dkt ftth gateway evolution
DKT entered the FTTH industry already in 1999 due to the obvious technological benefits of fiber. In 2001 DKT completed development of its very own FTTH gateway, a gateway with Ethernet outputs. In 2003 DKT completed development of its own CATV Rx module for FTTH gateways. This allowed DKT to build FTTH networks with RF overlay, thereby providing further options for network designers.
The next major step was taken in 2005 when DKT launched the next generation of FTTH gateways. DKT’s primary focus with this new design was to build a product that was not only capable of providing high bandwidth, but which was in a discrete enclosure suited to the subscriber’s home. During the following years additional features and options were added. First was the 1 gigabit platform, followed by a new open-source firmware and finally VoIP functionality.
In 2011, the third generation of FTTH gateways were launched, bringing even more flexibility into the extensive range of gateways. With the 796xx and 797xx series, DKT decided to follow two different design paths, both of which are described herein.
The DKT FTTH network is based on a point-to-point (P2P) architecture. Each user is connected by a dedicated fiber, thereby allowing users to be upgraded and connected individually, and thus allowing ultimate network flexibility.

product introduction - general
Introduction
There are two models of FTTH gateways. The 796xx series is a full-size gateway, ranging from management to Multiport Ethernet and VoIP. The 797xx series is a very compact gateway, offering the most basic features for optical to electrical conversion.
Both product series follow the philosophy of utilizing a “two-box” rather than an “all-in-a-box” solution. It is DKT’s belief to separate the OSI layers 1, 2 and 3. This results in a cost-efficient base installation, allows for home network scalability and also permits several independent service providers. This ensures that the base installation does not require upgrading to comply with wireless technology changes and other technologies.
This brochure provides an overview of the benefits associated with the different types of FTTH gateways in the DKT portfolio. Each section provides an overview of the different models.

technical features
The 796xx and 797xx platforms share the same DNA. This section describes the main issues.
DKT claims that layer 2 is the best choice for the gateway
In the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) multi-layered communication model, Layer 2 refers to the Data Link layer and Layer 3 refers to the Network layer. Layer 2 is the demarcation point and the best choice for the gateway.
Layer 2 - Network topology
The data-link layer. This is used by units that operate upon a MAC address learning concept and is a multiport transparent bridge. Such a unit can make traffic-related QoS decisions. It can also handle multiple traffic services that are separated by VLANs.
Many operators separate their own services from partner services in different VLANs. It is therefore critical that a gateway can distinguish and prioritize according to the network topology.
The end customer network and the operator network are virtually transparent to one another. This is why it is important to protect the operator network from spoofing,
congestion and flooding, and doing this using techniques such as Broadcast Protection, IGMP snooping, DHCP option-82 and ingress/egress rate limitation.
Layer 3 - Network topology
The network layer. This handles the routing of the data, sending it in the correct direction to the correct destination on outgoing transmissions and receiving incoming transmissions at the packet level. The network layer performs data routing and forwarding.
In summary, a router is a Layer 3 device, and some newer switches also perform Layer 3 functions. The Internet Protocol (IP) address is a Layer 3 address. It contains the same functionality as a Layer 2 switch, but can separate a customer network from the operator network and act as a gateway between a private and a public network. This is done by
using a built-in NAT table that makes complicated routing decisions based upon the content of each packet. Typically Layer 3 routers have more advanced features such as firewalls, service packet inspections and Wi-Fi.
Conclusion
DKT has chosen to pursue a pure Layer 2 solution, thereby separating router and gateway functionality. This gives a higher degree of freedom for the operator to optimize choices regarding router components, or even allow the end-user to decide for themselves. DKT’s philosophy is that by separating gateway and router, it is possible to reap the benefits of the long lifetime of the gateway, while also having the option to replace routers as Layer 3 technology, such as WiFi and other protocols, the latter being subject to rapid change when managed at Layer 3. This will imply a lower cost when upgrading a router at customer premises as the gateway itself will remain unchanged.
DKT claims that P2P/Active Ethernet is the best choice for gateways
In a P2P network, each user is connected
via their own dedicated fiber, which means all
fibers require termination and handling at a central Point-of-Presence (PoP). Fiber-only losses allow cheaper optical components to be used in the network since the transmission power and required receiver sensitivity are lower than in PON-based networks. Typical maximum distances are 15 km. Each user has a dedicated port at the switch and the operator can select a flexible growth scenario by using multiple ODFs in cascade. In that sense, the CAPEX and OPEX are attractive at low take rates at the start of a P2P FTTH deployment. The
Ethernet standard offers abundannt functionality to
provide services and manage the data traffic.
Conclusion
DKT have chosen to develop P2P gateways. This is because DKT believes that PON architecture suffers from upgradability and scaleability, especially as the number of subscribers increases per segment. P2P gateways allow for a more future-proof solution as bandwith demands increase with time.

Built upon the strong DKT FTTH gateway product line, this is a new series of fiber termination units/wall outlets that offer operators a neutral FTTH termination demarcation point. The series includes a passive part to be installed during fiber termination as the base installation, as well as an active part that can be easily installed by the end-customer.
The design of the 797xx series is similar in shape and size to those seen in regular coaxial outlets in cable TV networks. Being only 88 x 88 mm in size, it is the smallest media conversion unit ever developed by DKT. This allows for a more seamless integration at the customer’s premises, making it practically invisible.
By choosing the 797xx series, it is possible to separate the gateway location from the router location. This allows optimization of Wi-Fi performance in the home and prolong the lifetime of the solution.

Internal construction
The construction of the 797xx Fiber Termination Unit (FTU) series allows external fibers to be fed to the rear side of the FTU, alternatively via
break-aways from any side, and spliced inside the enclosure. To allow splicing in such a confined space requires that the external fiber is higly flexible, namely of the same fiber type as the pigtails in the FTU.
Superior plast type
The construction employs a special blend of Polycarbonate (PC) and Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) plast, containing non-halogen flame retardant, which is non-toxic and environmentally stable. The flame retardants used in this plast type do not violate any regulations or bans of environmental protection in Europe. Furthermore it’s highly UV-resistant and very durable.

796xx series - product introduction
The 796xx series utilizes the open access network model. This means that services can be provided by any service provider, simply by adding the service box for the desired service. A 796xx gateway handles QoS, switches tagged/untagged VLANs to the RJ45 ports and acts as a hub for service boxes.
This complies with philosophy of using multiple boxes to handle specific services, thereby dramatically extending the lifetime of the gateway and reducing the network maintenance cost. It even permits consumers to use their own devices, such as routers, thereby allowing operators to eliminate CAPEX by not having to replace routers every few years at customer premises.
Selecting the 796xx series allows separating the gateway location from the router location. This allows for optimizing Wi-Fi performance in the home and increases the lifetime of the solution.

796xx series - options
Optional fiber management cassette, customer’s
To ease the termination of fiber at the customers premises, DKT offers an optional fiber management casette for the 796xx series. This makes it is possible to feed fibers into the gateway from beneath the unit, splice pigtails onto the external fibers and manage these with fiber guides. This prevents the end customer from accessing the fibers and thereby reduces their possibility of damaging the fibers delivered at the gateway.
Optional Wi-Fi module
The gateway can be fitted with an optional Wi-Fi module. This supports up to four SSIDs being broadcast simultaneously. Each SSID can be mapped into a specific VLAN, where this module receives an IP address via the network. This will not be a DHCP server, but establish a private LAN. However, it will convert the gateway into a hotspot that operators can use as part of their infrastructure.
