Welcome to the

Basic Email Part 1 Guide

To use this Guide, you must have a working Internet Service Provider. Ask your friends or family members for their email

address. You will use it to send them an email.

(2)

This Guide will help you to:

1. Think about what email can do for you.

2. Set up an email account in Yahoo! mail.

3. Read an email message.

4. Set up your address book.

NOTE: We are using Yahoo! Mail as an example. This is not an endorsement.

(3)

How Do You Talk To Someone Who Is A Different Town Or State?

You could call them on the phone

(if you have long distance telephone service and are able to pay the bill)

You could write them a letter

(if you have paper, pen, envelop and a stamp)

You could send them a FAX

(if you have a FAX machine and they have a FAX number)

Or…

You could send them an email message from your computer using

your phone or cable line

(if you have an Internet Service Provider and an email address)

(4)

Think About What Email Can Do For You

With email, you can send a letter over the phone line. Once you have an Internet Service Provider, you can set up your free email with and email service like

Yahoo! mail. Some Internet Service Providers have their own email service, such as: America Online. NOTE: Be careful – there are some free email services that have unwanted content. Circle four things that you want to learn about email.

Keep in contact with your friends and family (no long distance phone charge) when you have an Internet Service Provider

Keep and save email messages

Delete or throw away email messages

Send the same message to more than one person at the same time

View all the messages that were sent to you (in box)

Get electronic copies of stuff (documents, pictures, music) as attachments to email

View messages that you already sent out

Use a toolbar in Yahoo to make your email message more readable (bold, bullets, insert) before you send it

Type something and save it as a draft

Keep out unwanted messages
