1. General Description
Use the Lantronix UDS-10 External Network Interface to connect an MPM or BDS series
monitor to your local network. The UDS-10 is factory set to work with the MPM or BDS and was
assigned the following IP, Netmask, and Gateway addresses for test purposes.
IP: 192.168.1.3 Netmask: 255.255.255.0 Gateway: 0.0.0.0
These settings need to be changed before connecting to your network. Ask your network
administrator what the new communication settings should be.
IP: _ _ _ . _ _ _ . _ _ _ . _ _ _ Netmask: _ _ _ . _ _ _ . _ _ _ . _ _ _ Gateway: _ _ _ . _ _ _ . _ _ _ . _ _ _
2. Initial Connection
Connect the 12V line from the wall mount transformer to the UDS-10 power connector. Connect
the DB-9 /DB-25 cable between a DB-9 COM port on the computer and the DB-25 connector on
the UDS-10.
3. Setting Communications
To set the UDS-10, a HyperTerminal session is required. This program is distributed with all
Microsoft operating systems. To start HyperTerminal, click Start|Programs|Accessories|
Communications|HyperTerminal. In the Name field on the Connection Description dialog box,
type Network Setup, select an icon of your choice, then click OK
2
On the Connect To dialog box, select the COM port to which the UDS-10 is connected.
Figure 2. Connect To (on HyperTerminal)
On the Properties dialog box, select 9600 from the Bits per Second drop-down menu, select 8 for
Data Bits, None for Parity, 1 for Stop bits, and None for Flow Control. Click OK. The
Network Setup screen appears, but without information.
3
Unplug the power cable from the UDS-10 interface. While holding down the x key on the
keyboard, reconnect power to the interface. When the Network Setup screen displays the
following message, release the x key. Press the Enter key within a second or two of releasing the
x key to go into Setup Mode.
Figure 4. Network Setup
NOTE: If Enter is not pressed soon enough, the UDS-10 defaults to its normal power-on state.
You will have to press x and cycle the power again.
4
On the Network Setup - Setup Mode screen, select 1 to set the IP address, Default Gateway and
Netmask. These are the settings you got from your network administrator.
Select S to save the new settings, then select the Q to quit.
WARNING - Do not, under any circumstances, change the other settings. Not all settings can be
properly changed using HyperTerminal. If you change other settings, the UDS-10 may fail to
communicate with the MPM or BDS.
4. Final Connection
After quitting the HyperTerminal program, do the following.
Disconnect the DB-9 cable from the computer COM port and connect it to the DB-9/DB-9 null
modem adapter (supplied).
5
5. BMDM Setup
Start the Battery Monitor Data Manager (BMDM) program by double clicking the BMDM icon
on the desktop. At the Status screen (opening screen), double click the string you want to change
to network connection. At the password screen, type the password. (The default is alber.) This
places the string into System Setup. Click the Link tab to display the System Setup - Link dialog
box.
