Explore student research pods or students undertaking research in the organisation while on WIL/ field education/ placement supported by
academics and identify challenges, insights, collaborations, engagements and the impact of this research.
Definitions
ResearchFor the purposes of this review the ARC’s own definitions were adopted. First, research itself is defined as ‘the creation of new knowledge and/or the use of existing knowledge in a new and creative way so as to generate new concepts, methodologies, inventions and understandings.’ Included in this broad definition is synthesis and analysis of previous research as well as participatory action learning processes so long as the resulting knowledge is new and creative.
Excluded from this definition is using research strategies to enhance students’ learning through reflection, implementation and evaluation of their own practice, i.e. a student applying a reflective action evaluation modus to review and enhance their own practice or use of theory or intervention. It should not be included if it is just research to enhance the student’s practice rather than research that is valuable for an organisations. If , on the other hand, the starting point it the organisation wants to improve students’ placements in their setting and thus uses, for example, action research to explore students’ learning in their organisation, than this is not just about a student’s learning about their own practice , research is then aimed evaluation practice with students, this could be included then
Research in an organsation
Only student research placements that are located in an organisation will be included. For example, this excludes students being on a research placmeent with an academic to assist the academic in their work. It would also exclude research that is undertaken for an organsiation, but the student is not place in the organisation.
Other commoly terms used are : Field education, placement, practicum, work experience, and potentially service learning [not sure whether service learning could be used to cover WIL, so further definition below], however, it needs to decribe a compulsory subject in the degree.
Essentially, this systematic literature review is interested in exploring field education research pods, i.e. students or groups of students undertaking a research placement within an organisation (Appleton et al., 2016). A student could undertake a distinct piece of research or a number of students could be involved sequentially in the same research project over various placement periods.
Students could also undertake research as part of service learning, generally research that is undertaken as part of a research subject with a practical research component supporting the research needs of an organisation (B. D. Smith, Marshall, Anderson, & Daniels, 2017; L. A. Smith, McCaslin, Chang, Martinez, & McGrew, 2010). This systematic literature review is not interested in research subjects that have service learning components attached to them, rather in placements subjects in which students undertake research.
