WHS LECTURE HALL – January 16, 2014

MISSION STATEMENT

The Monroe Township Public School District, an educational team, is dedicated to the development of the potential and uniqueness of the individual student to become effective participants in an evolving global society while providing a safe educational environment for students to attain the skills and knowledge specified in the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards.

A regular meeting of the Monroe Township Board of Education was called to order at 6:30 P.M., by the President, George Caruso. Adequate notice pursuant to the provisions of P.L. 1975, Chapter 231, Open Public Meetings Act, has been given of this meeting by publishing notice thereof in the Gloucester County Times, giving notice to the Courier Post, by posting notice in the Monroe Township Municipal Building and all district school buildings and by filing notice with the Township Clerk, all having been done after the last reorganization meeting of the Board.

The Board met in Executive Session, from which the general public was excluded, to discuss personnel, financial matters, student matters, litigation, negotiations, and contracts. The results of this session will be made public immediately after or as soon thereafter as a decision is reached.

Closed A motion by Mr. Simpler, seconded by Mr. Amandeo, to approve Session the following resolution for closed session, was carried unanimously:

“Whereas, Public Law 1975, Chapter 231, Open Public Meetings Law, provides for a public body to meet in closed session,

“Whereas, the Monroe Township Board of Education desires to discuss certain matters described in Sub-section 7B of the aforementioned law to wit, those matters pertaining to personnel and legal matters (S.P. vs.

MTBOE), and HIB;

“Whereas, the Monroe Township Board of Education will disclose the discussion topic of the closed session at a public meeting once the justification for the closed session no longer exists;

“Now, therefore be it resolved that the Monroe Township Board of Education shall now enter a closed session for an approximate time

limit of 60 minutes.”

The Board entered a closed session at 6:30 P.M.

Out of Closed A motion by Mr. Adams, seconded by Mr. Simpler, to come out of Session closed session at 7:30 p.m., was carried unanimously.

Members of the public are invited to address the Board of Education during the public participation portion of the meeting. Please fill out a “Public Participation Information Card”

which is available at the entrance of the room. Please print legibly your name, address, telephone number and your topic of comment or concern. The flag salute was led by Brittany Reedman.

Presentations Mr. Caruso and Dr. VanHouten-Sauter presented resolution to the Williamstown Marching Braves. Mr. Fantazzi assisted. The Board congratulated the students for their accomplishments.

Mr. Earling presented resolutions to the Monroe Township Board of Education for their service to the school district.

Resolution A motion by Mr. Simpler, seconded by Dr. VanHouten-Sauter, to grant approval to adopt the resolutions presented above. The motion was carried unanimously.

Approval of A motion by Mr. Simpler, seconded by Dr. VanHouten-Sauter, to grant Minutes approval of the December 19, 2013 regular and closed session meeting

minutes, was carried unanimously.

A motion by Mr. Simpler, seconded by Dr. VanHouten-Sauter, to grant approval of the January 2, 2014 Annual Reorganization Meeting minutes, was carried unanimously.

Communications There were no communications.

Public A motion by Mr. Simpler, seconded by Mrs. Davi, to grant approval to Participation open the public portion of the meeting, was carried unanimously.

Jeremy Fau reported that there are still issues with copy machines and copy paper. It has been recommended that a heavier paper be used. Mr.

Fau asked the money aspect of purchasing heavier paper. MTEA members also have concerns about copying benchmarks.

Connie Reedman stated that she felt that it is a great experience for students serving as student board members. She suggested that student board members be given some backup information that is not confidential but is of interest to the students. The Powerschool bulletin board has not been working for parents for quite some time.

Paul VanHouten discussed Powerschool issues for the elementary school level. Mr. VanHouten also discussed students staying after-school for activities. He stated that sometimes parents aren’t aware that their child is staying. He suggested the possibility of using student ID cards as swipe cards to keep track of a student’s whereabouts.

A motion by Mr. Simpler, seconded by Mrs. Davi, to grant approval to close the public portion of the meeting, was carried unanimously.

Award L35B A motion b Mr. Simpler, seconded by Mr. Amandeo, to grant sustained action be approved to award bus route L35B to Delaware City Bus Company for $146.65 per diem route cost for a total cost per diem of

$146.65. Total cost for 2013-2014 will be $17,011.40 for a total of 116 days. The motion was carried by a unanimous roll call vote.

Quote L34B A motion by Mr. Simpler, seconded by Mr. Amandeo, to grant sustained action be approved to quote bus route L34B for two displaced students to attend GCIT located at 1360 Tanyard Road, Sewell, NJ 08080. This route will follow the 2013/2014 GCIT School District Calendar. The motion was carried by a unanimous roll call vote.

Award L34B A motion by Mr. Simpler, seconded by Mr. Amandeo, to grant sustained action be approved to award bus route L34B to Delaware City Bus Company for $122.85 per diem route cost for a total cost per diem of

$122.85. The total cost for the 2013-2014 will be $13,882.05 for a total of 113 days. The motion was carried by a unanimous roll call vote.

Quote WHS-DECA A motion by Mr. Simpler, seconded by Mr. Amandeo, to grant sustained action be approved to quote bus route WHS-DECA to provide

transportation to The Crown Plaza, located at 2349 W. Marlton Pike, Cherry Hill, NJ, for Williamstown High School DECA club students to attend the annual DECA conference. This route will run for one day, Wednesday, January 8, 2014. The motion was carried by a unanimous roll call vote.

Award WHS-DECA A motion by Mr. Simpler, seconded by Mr. Amandeo, to grant sustained action be approved to award bus route WHS-DECA to Holcomb Bus Company at a cost of $400.00 per diem route cost. Administrative Services

QSAC DIP A motion by Mr. Simpler, seconded by Mrs. Davi, to grant approval to submit the 2013-2014 QSAC District Improvement Plan (DIP) for Monroe Township Public Schools to the Department of Education, was carried by a unanimous roll call vote.

Reports of Brittany Reedman reported that announcements are done over the loud Board Members speaker and it is going very well. She reported that quota was met for the

blood drive. Pin sale will be starting next month. Rehearsals are

beginning for musical “Walk in the Woods”. Seniors have concerns with writing 100 word essays for every day missed while on senior trip.

Tyler Reedman reported that DECA Competitions were held last week.

Many students received awards. Renaissance cards were given out. They can be used for privileges such as being able to get lunch first when your table is called last and able to use the media center during study hall or lunch without a teacher pass. Dr. VanHouten-Sauter asked the number of students participating. Tyler stated that he will find out.

Brandon Palazzo reported that auditions for the student/faculty variety show are beginning next week. He also reported that he is hoping to have something by the next board meeting in regards to his Eagle Scout Project approval. Student Council visited the College of New Jersey in Trenton for the 88th Annual NJ Assoc. of Student Councils. Brandon ran for Treasurer of the State Board of Student Councils and won. Williamstown High School has never had anyone on the Board. The Board

congratulated him.

Vincent Regalbuto announced this year’s Prom theme will be “The Great

Mrs. Davi questioned why the Youth Group Club that was Board

approved has not begun yet. Mr. Ross stated that there was content in the brochure and flyer that needed changing and he is waiting for an update.

Mrs. Davi asked for a summary what happened to the high school ceiling.

Mr. Sullivan explained that a coil froze and water erupted into the ceiling collapsing the ceiling in a twenty foot section of the K-Wing that has been restored.
