Utilities
Winds of Change
Fujitsu has been active in the energy and utilities sector
for more than 30 years, providing application services,
ICT infrastructure and business consultancy services
throughout the value chain from generation to retail.
The pace of change in the energy and utilities industries is increasing rapidly. Pressure is coming from all sides:
■ Regulatory compliance that requires your attention and demand to change
■ Environmental concerns about emissions caused by energy generation
■ Controlling costs and risk as market forces continue to impact your ability to generate profits ■ Addressing evolving opportunities such as the
rise of multi-channel communication as a way to improve your business.
Research shows that only 32% of executives in private sector firms rate their businesses as ‘Fit to Change’.* Is your organisation responsive enough to prosper in a changing market? As business conditions change, so must the technologies that support them. Smart grid and smart meter investments are the cornerstones of the technology solutions for many of the pressures your business faces. But this won't be enough. For example, new billing engines and customer relationship management (CRM) systems are needed, while business intelligence and analytics will help save costs and drive business growth across the entire value chain.
Smart initiatives
are a clever
infrastructure
investment that
will accelerate
your business
and enable you
to innovate.

Did you know?
In Saudi Arabia, Fujitsu is working to transform industrial estates managed by the Saudi Industrial Property Authority (MODON) into smart cities. The work includes building an environmental improvement system and a cloud system covering industrial estates nationwide as part of steps to bring about environment-friendly eco-cities.
We're entering an era of smart metering, smart cities and smart technology... but what does that really mean? At Fujitsu we believe there are three clear and immediate benefits from smart technologies - with many more to come. 1. Get closer to your customer
Whether it’s the move to multi-channel or the increased data produced by smart meters, smart solutions provide new touchpoints and potentially new insights. To realise the full benefits, you need user-friendly systems at the customer end and effective data analytics capabilities back at base to cut through the noise.
2. Be more agile
The new data streams created by smart meters can be used to predict consumer behaviour, design new products and services, and deepen the customer relationship. For example, power companies will have a much more accurate and up-to-date feel for their user population – and the ability to respond faster to changing demand. 3. Save time and money
Smart solutions have up-front costs, but they generate high pay-back over a long lifetime. The smarter you build today, the better equipped you will be to adapt tomorrow. You'll be saving time and money by responding faster and avoiding hefty new-build projects in the future.

Fujitsu - delivering around the world
Airtricity, Ireland
Fujitsu helped Ireland’s largest independent energy utility re-align mission-critical business processes and legacy systems ready for the deregulated market. Our know-how and execution enabled them to compete effectively in the new marketplace and helped their business worldwide with the introduction of a knowledgeable billing partner. We also gave them access to fully flexible and integrated Customer Information Solutions, enabling them to understand their customers better. Smart Metering Case Study, USA
Fujitsu supplied devices with proprietary wireless technology to a utility company in New Mexico, enabling them to build a network of smart meters for approximately 30% less than other smart meters on the market. Fujitsu is also developing a cloud-based system to maintain electricity consumption data for each household, which significantly reduces the cost of building smart grids.
Centrica, United Kingdom
Fujitsu was tasked by Centrica with reducing the cost of a suite of corporate applications by 50%. We provided an Applications Value Assessment service that identified the relative value and viability of these applications. The client can now judge which applications should be retained, redesigned or replaced.
Northern Ireland Water, United Kingdom
Alerion, Italy
Fujitsu introduced virtualisation and cloud-based infrastructure to Italy's leading independent green energy company, making Alerion’s ICT operations more dynamic and flexible, and positioning them for future growth.
Metawater, Japan
Fujitsu’s On-Demand cloud service is being employed by Metawater, which supports the water and sewer operations of local governments in Japan. Metawater can now provide regional monitoring, asset management and remote support services so that local governments and their partners can share information and communication infrastructure, delivering superior flexibility at a low cost. This business cloud is forecast to cut lifecycle costs, including system deployment and running expenses, by 30% compared to in-house systems.
Publiacqua, Italy
Fujitsu’s knowledge and experience with SAP® HANA™ was the perfect way for Publiacqua to create an environment that would ensure the best possible infrastructure stability together with the fastest and most flexible processing functions.
An ever-increasing number of users can now make use of the business’s data assets, while all levels of management have easy, fast and flexible access to all necessary reporting functions. Furthermore, the fall in the total cost of ownership (TCO) of business intelligence infrastructure means that existing investment containment goals have been met.
Sydney Water, Australia
Fujitsu played a major part in a large-scale program to consolidate Sydney Water’s asset management systems. Fujitsu’s Consulting Business Transformation team pre pared over 1,000 internal and external end users for the change. The Business Transformation approach en sured strong engagement and ownership while minimising business disruption. This is a prime example of Fujitsu’s ability to work closely with clients to ensure that change is seamless and well-executed.
