SPIRITUALITY AND ENRICHMENT
“I, (name), take you, (name), to be my wife/husband. I promise to be faithful to you in good mes and in bad, in sickness and in health, to love you and to honor you all the days of my life.”
It is a simple vow declara on. Faith, Love and Honor. This is what you promise on the day you get married. 'What God has joined together let no man put asunder.’ (Ma hew 19:6) This is what scripture has to say about lifelong marriage, and this is what we as Catholics profess.
Why is marriage a sacrament? The sacrament of Matrimony signifies the union of Christ and the Church. It gives spouses the grace to love each other with the love with which Christ loves his Church; the grace of the sacrament thus perfects the human love of the spouses, strengthens their indissoluble unity, and sanc fies them on the way to eternal life. - CCC 1661 It was established for the good of each other and the procrea on of children.
In the Catholic tradi on, husband and wife accept a role in God’s plan for humanity. They are to be ambassadors of God’s love. Knowing that your bond is permanent should be a comfort. All couples want their marriage to last a life me. Having a partner who is commi ed for be er or for worse, in sickness and in health, should make people happier and healthier.
But married life is difficult and today many couples find it hard to keep their promises. Many young people have grown up experiencing the pain of divorce. While wan ng to marry, they find it hard to believe that marriages can last a life me. They are afraid to commit. One of the benefits of a sacramental marriage in the Catholic Church is the power of
God’s grace, which helps spouses keep their commitment and find happiness together. This does not mean Catholic marriages have fewer problems than any other marriage. What helps these couples grow and overcome obstacles is the help they find in God’s grace.
I want to emphasize this: Grace! Every Sacrament comes with grace. You should never underes mate the power of grace. Catholics married in the Church experience lower rates of divorce; about 28% compared to about 40% in the general popula on. That’s s ll too high. We need to do a much be er job at preparing couples for marriage.
Any of you who have go en married in the Church recently know that we do not allow a couple to get married immediately. We expect there to be about a six-month period of prepara on. A good percentage of this me should be for pre-nup al counseling. The purpose of pre-nup al counseling is to help the couple discover how they will navigate marriage. Here at St. Louise, we administer a FOCCUS inventory test. It emphasizes communica on between the couple. First, a couple needs to understand his or her partner. Do you share values? What is your a tude about children, finances? What is your style of conflict resolu on? Are you an extrovert or an introvert? It has been my experience that introverts tend to marry extroverts. You can be very different from your proposed partner, but you will need to learn how to nego ate and compromise. If you can learn to listen and hear one another and then calmly discuss the issue at hand, you have a be er chance of nego a ng a compromise. This is an essen al tool for marriage. Your next tool is prayer. Your marriage was granted grace. Call on the Holy Spirit for help. I promise you; God WILL help.

UPDATED COVID GUIDELINES
The reopening plan for the State of California, the County of Los Angeles and the Archdiocese means that some changes will be made to the health orders that have guided our prac ces during the pandemic. For a full list of these guidelines, please visit our parish website.
Most notable among the changes is that the dispensa on from the obliga on to a end Mass Sunday Mass and Holy Days in response to the coronavirus pandemic is li ed effec ve June 19, 2021.
Due to the ongoing renova ons in church, we will not be able to return to the inside of the church for a few more weeks. This is a great sacrifice our community is making, especially as the weather begins to heat up! We are grateful for your pa ence as we endure these last few weeks of inconvenience. There are some other changes that will be implemented now: • We can now open for prayer group meetings, ministerial
gatherings, and social gatherings provided that sensible public health precautions are observed. Groups and ministries are allowed to meet indoors. Due to the construction, our indoor meeting spaces will be limited. We will try to accommodate meeting requests to the best of our ability. Please contact the Parish Office for any questions or to reserve a room.
• Masks are not required for fully vaccinated individuals outdoors or indoors for religious services or gatherings. • Masks are required for unvaccinated individuals outdoors
when social distancing is not possible, and at all times indoors.
• We will no longer be taking reservation for Confessions. Instead it will be first come, first serve basis. Confessions will take place inside the 5th Grade and 8th Grade classrooms. Please line up on the sidewalk below the classrooms. Confessions will still be on Wednesdays from 4 PM to 5:15 PM and Saturdays from 2:30 PM to 4 PM. • If you are feeling ill, please stay home.
We are grateful for everyone’s cooperation and patience as we begin to implement a return to opening our facilities. Praise be God and may we all continue to be considerate of each other and pray for those who have suffered because of the pandemic.

