name of the current Rector Magnificus on the TU Delft website;

- Your last name should always be written in capitals;

- add your academic title + related university and country.

example:

Sustainable concrete infrastructure design

Proefschrift

ter verkrijging van de graad van doctor aan de Technische Universiteit Delft,

op gezag van de Rector Magnificus prof.ir. K.C.A.M. Luyben;

voorzitter van het College voor Promoties, in het openbaar te verdedigen op donderdag 1 januari 2015 om 12:30 uur

2.The reverse side – the basics

- the text is aligned to the left of the page;

- the reverse side may be written in Dutch or English. This guide will contain examples in the English language;

- there is at least one promotor;

- the chairman is never named; it is always the ‘Rector Magnificus’;

- independent members are part of every committee;

- add the full name of the university/organisation of each member.

Example 1.

This dissertation has been approved by the promotor: Prof.dr. W.P. Geluk

Composition of the doctoral committee:

2.2 The reverse side -

Adding the committee members:

There is a Hierarchy:

- professors are always placed above doctors;

- except for the reserve member, who is the last of the independent members;

- the ‘other members’ are added below the independent members;

- ‘other members’ are the opposite of independent members: they have contributed

…to or been involved in the PhD process.

Example 1

Prof. P. Leclerc Institut des sciences et technologies de Paris, France Prof. Y. Ishihara Tokyo University, Japan

2.3 Other elements of the reverse side:

1. The doctoral candidate may mention any significant contributions to the preparation of the dissertation by an ‘other’ member of the committee:

Example: ‘Prof.dr. W.P. Veldhoven of Technische Universiteit Twente has contributed greatly to the preparation of this dissertation.

2. If the doctoral candidate has received substantial assistance or support in preparing his doctoral dissertation from another member of TU Delft academic staff than the (co)promotor, or by a member of academic staff from an external institute for scientific research (who is not a committee member), the name of that staff member can also be mentioned on the title page, provided the promotor consents to this.

N.B. The promotor or copromotor may be thanked in the acknowledgements section of the dissertation.

3. Organisations or persons who have sponsored or made a financial contribution to the realization of the dissertation and/or the related research must be mentioned on the reverse side of the title page in accordance with D.1.6. of the Implementation Decree. This may be done either by written word or by adding the logos of the organisations involved.

example:

This research was funded by the European Commission through the Erasmus Mundus Joint Doctorate Program, and also partially supported by the KTH Royal Institute of Technology.

4. It is customary to add information regarding the ISBN numer, copyright, ‘Printed by’ and cover design at the bottom of the reverse side.

3. Rules and procedure

You can find more information in section D of the Implementation Decree on Doctoral Regulations 2014.

This Guide sometimes differs from what is mentioned in the Implementation Decree that came into effect on 1-1-2015. This guide was written in consultation with the Board for Doctorates in June 2015. When in doubt, please follow this guide. If still in doubt, send a message to [email protected].

Approval:

When submitting the draft dissertation and Form B, the title page should be included. At this point some things (such as the defence date and the composition of your doctoral committee) will not be certain yet. Therefore, please leave the date empty and omit the independent and other members from the reverse side of your draft title page.

Do not forget to submit the definitive title page -front and reverse- to the University Graduate School Office for review and approval on behalf of the Board for

Doctorates before the dissertation is printed.