THIS WEEK’S HIGHLIGHTS
Renovation Realities
As work progresses along in the church it appears very likely that the August 14th/15th date set for reopening our worship space is quite possible, with a remote chance it could be slightly sooner. It is also quite possible that the new font will not be completely ready for use at that me, but that fact should not prevent us from using the church space.
Work began this past week to install the limestone stair treads for the altar pla orm and the LVT (luxury vinyl le) under the pews. We hope both of those tasks are completed next week and then the le flooring on the altar can be installed and the pews begin to return for installa on.
Turning to the roof renova on above the school and Faith Forma on buildings, quite a bit of extensive dry rot and damaged wood was uncovered as the old roofing material was removed. Several areas of sagging stucco will also need to be replaced, in addi on to the fascia stucco that was already planned to be replaced. Replacement work has started but will obviously add to the project meframe.
Your pa ence and support for these projects is greatly appreciated. Maintaining and improving our facili es is one way for us to ensure that future genera ons will be able to enjoy the quality facili es that are here today because of those who came before and made their own sacrifices. THANK YOU!
Next week: Vaca on schedules may not allow for an ar cle next week.

THE FIRST MARTYRS OF ROME
June 30thA er a raging fire destroyed two-thirds of Rome in 64, Emperor Nero blamed
Rome’s Chris ans to divert suspicion from himself. Those acknowledging their Chris anity were arrested and executed. Some were covered in wax and set afire as torches; some were sewn into animal skins and cast into the arena with wild animals; others were
crucified. Sts. Peter and Paul died in the same persecu on. The feast of these earliest martyrs of the Roman church is
celebrated a day a er the joint feast of Peter and Paul. The Roman historian Tacitus said the protomartyrs were to be pi ed “for it was felt that they were being sacrificed to one man’s brutality.”

PreparaƟon of the GiŌs
The altar is prepared, the gi s are received. Several brief rites follow with accompanying prayers, some prayed silently by the priest and deacon and others said aloud. We call this part of the Mass the “prepara on.” What kind of prepara on is happening? First, the presider holds up the paten or bowl containing the hosts, and says words that Jesus must have said many mes, since they derive from ancient Jewish meal prayers: “Blessed are you, Lord God of all crea on!” We have brought forward our gi s, our offering to God, and now we acknowledge that they are not really ours—the gi s that we give are God’s gi to us. It is “through your goodness” that we have gi s to offer. It is significant that we offer not wheat and grapes, but bread and wine; “fruit of the earth and work of human hands.” Bread and wine are both God’s work, and ours. These preparatory rites also prepare us for what we are about to do in the Eucharist, a mystery in which divine and human meet; a holy collabora on in which our ac on is caught up into God’s divine plan.

FEAST OF FAITH
In today’s second reading Paul offers a wonderful argument to his converts at Corinth for seeking to help those in need. He is dealing with a prac cal problem, arranging a collec on for the poor of the church of Jerusalem; but as he o en does, he develops an important teaching about Jesus to make his point. A er asking that they show their faith by generous gi s, he reminds them of the “gracious act of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, for your sake he became poor, so that by his poverty you might become rich” (2 Corinthians 8:9). In the Incarna on our Lord assumed our human nature, certainly becoming poor for one who is God. The ul mate gracious act of this poverty was going to the cross with all its terrible sufferings. By this act of poverty we definitely become rich. Now our sins can be forgiven; we can share in the very life of God through the sacraments; we can a ain eternal salva on!
